22 New Songs Out Today

Jenny Hval
Jenny Hval

So many artists, so little time. Each week we review a handful of new albums (of all genres), round up even more new music that we’d call “indie,” and talk about what metal is coming out. We post music news, show recaps, track premieres, and more all day. That includes a lot of tour announcements, a list of tonight’s NYC shows, and NY shows that just went on sale. We publish a monthly playlist of some of our favorite tracks. Here’s a daily roundup with a bunch of interesting, newly released songs in one place…

(SANDY) ALEX G – “SOUTHERN SKY”

With new album House of Sugar out one month from today, (Sandy) Alex G has shared new song “Southern Sky” The laid-back, folky song features backing vocals by Emily Yacina and some lovely violin and a hand-drawn animated video by Elliot Bech.

NILS FRAHM – “ALL ARMED”

Composer and electronic musician Nils Frahm will release Encores 3 on September 20 — it’s the third and final installment of his Encores series, and all three will be collected on one album, All Encores, that’s out October 18. From Encores 3, he’s shared the pulsating and ethereal “All Armed.” “The idea behind All Encores is one we had from before All Melody; to separate releases each with their own distinct musical style and theme, perhaps even as a triple album,” says Nils. “But All Melody became larger than itself and took over any initial concepts. I think the idea of All Encores is like musical islands that compliment All Melody.”

UNDER ATTACK – THROUGH THE BLADE (EP STREAM)

Under Attack is a hardcore punk supergroup featuring vocalist Alex Copeland, guitarist Mark Telfian (Devoid Of Faith, Limp Wrist), bassist Jason Hodges (Suppression), and drummer Dave Witte (Municipal Waste, Discordance Axis, Burnt by the Sun, tons of other bands), and they’ve now dropped an absolutely ripping six-song EP, Through The Blade. Every song is under two minutes, and each one offers up a pure adrenaline rush. Alex Copeland’s filthy scream is no small part of what makes this EP so thrilling, but the not-so-secret weapon is Dave Witte’s skull-crushing skinsmanship holding it all down.

THE HIGHWOMEN – “HIGHWOMEN”

Brandi Carlile, Maren Morris, Amanda Shires and Natalie Hemby make up alt-country supergroup The Highwomen, and they’re releasing their self-titled album on September 6. The group’s name is a play on The Highwaymen, the supergroup of Waylon Jennings, Willie Nelson, Johnny Cash, and Kris Kristofferson, and their newest single is a rewrite of their 1985 theme song, aided by its writer Jimmy Webber.

COARSE – “UNTITLED” (“ONLY DEATH” REMIX ft. LEO ASHLINE OF STREET SECTS)

Coarse — aka Ryan Knowles (ex-Capsize) and Brandon Gallagher (ex-Old Wounds) — are releasing the Cut and Preserved EP on 6131 next week (8/23), and one of its tracks is this new remix of “Only Death” from their 2018 EP I, featuring new vocals by Street Sects singer/screamer Leo Ashline. While the original is a metallic hardcore crusher, this remix is all noisy industrial white noise. It’s a very drastic rework, and pretty cool stuff.

JENNY HVAL – “HIGH ALICE”

Jenny Hval’s new album The Practice of Love is due out September 13 via Sacred Bones, and she’s shared its second single, “High Alice.” “For a while, this song felt like my entire album,” she says. “I had no idea what the rest of it would be, just a feeling like this song and the title, the two words ‘High Alice,’ would get me there. My guiding stars at the time were Clarice Lispector’s The Hour of the Star and Kylie Minogue’s ‘Confide In Me.’ Maybe High Alice is the narrator of this album. I don’t know how I wrote it, it was automatic. But I found it really funny that I mentioned the sea three times. ‘High Alice’ goes to all the places I have taught myself to avoid, like the four Big Themes: Love, death, life, the ocean. The ocean. The ocean.”
