Mac in milk: "On the Square" video
Mac in milk: “On the Square” video

So many artists, so little time. Each week we review five new albums (of all genres), round up even more new music that we’d call “indie,” and talk about what metal is coming out. We post music news, show recaps, track premieres, and more all day. That includes a lot of tour announcements, a list of tonight’s NYC shows, and NY shows that just went on sale. We publish a monthly playlist of some of our favorite tracks. Here’s a daily roundup with a bunch of interesting, newly released songs in one place…

JAMILA WOODS – “BALDWIN” (ft. NICO SEGAL)

Jamila Woods has shared one more single from her highly anticipated new album LEGACY! LEGACY!, due this Friday (5/10) via Jagjaguwar. Every song on the album is named after a different black or brown icon, and this one is named after James Baldwin. Jamila says, “‘Baldwin’ is a song inspired by the work of James Baldwin, particularly the ‘Letter To My Nephew’ in his book The Fire Next Time. He had an incredible ability to speak about whiteness in a way that was hard-hitting and nuanced, and delivered some of the most elegant reads to white America, providing me a lens to think about how I see whiteness at work in my world today.”

MAC DEMARCO – “ON THE SQUARE”

With his new album Be the Cowboy out this week, Mac DeMarco has just shared a very weird video for “On the Square” that gets into Matthew Barney territory. “This video has been my most intimate experience with milk yet,” says its director, William Sipos Sipos. “At one point I had Mac in a latex mask, shivering in a kiddie pool filled with cold milk. I did not feel like a nice person.” Nonetheless, the effect is unsettling.

SINKANE – “YA SUDAN”

Sinkane has shared another single off his upcoming album Dépaysé. For this one, he says:

I am so inspired by how the recent uprising in Sudan has unified Sudanese people all over the world. I feel like we are truly understanding our identity. It feels inclusive and welcoming. Sudan is one of the most diverse places on Earth. From the Nuba Mountains to Port Sudan. Dongola to Darfur. Kassala to Khartoum. We are people made up of different languages, cultures, and religions. Our differences create our beautiful and rich identity. As for me, growing up outside of Sudan has given depth to my identity. This is the message of ‘Ya Sudan.’

Being Sudanese is about being yourself unapologetically.
Not letting anybody define who you are.

This song is for the Kandakas who have been at the forefront of toppling Omar El-Bashir. And the strong men and children who stand beside them. And all of us outside of Sudan standing together showing the world our resilience. There is no better time than now to be Sudanese.

OLDEN YOLK – “GRAND PALAIS”

Olden Yolk’s second album is out next week via Trouble in Mind and here’s one last early taste before it drops. The band say “Grand Palais” is about “the frivolous search to seek some semblance of spiritual understanding in various places, things, and people outside of ourselves. Much of the song was written through improvisation in the studio alongside percussionist Booker Stardrum, whose frantic drumming is a driving force in the song.” Stardrum’s skittering rhythm, which gives Olden Yolk’s baroque psych-folk a distinct krautrock feel, does help make the song.

PIXX – “ANDEAN CONDOR”

UK artist Hannah Rodgers releases her sophomore album as Pixx, Small Mercies, on June 7 via 4AD. About new single “Andean Condor,” she says, “this song is written about the link between wo/mankind and nature. It is important to recognise how many times women have to face the absurdity of male hierarchy in our modern world. Having had endless conversations with (certain) men who justify the inequality of the sexes by comparing themselves to animals, I thought what better way to help them than to remind those men that they are supposed to be human, with emotional capability and growth.”
