22 New Songs Out Today

So many artists, so little time. Each week we review a handful of new albums (of all genres), round up even more new music that we’d call “indie,” and talk about what metal is coming out. We post music news, show recaps, track premieres, and more all day. That includes a lot of tour announcements, a list of tonight’s NYC shows, and NY shows that just went on sale. We publish a monthly playlist of some of our favorite tracks. Here’s a daily roundup with a bunch of interesting, newly released songs in one place.

Also Bandcamp is waiving its cut of sales and giving 100% of profits directly to artists, so there are several special/exclusive releases out today for Bandcamp’s COVID-19 fundraiser.

MGMT – “AS YOU MOVE THROUGH THE WORLD”

MGMT released the “In the Afternoon” 12″ back in December and they’ve now finally shared the flipside digitally, via Bandcamp. (Today is a good day to buy stuff on Bandcamp, btw.) The seven-minute track is definitely on MGMT’s experimental side, going from ambient drone to noise to flirting with drum-n-bass breakbeats.

MARLIN’S DREAMING – “OUTWARDS CRYING”

New Zealand dreampop band Marlin’s Dreaming will release new album Quotidian, on April 21. “Outwards Crying” is the new single, widescreen and hazy. “‘Outwards Crying’ is about my urge to leave my hometown (Dunedin, NZ) and change my surroundings,” says frontman Semisi Maiai. “Outwards crying is a nature song! For the video we wanted a gritty and off kilter accompaniment to the song, and it turned out to be shooting farm animals and old buildings around Dunedin, which I can’t explain why but seems fitting. I feel like this is our most heavy song on the upcoming album, not in terms of instrumentation, but more how confronting it is emotionally ”

BLAKE MILLS – “VANISHING TWIN”

Blake Mills, who has collaborated with Fiona Apple, Alabama Shakes, Perfume Genius and Phoebe Bridgers (to name just four), will release his new album, Mutable Set, on May 8 via New Deal/Verve. “This record deals with an awareness of two things — people and experiences in life that are precious, and whatever waits down the moat for something to drop,” says Mills. “I’ve seen the phrase ‘mutable set’ used to describe theater backdrops and set props, things like that. And ‘mute’ might be one of the best musical terms ever invented. So ‘Mutable Set’ is a term that deals with anything that could change or be lost all together.” The first single is “Vanishing Twin,” an eerie, slow-building song that gathers steam as it goes — gorgeous strings, a ragged guitar solo — but Blake never lets it boil over. The video, directed by Justin Daashuur Hopkins, is lovely too.

K A G (PRIESTS’ KATIE ALICE GREER) – “WENDY DENG 2020,” NO ONE ELSE ON EARTH EP & 3 COLORS EP

With Bandcamp giving their share of purchases to the artists today, Priests’ Katie Alice Greer has shared two new EPs worth of music plus a single, all of which find her dabbling in electronics. “I started writing this last summer when the apocalypse seemed more like ‘the very near future’ and not ‘right now'” she writes. “It was what I did when I couldn’t figure out how to finish the “real” songs I was writing (or so I thought). I often save links to articles about space, so a few of those were my inspiration for this story about the last people on earth discovering another planet. There is a movie that goes along with it! Can’t really leave the house any time soon so, ideally it’ll be done shortly.”

THE ACACIA STRAIN – “SOLACE AND SERENITY” & “THE LUCID DREAM” (ft. JESS NYX of MORTALITY RATE)

The Acacia Strain have released another two-song single, and like the last one, this one’s got a very cool guest from a killer up-and-coming hardcore band: Jess Nyx of Calgary’s Mortality Rate. She and Vincent Bennett go back and forth on “The Lucid Dream,” and they sound pretty damn great together.

ELLIS – “MARCH 13”

Canadian songwriter Linnea Siggelkow releases her first LP as Ellis, Born Again, in April, and the latest sing she’s shared is “March 13,” a pretty ballad. “‘March 13’ plays right after the last single ‘Embarrassing’ on the track listing,” she writes, “and is a reflection on a night that I did embarrass myself. I acted badly and put someone I cared about in an unnecessary and uncomfortable situation, but refused to admit at the time that I was out of line.”

JPEGMAFIA – “COVERED IN MONEY!”

JPEGMAFIA is back with another single, and this one has a hard-hitting and aggressive first half, an auto-tuned R&B second half, and all kinds of totally weird, out-there sounds going on throughout. It’s awesome.

