23 New Metal Songs Out This Week

Red Death Sickness Divine

It’s been a truly insane week for metal. I reviewed the new SeeYouSpaceCowboy, High Command, and Creeping Death albums for Notable Releases (where there’s also a review of the new Emel Mathlouthi, which is sort of metal-adjacent), and this week also gave us the new Opeth album (read Langdon’s review), and new albums from Borknagar, Car Bomb, Bhleg, Renounced, .gif from god, Fister, and more (read about those in Invisible Oranges’ Upcoming Metal Releases). On top of all that, we got new singles from Alcest, Mayhem, Schammasch, Gatecreeper, Obsequiae, Red Death, Midnight, Saudade, Dawn Ray’d, Candy, Insomnium, and more. Read on for all the metal (and metal adjacent) tracks we posted on BV this week…

ALCEST – “SAPPHIRE”

Alcest’s anticipated new album Spiritual Instinct comes out October 25 via Nuclear Blast, and they’ve now shared a second single off of it. Following the very heavy “Protection,” new single “Sapphire” is more on the band’s shoegazy side, but in a way that pairs very well with the previous track.

TRIBULATION – “STRANGE GATEWAYS BECKON (Live at Södra Teatern)”

Tribulation have a double live album on the way via Metal Blade entitiled Alive & Dead At Södra Teatern. Here’s what the band has to say about it:

“Playing Stockholm is always a special occasion for us, and since we’ve been living here for so long it in a way feels like playing at home. Since it’s a special thing for us, we always try to make it special for everyone else as well. Having the show at Södra Teatern made finding these special things easier than if we had been at a different location since just being there provided us with a beautifully haunting backdrop and gave us half of the ideas. Having the show in two acts is something that we’ve had in mind for quite some time, and being at an old theatre obviously made this the perfect opportunity. Along with the two acts we also had Orvar Säfström as a compere or as a, more dramatic sounding, master of ceremonies framing the evening with two short speeches at the beginning of each act. We played ‘Down Below’ from start til finish in the first act with a stage set up we’ve never used before, something that could hint at a future development. Time will tell. The second act was the more traditional act with the old stage design and an array of old songs. The best thing about it might be that this event might be the first of similar events in the future, but those would, if they happen, obviously be even more grandiose! Again, time will tell.”

Down Below was one of our favorite albums of 2018 in any genre, so we’re pretty excited for this seventeen track release (out digitally on Nov 15). Here’s the first taste:

MAYHEM – “OF WORMS AND RUINS”

Black metal legends Mayhem have unleashed the second single off their upcoming album Daemon (due October 25th via Century Media). It’s called “Of Worms and Ruins,” and it sounds as grotesque as you’d hope from that song title. Read more here.

Minneapolis folk/black metal act Obsequiae are following 2015’s much-loved Aria of Vernal Tombs with their third album, The Palms Of Sorrowed Kings, on November 22 via 20 Buck Spin. Two tracks are streaming now: the folk-oriented intro track “L’autrier m’en aloie,” and the longer, more black metal-leaning “Ceres in Emerald Streams.” Both are pretty great, and already have our hopes high for this album.

Not only are Midnight gearing up for two killer North American tours — one with Obituary, Abbath, and Devil Master, and one with Electric Wizard — they’ve signed a worldwide deal with Metal Blade and released their first single for the label, “Rebirth By Blasphemy.” As you might expect from this band, it’s the kind of thrash/speed metal that manages to both be blackened and evil yet party friendly.
