23 New Songs Out Today

Honey Harper
Honey Harper

So many artists, so little time. Each week we review a handful of new albums (of all genres), round up even more new music that we’d call “indie,” and talk about what metal is coming out. We post music news, show recaps, track premieres, and more all day. That includes a lot of tour announcements, a list of tonight’s NYC shows, and NY shows that just went on sale. We publish a monthly playlist of some of our favorite tracks. Here’s a daily roundup with a bunch of interesting, newly released songs in one place…

THE RENTALS – “FORGOTTEN ASTRONAUT”

Matt Sharp continues his trip into outer space with the ambitious new Rentals album that was made with Yeah Yeah Yeahs’ Nick Zinner on guitar, The Killers’ Ronnie Vannucci on drums, and Flaming Lips collaborator Dave Fridmann as mixing engineer, and that’s getting rolled out with one song every two weeks. The second single is “Forgotten Astronaut,” which sounds like a cross between glam-era Bowie and Yoshimi-era Flaming Lips and finds Matt thinking about The Beatles and famous astronauts. Read more about the premise of the song here.

CARDI B FREESTYLE

Cardi B says she has a new album in the works, and in the meantime she uploaded a new freestyle to Instagram. And if that sounds like shrug no big deal not really a song just an IG video, you should click play and see just how much of a big deal it is.

HOT SNAKES – “CHECKMATE”

The reunited Hot Snakes are gearing up for a UK tour and are releasing a new 7″ single they’ll be selling at the merch table. For those who can’t make it to one of the gigs, it’s also available digitally and is a signature smoke-em-if-you-got-em punk burner.

SPOON – “THE UNDERDOG (DEMO)”

Spoon have been releasing demo versions of the songs featured on their recent best-of compilation, Everything Hits at Once, and here’s a bare-bones — just acoustic guitar and Britt Daniel’s double-tracked voice — early version of “The Underdog,” which would take on a brassy arrangement on 2007’s Ga Ga Ga Ga Ga.

HONEY HARPER – “IN LIGHT OF US”

After releasing singles over the last few years, William Fussell is ready to drop his debut album as Honey Harper — it’s titled Starmaker and will be out March 6 via ATO. “In Light of Us” has a distinct ’70s country feel, with a little Blue Oyster Cult and modern dreampop in there as well. “When I turned 18 I left home and moved to Decatur, GA with my best friends,” says Fussell. “‘In Light of Us’ is a significant song for me as it represents that time; the light and dark psychedelic paths that led and inspired the beginning of my journey to Starmaker.” The video, likewise, features footage from Fussell’s youth during that time.

DEV HYNES – “HAIR” & “KISSED ALL YOUR SCARS”

Blood Orange’s Dev Hynes composed the score for new film Queen & Slim that also features soundtrack contributions from Lauryn Hill, Megan Thee Stallion, Vince Staples, and more. Here’s two compositions from his score, which is somber, elegiac and a little haunting. The soundtrack is out this Friday, while the film is out November 25.

XENIA RUBINOS – “DIOSA” & “BUGEISHA”

Fresh off singing on the new Battles album, experimental pop artist Xenia Rubinos has released a new double single. They’re both very different from each other, and both pretty different than anything Xenia’s done before, and they’re already making us excited to see where she goes next.