SPARTA – “MIRACLE”

Former At the Drive In member Jim Ward’s band Sparta have shared another song off their upcoming first album in 14 years, Trust the River, and this one almost sounds like a post-hardcore version of War-era U2.

ADA LEA – “PERFECT WORLD”

Montreal singer and songwriter Alexandra Levy released her debut LP as Ada Lea, what we say in private, last year via Saddle Creek, and she has a new EP, woman, here, due out next week. From that comes “Perfect World,” about which Alexandra says, “this song is about my family, and remembering what it felt like when my brother and I started growing up. Especially remembering that the traditions we’d have as kids would become less and less important, and we’d start seeing less of each other. I just woke up one morning feeling suddenly, incredibly aware that those days had passed for good.”

BLACK PUMAS – “POLITICIANS IN MY EYES” (DEATH COVER)

Austin’s ATO-signed, Grammy-nominated soul band have turned Detroit proto-punk legends Death’s “Politicians In My Eyes” into a smooth soul song.

EYES WITHOUT A FACE – “COLD MOON”

Eyes Without A Face — a new Vancouver band with members of metal bands Seer, Wormwitch, and Boreal Hymn and pop bands Blonde Diamond and Art d’Ecco — have released their second single, and it’s another dose of ’80s goth/synthpop worship.

CHROME WAVES – “A FAIR WIND” / GRIDFAILURE – “DAY TERRORS”

Midwest blackgaze band Chrome Waves and NYC industrial act Chrome Waves have a split coming out next week (3/27) and one song from each is out now. Chrome Waves’ is a soaring, nearly-15-minute song that finds them more or less in post-rock territory, and Gridfailure’s is much less pretty sounding. They contrast each other well.

TEE GRIZZLEY – “PAYROLL” (ft. PAYROLL GIOVANNI)

Tee Grizzley and Payroll Giovanni team up for this booming, bassy, speaker-rattling jam.

TAYLOR ASHTON & AOIFE O’DONOVAN – “LORETTA” (TOWNES VAN ZANDT COVER)

I’m With Her’s Aoife O’Donovan teamed up with Canadian folk artist Taylor Ashton for this Townes Van Zandt cover as part of Cambridge, MA’s Club Passim’s virtual music festival Keep Your Distance Fest. They were scheduled to perform on the same bill at a Wisconsin show, and when that was postponed, separately recorded their parts to the cover they’d planned to close the night with.

PARADISE LOST – “FALL FROM GRACE”

The first taste of UK death-doom vets Paradise Lost’s anticipated new album has arrived and you can read more about it here.

OH LAND – “I MISS ONE WEEK AGO”

“Last week on Wednesday night there was an announcement from the Danish government that they would take further actions to limit the spreading of COVID-19,” Oh Land says. “Every day this past week has felt unreal, and it’s been hard to deal with the massive changes. The only way I could cope emotionally was by writing this song. I miss normal. I love normal. And I can’t wait for everything to be over.”

KRALLICE – “THE WHEEL”

Brooklyn avant-metallers Krallice confirmed they’ll release a new album this year, and it’ll feature “The Wheel” which you can read more about here.

THE RADIO DEPT – ‘YOU FEAR THE WRONG THING, BABY”

“Yes, it’s a weird coincidence,” say the band of the title to their new single. “When we recorded the song we had no idea what was coming. The text is against conservatism and a tribute to youth as a progressive force.”

GOUGE AWAY – “WAVE OF MUTILATION” (PIXIES COVER)

Florida punks Gouge Away are (obviously) named after the Pixies’ Doolittle closer, and today they’ve released a cover of a different song from that album. Read more here.

TETEMA (MIKE PATTON + ANTHONY PATERAS) – “SOLILOQUY”

tētēma, the duo of Mike Patton (Faith No More, Mr. Bungle, etc) and composer Anthony Pateras shared this new song, and Pateras says, “No other band would combine microtonal buchla with hyperactive drumming to serenade Paganini and Leonard Cohen passed out in a hot tub.” True. Read more here.

BEN GIBBARD – “LIFE IN QUARANTINE”

In addition to doing his daily solo acoustic livestreams, Ben Gibbard released this solo acoustic video of a new song he just wrote. Once the song hits streaming services, Ben will donate proceeds from the song to charities. Read more here.
