21 New Songs Out Today
So many artists, so little time. Each week we review five new albums (of all genres), round up even more new music that we’d call “indie,” and talk about what metal is coming out. We post music news, show recaps, track premieres, and more all day. That includes a lot of tour announcements, a list of tonight’s NYC shows, and NY shows that just went on sale. We publish a monthly playlist of some of our favorite tracks. Here’s a daily roundup with a bunch of interesting, newly released songs in one place…
JAPANESE BREAKFAST – “HEAD OVER HEELS” (TEARS FOR FEARS COVER)
Japanese Breakfast has taken Tears for Fears’ Big ’80s hit and turned it into something much more intimate. Like her single “Essentially,” this recorded for W Hotels’ W Records.

KELIS – WANDERLAND
Kelis’ classic 2001 sophomore album Wanderland (produced by The Neptunes and featuring both Pusha T and Malice of Clipse) was never officially released in the U.S. and has long been absent on streaming services, but now it’s finally on streaming services. Great news!

ROISIN MURPHY – “INCAPABLE”
Following last year’s series of collaborative 12″ singles with Maurice Fulton, Róisín Murphy has teamed with Sheffield producer Richard Barratt (who also goes by DJ Parrot and Crooked Man) for this slinky, stylish house/disco number. “I thought it might be fun to write from a point of view totally opposite to the usual heartbreak and despair,” Murphy said. “This diva is mildly concerned at her own lack of feeling and it’s beginning to dawn on her that there will be no love without pain.” It’s terrific — more please.

BLANCK MASS – “HOUSE VS. HOUSE”
Fuck Buttons’ Benjamin John Power is releasing a new Blanck Mass album, Violence Mild, on August 16 via Sacred Bones. The first single is “House vs. House,” which is nearly eight minutes of thrilling, eccentric art pop with some truly gorgeous melodies in the mix.

BAS – “FRIED RICE” (ft. J.I.D)
Queens rapper Bas is back with a new single, “Fried Rice,” and this one features his Dreamville labelmate J.I.D who’s been unstoppable lately. They unsurprisingly sound great together and if you like your rap with head-nodding production and wordy, dizzying bars, you should check this out.

IMPERIAL TEEN – “WALKAWAY”
“We are a band that are together and not,” say Imperial Teen on their new single from their forthcoming Now We Are Timeless. “Our collective history is our bond. Physically though, we live in different cities, lead different lives. Walkaway is a song about a feeling we’ve all known. Watching others, near and far and feeling distance and separation from what they’re experiencing. Feeling connected and independent at the same time. Closing the gap of physical distance and making our lives a more connected place.” “Walkaway” is very catchy indie rock, the kind that Imperial Teen do best.

DAPHNI (AKA CARIBOU) – “SIZZLING”
Caribou’s Dan Snaith is back with a new track under his Daphni moniker, an infectious disco jam based around 1981 single “Sizzling Hot” by Paradise. He originally made it just for DJ sets: “From the very first time I played it on New Year’s Eve 2018, it lights up the room every time I play it. The hook is so immediate—people respond to it like it’s a song they already know and love.”

MARIEE SIOUX – “BLACK SNAKES”
Dream-folk singer Mariee Sioux’s anticipated new album Grief In Exile comes out this Friday, and she’s shared one last single ahead of its release. “Black Snakes” is as delicate and gorgeous as Mariee’s best songs, and if you’re unfamiliar with her music, highly recommended for fans of Mazzy Star and Marissa Nadler.

THE ARMED – “FT. FRANK TURNER”
The Armed are one of the more unique punk/metal bands around, and their spastic new single “FT. FRANK TURNER” (which, no, does not feature Frank Turner) only continues to prove that.
Update: Frank Turner tweeted: “O…K. So the band The Armed (who I quite like) have put out a song using my name. Whatever to that. But it also uses some recorded vocals of mine from a session about 8 years ago (a song I never finished). I can see a connect because I demo’d that song with Kurt Ballou once upon a time. Don’t really care about the obvious provocateur stuff (pretty funny really, including pic of @frankcarter23) but not very stoked about recordings getting used like that. Precisely no one involved getting back to me right now. So… there it is. Well done everyone. Enjoy the song, I guess.”

CHANNEL TRES – “SEXY BLACK TIMBERLAKE”
Compton artist Channel Tres, who recently opened Robyn’s tour, is releasing the Black Moses EP on August 2 via GODMODE, and the first single is “Sexy Black Timberlake,” a groovy blend of house music and West Coast rap. “As a black male, I’ve experienced being vilified or objectified depending on what I was wearing or what I was doing,” Tres says. “‘Sexy Black Timberlake’ is me being objectified as a sex object for my skin color. The production was inspired by The Chronic mixed with the west coast dance music I’ve been creating.”

FALLS OF RAUROS – “MEMORY AT NIGHT”
Maine black metallers Falls of Rauros premiered new single “Memory At Night” over at Invisible Oranges, alongside an interview with the band. Check it out HERE.

BLEACHED – “KISS YOU GOODBYE”
LA duo Bleached are headed in a decidedly poppy direction with their new album Don’t You Think You’ve Had Enough, due out July 12. “‘”Kiss you Goodbye’ is about letting go of a relationship that no longer serves you which then allows room for someone new to come into your life,” the band says on Facebook. “Trusting that process is empowering. Turn it up. Roll them down. Put those skates on. And tell that guy or girl to kiss off – you do you this summer.”

CATALDO – “THEY DON’T KNOW ABOUT US”
Seattle-based musician Eric Anderson is releasing a new album as Cataldo, Literally Main Street, due out this fall. The follow-up to 2017’s Keepers, Literally Main Street is produced by John Vanderslice, and its first single, the tender “They Don’t Know About Us,” is out now. “I intimately knew the characters of this song,” Eric says, “the small town world they occupy, and the nature of their relationship but struggled a bit with what to have them actually do–I went through iterations with lots of action and drama but in the end almost nothing happens in this song. It’s not what literally occurs that’s juicy or memorable; it’s all the things that are implied but unspoken. I think that’s true for the two people in the song and also the listener.”

YOUNGHUSBAND – SWIMMERS (ALBUM STREAM)
UK band Younghusband make magic hour music in the great Sunday Morning tradition of The Velvet Underground and early Brian Eno, but have found their own path on great new album Swimmers.

CFM (CHARLES FROM FUZZ, FREEDOM BAND) – “SEQUENCE”
Charles Moothart, who plays in many Ty Segall-related groups (Freedom Band, Fuzz, GØGGS), will release Soundtrack For An Empty Room, his third album as CFM, on July 5 via In the Red. Check out the ripping first single.

Temples will release their third album, Hot Motion, in September but you can check out the warm psych vibes of its title track now.

WORMED – “REMOTE VOID”
Spanish death metallers Wormed are releasing the Metalportal EP on July 19 via Season of Mist, and your first taste is new single “Remote Void.” It’s about as brutal and dense and claustrophobic as you’d expect from this band.

RAMONA – “ARE WE HAVING FUN YET?”
Philly-via-Seattle punks Ramona’s new album Deals, Deals, Deals! drops this Friday via Red Scare, and you can read more about new single “Are We Having Fun Yet?” and its video here.

MILEY CYRUS – “HEAD LIKE A HOLE” (NINE INCH NAILS COVER) (SORT OF)
Miley Cyrus sings a reworked version of Nine Inch Nails’ “Head Like A Hole” in the new Black Mirror episode Rachel, Jack and Ashley Too. Hear the song in the episode, which you can watch now on Netflix.
