22 New Songs Out Today

Radiohead at Madison Square Garden
Radiohead at MSG in 2018 (more by Amanda Hatfield)

So many artists, so little time. Each week we review five new albums (of all genres), round up even more new music that we’d call “indie,” and talk about what metal is coming out. We post music news, show recaps, track premieres, and more all day. That includes a lot of tour announcements, a list of tonight’s NYC shows, and NY shows that just went on sale. We publish a monthly playlist of some of our favorite tracks. Here’s a daily roundup with a bunch of interesting, newly released songs in one place…

RADIOHEAD – “ILL WIND”

Radiohead’s “Ill Wind” was originally an outtake from A Moon Shaped Pool that came on a bonus CD included in the deluxe vinyl edition of the record. It’s now been released digitally and you can stream the jazz track here:

GESAFFELSTEIN & THE WEEKND – “LOST IN THE FIRE”

Having recently released the single “Reset,” French producer Gesaffelstein is gearing up to release his new album Hyperion this year, and now he shared another new single, “Lost In The Fire,” which features The Weeknd, who collaborated with Gesaffelstein on two songs on his 2018 EP My Dear Melancholy. It’s catchy stuff, cut from a similar cloth as those My Dear Melancholy collabs. Gesaffelstein is also playing Coachella and Governors Ball this year.

KELSEY LU – “I’M NOT IN LOVE” (10CC COVER)

Vocalist, cellist, and producer Kelsey Lu has covered 10cc’s classic “I’m Not in Love,” that is both reverential but is imbued with her style, too. “This is dedicated to the ones who have ever felt misunderstood in the name of Love, in the name of Self. Who Love the Passion, Love the Grace Of Dramatics, Love the obsession of life and want to Kill the Confusion all while finding beauty in the abstract of growth and humor that surrounds the horrors both within and around us daily.”

THE DANDY WARHOLS – “MOTOR CITY STEEL”

There’s a little ’80s cowpunk spirit in The Dandy Warhols’ rambling, storytellin’ new song “Motor City Steel.” It’s from the Dandys’ new album, Why You So Crazy, which is out January 25.

BLOODPOP® – “NEWMAN”

Once best known as a Grimes collaborator named Blood Diamonds, BloodPop® is now a big-name pop producer who’s worked with Madonna, Justin Bieber, Lady Gaga, and more, but he still finds time to release his own stuff too, like this addictively dancey new single “Newman.” The single comes with the announcement of two shows: the Matte Fashion Week Party in NYC on February 8 and Jewel Nightclub in Las Vegas on March 8. IN FLAMES – “I, THE MASK”

Swedish melodeath vets In Flames are releasing their 13th album I, The Mask on March 1 via Eleven Seven Music/Nuclear Blast, and the title track is out now. As you’d probably expect from current-day In Flames, it’s more on the pop side than their most classic material, but there’s hints of the old days in some of the riffage. In Flames are also touring North America this year.

RUDIMENTAL – “SCARED OF LOVE” (ft. RAY BLK & STEFFLON DON)

UK dance-pop band Rudimental are releasing their third album Toast To Our Differences on January 25 via Major Toms/Big Beat Records, and new single “Scared of Love” brings in two rising UK vocalists, R&B singer Ray BLK and rapper Stefflon Don. Like a lot of their singles, it’s part garage, part house, and all pop bliss.

THE 1865 – “BUCKSHOT”

Brooklyn punks The 1865 are releasing their new album, Don’t Tread On We!, on January 25 via Nas’ Mass Appeal Records. The band was founded by Sacha Jenkins (The White Mandingos, The Wilding Incident) and they’re fronted by Carolyn “Honeychild” Coleman (Apollo Heights, Badawi), and they descrbe themselves as “Bad Brains meets Foo Fighters in a black woman’s hair salon for a cup of tea,” which should give you a pretty good idea of how they sound. Every song on the new album explores life in 1865 America, and the result is something very depressing and very powerful.

JACQUEES – “YOU” (REMIX ft. BLUEFACE)

R&B singer Jacquees has released a new remix of “You” from his 2018 album 4275, and it features Blueface, who’s quickly become both a target of hatred and also a much-loved artist due to his atypical approach to rapping. Personally, I think he’s pretty good. – Andrew

ANDREW COMBS – “TOO STONED TO CRY” (2019 RECUT)

Alt-country singer Andrew Combs is reissuing his 2012 debut album Worried Man next week (1/18), and it comes with two re-recorded songs from the album. One of them, “Too Stoned to Cry,” is out now. “I’ve always wanted to re-record ‘Too Stoned to Cry,’” said Combs. “I love the song, but can’t stand my vocal take on the original. I sound so young and pitchy! This is just an updated version, somewhat replicating how we play it every night on the road.” Catch Andrew Combs on tour with Erin Rae soon.

RABIT – LANA DEL REY & TIRZAH REMIXES

Houston producer Rabit released another of his screw tapes, THE DOPE SHOW, which features chopped and screwed tracks by Lana Del Rey, Tirzah, and more. (There’s also one with Aphex Twin but it looks like you have to buy the album to hear that one). Listen to the Lana and Tirzah tracks here:

EERIE WANDA – “PET TOWN”

Eerie Wanda have shared the winsome title track from their new album Pet Town and the video is appropriately filled with cute cats.

JH1.FS3 (PUCE MARY & JESSE SANES) – “PIPE TALK”

JH1.FS3 is the collaborations between Frederikke Hoffmeier (Puce Mary) and Jesse Sanes (Liebestod) and they’ve just released their debut single. “Emotional exploration through sound can become so indulgent that it overshadows the journey,” reads the press release from Dais Record. “JH1.FS3 eschews mining the human condition as mediation, opting for nuanced analysis rather than vanity. Using the seeds of improvisation as their root construct, the duo work without code, vocabulary or genre. Instead, they systematically work as individuals in tandem, using disparate and varied sounds and sources to create gauzy collages of ideas, sound and visceral sense reaction”

HERZOG – “LITTLE BIG STAR”

Cleveland’s Herzog make very traditional indie rock, big on hooks and quotable lyrics, and make the sounds of 1993 seem like just yesterday, not 25 years ago. This is the lead single from Me vs. You, their first album in five years. Read more about it in Indie Basement.

BELLOWS – “DENOUEMENT” & “WHAT CAN I TELL YOU ABOUT THE WORLD?”

Bellows, the project of Brooklyn musician Oliver Kalb, have announced a follow-up to 2016’s Fist & Palm. The Rose Gardener comes out February 22 via Topshelf, and videos for its first two singles, “Denouement” and “What Can I Tell You About the World?” are out now. Oliver says “Denouement” is “a bitter and anxious song about deep obsessive hand-wringing,” while “What Can I Tell You About The World?” is “about leaving behind judgment and worldly pettiness.”
