21 New Songs Out Today

So many artists, so little time. Each week we review a handful of new albums (of all genres), round up even more new music that we’d call “indie,” and talk about what metal is coming out. We post music news, show recaps, track premieres, and more all day. That includes a lot of tour announcements, a list of tonight’s NYC shows, and NY shows that just went on sale. We publish a monthly playlist of some of our favorite tracks. Here’s a daily roundup with a bunch of interesting, newly released songs in one place…

DANGER MOUSE & SPARKLEHORSE – “NINJAROUS” (ft. MF DOOM)

Danger Mouse has shared a new song that he made with his Dark Night of the Soul collaborator Sparklehorse (aka Mark Linkous), before Mark’s passing in 2010. It features MF DOOM, and it’s an instantly satisfying dose of indie/rap crossover that Danger Mouse said “was always one of Mark’s favorites.”

TWIN PEAKS – “SPIDERS (KIDSMOKE)” (WILCO COVER)

Uncut Magazine put together a tribute to Wilco as part of its November issue, and Twin Peaks have now shared their contribution, a krautrock-y take on A Ghost is Born‘s “Spiders (Kidsmoke).” Also on the tribute: Kurt Vile, Sharon Van Etten, Low, Courtney Barnett, Whitney, Parquet Courts, Mountain Man, Ryley Walker, and more.

PRINCESS NOKIA – “BALENCIAGA”

Princess Nokia has a new album that she’s expecting to release in the first half of 2020, and it’s set to feature her excellent recent single “Sugar Honey Iced Tea,” and the just-released, harder, darker single “Balenciaga.” In case you’re at work, the new video features censored-but-still-probably-NSFW nudity.) JAMES BKS – “NEW BREED” (ft. Q-TIP, IDRIS ELBA, LITTLE SIMZ)

French producer James BKS has put together a very impressive crew for this lively, groovy new song, and he says, “Little Simz, Idris Elba, Q-Tip, and me strongly and proudly represent the New Breed movement, a different way to approach music with no borders, no judgment, no labels. We have learned from our past mistakes and victories and our eyes are on Africa, while in the meantime we embrace our own personal paths, respectively in the UK for Little Simz and Idris Elba, in the U.S. for Q-Tip and in France for me.”

KACEY MUSGRAVES – “ALL IS FOUND” / WEEZER – “LOST IN THE WOODS”

Disney’s Frozen 2 hits theaters next week, and its official soundtrack features renditions of two of the film’s songs by Kacey Musgraves and Weezer. Kacey’s take on “All Is Found” is a tender, icy acoustic ballad, while Weezer’s “Lost In The Woods” is a moody piano rocker, with some of those trademark Weezer-y guitars in the mix too.

LOCAL NATIVES – “NOVA”

Local Natives shared this new track today, which the band says was recorded for this year’s Violet Street, before being cut at the last minute. The band writes on Twitter: “It’s about the haze that surrounds you when you first fall in love, the all consuming fantasy of it. Like a mad scientist, Shawn [Everett] spliced together moments of us jamming live as a full band inside his warehouse and the sound of smashing beer bottles into a trashcan.”

PETER BJORN & JOHN – “REASON TO BE REASONABLE”

Swedish indie pop vets Peter Bjorn and John will celebrate 20 years as a band with their ninth LP Endless Dream, due out in March, and their latest single from the album is the thumping “Reason to Be Reasonable.”

BIG K.R.I.T. – “BALLAD OF THE BASS”

Big K.R.I.T. has been playing this new song on his ongoing tour with Rapsody, and today he gave it its official single release. Come for the neck-snapping first half, stay for the soulful ending.

TUFF SUNSHINE – DIG DEEPER, PEANUT (ALBUM STREAM) & “SUNDAY MEANS SNAKES” VIDEO

Brooklyn band Tuff Sunshine released their new album, Dig Deeper, Peanut, today. It’s 10 tracks of catchy, melodic psych-rock and you can stream the whole thing below. They’ve also just made a not-your-average lyric video for single “Sunday Means Snakes” which you can check out as well.

BY SURPRISE – “BASEMENT”

NJ’s By Surprise were one of the bands in the first wave of the ’90s-style emo revival, but they’ve been silent for a while and now they’re re-emerging with their first new album in eight years, Cosmic Latte, due December 6 via Jetsam-Flotsam. Going by lead single “Basement,” now they’re reviving ’90s-style indie rock (of the Archers of Loaf/Superchunk/Built to Spill variety), and fans of those bands will probably dig this too.

SAY HI – “A MACBOOK PRO TO A NINETIES DELL”

Bedroom pop vet Say Hi is releasing a new album, Diamonds & Donuts, on February 7 via Euphobia Records, and the first single is the amazingly titled “A MacBook Pro To A Nineties Dell,” which kind of sounds like a synthpop rework of an imaginary AC/DC cover of “(I Can’t Get No) Satisfaction.”

J BALVIN – “BLANCO”

Fresh off winning the Latin Grammy for Best Urban Song for “Con Altura,” his collaboration with Rosalía (who won Album of the Year), J Balvin has dropped this kinetic new song.

JHENE AIKO – “NONE OF YOUR CONCERN” (ft. BIG SEAN, prod. FISTICUFFS)

Jhene Aiko hasa returned with a new Fisticuffs-produced single, which features her longtime collaborator Big Sean. As you’d expect from Jhene, it’s chilled-out, minimal R&B, and it’s pretty great.

FORESEEN – “WIDE AWAKE NIGHTMARE”

Finnish crossover thrashers Foreseen have released a new two-song single, featuring the previously released “Infiltrator” and the new “Wide Awake Nightmare.” ‘Tis a ripper.

GRIMES – “SO HEAVY I FELL THROUGH THE EARTH”

Grimes has finally set a release date and revealed the artwork and tracklist for her new album Miss_Anthropocene, and she also released this ethereal, six-minute song that you can read more about here.

MS. LAURYN HILL – “GUARDING THE GATES”

The Queen & Slim soundtrack is out today, including the first Ms. Lauryn Hill solo song in five years, which you can read more about here.

EN ATTENDANT ANA – “WORDS”

Parisian band En Attendant Ana released the terrific Lost and Found last year and will follow that up with Juillet, their second record for Trouble in Mind, on January 24. The band’s sound, accessible jangly indiepop,is just a little winsome (trumpet!), just a little motorik (Stereolab!), and super catchy. It’s also a little Frenchy in vibe but they sing in English and vocalist Margaux Bouchaudon has a soaring voice, as you can hear on the album’s first single, “Words.”

MODEST MOUSE – “ICE CREAM PARTY”

Modest Mouse have released their third new song of 2019, and you can read more about it here.

ENVY – “A STEP IN THE MORNING GLOW”

Japanese screamo vets Envy are releasing their first album in five years this February, and its first proper single is out now. Read more here.
