23 New Songs Out Today
So many artists, so little time. Each week we review five new albums (of all genres), round up even more new music that we’d call “indie,” and talk about what metal is coming out. We post music news, show recaps, track premieres, and more all day. That includes a lot of tour announcements, a list of tonight’s NYC shows, and NY shows that just went on sale. We publish a monthly playlist of some of our favorite tracks. Here’s a daily roundup with a bunch of interesting, newly released songs in one place…
WEYES BLOOD – MOVIES
“We are enamored with Movies. Our generation is the most cinematically saturated of all time. Videotapes, DVD’s, streaming… Spielberg…all of it has thrust us into an endless loop of consumption,” says Weyes Blood’s Natalie Mering of the subject of her new single. “They provide formative experiences as children, standing larger than life before our fragile adolescent minds. I wanted to take a look into the emotionally manipulative powers of Movies – how have Movies succeeded in telling the myths of our time? How have they failed (miserably)? What is the consequent effect on a society of beings looking for themselves in the myths on the screen? It’s safe to say that they have failed us, but I can’t help it…I love Movies.” Natalie also directed a movie, well a video for “Movies,” that takes place in the movies (and underwater) and fits perfectly with the song’s arpeggiated synth swells and dramatic swoons. The song’s from her new album Titanic Rising, out April 5 via Sub Pop.

RICHARD HAWLEY – “OFF MY MIND”
Guitar ace, former Pulp and Longpigs member and stylish crooner in his own right, Richard Hawley will release his new album, Further, which is out June 7. We’re used to lushly orchestrated pop ballads from Richard but “Off My Mind” is a full-on rocker which really lets him cut loose on his instrument.

FULL OF HELL – “BURNING MYRRH”
Full of Hell have finally released the first single off Weeping Choir, and revealed that the album comes out May 17 via Relapse. “Burning Myrrh” is grindy death metal at its most purely evil. The attack is as brutal and whiplash-inducing as you’d expect from Full of Hell, and the melodies sound like they could score horror flicks.

JAMILA WOODS – “EARTHA”
Jamila Woods has shared a third single off her anticipated new album LEGACY! LEGACY! (due 5/10 via Jagjaguwar). “EARTHA’ was inspired by artist/activist Eartha Kitt, and Jamila says, “‘Who gonna share my love for me with me?’ These are the thoughts that play in your head after an argument with your partner. These are the pages you write in your journal the next morning. This is everything you wish you could have said, or everything you’ve said a million times without it being heard. The moment you realize you are worthy of more. Inspired by the badass spirit and wisdom of Eartha Kitt.”

TIERRA WHACK – “UNEMPLOYED”
Tierra Whack continues to drop a new single a week, and she’s now back with “Unemployed.” The last one saw her in melodic sing-rapping mode, but this one’s got a neck-snapping beat and Whack sounds tough as nails over it.

THE CRANBERRIES – “WAKE ME WHEN IT’S OVER”
The Cranberries are releasing one final album following the tragic death of singer Dolores O’Riordan. In The End is due out April 26, and about its second single, “Wake Me When It’s Over,” lead guitarist Noel Hogan says, “this was a song Dolores had been working on for a little while. It’s a fun song to play and it’s bright and quite uplifting. It’s very much a classic Dolores song with a soft verse and a massive chorus.”

THE DREAM SYNDICATE – “PUT SOME MILES ON”
The Dream Syndicate have shared new track “Put Some Miles On” from the band’s forthcoming album, These Times, which is out in May. Steve Wynn and crew take the talking blues form and take it into outer space.

MARK MULCAHY – “TAKING BABY STEPS”
Miracle Legion frontman Mark Mulcahy will release new solo album, The Gus, on May 7 via his Mezzotint label. The album features appearances by Rain Phoenix and J Mascis, and the first single is the rather roaring, anthemic “Taking Baby Steps,” which Mark says is “the story of letting a long lost friend off the hook.”

DMBQ – “NO THINGS”
Japan’s DMBQ (aka Dynamite Masters Blues Quartet) released Keenly — their first album in 10 years — in 2018 via Ty Segall’s God? imprint which found them to be just as fierce and awesomely wigged-out as ever. They’ve just shared the video for Keenly track “No Things” which features footage from their one-of-a-kind, wild live shows. Let’s hope we get to see those in person soon.

HETHER FORTUNE – “FORGET THE NIGHT”
Former Wax Idols leader (before they went on indefinite hiatus) Hether Fortune has been releasing solo material. Last month she shared the PJ Harvey-esque “Sister,” and now she follows it with “Forget the Night,” which features Mikal Cronin on saxophone. “Forget the Night” is “definitely new sonic territory for me,” Hether writes, “& I’m really proud of it. It’s about dealing with depression & how it can feel like the sun will never come out again.”

JOYERO – “SALT MINE”
One half of Wye Oak, multi instrumentalist Andy Stack, signed to Merge with a new solo project, Joyero. “Today I’m sharing some music that has been a long time coming,” he writes. “I recorded it out in the desert last winter, and the name of the project is Joyero. Sounds like Joy Arrow. Or Joy Air, Oh! ‘Salt Mine’ draws on lingering physical paranoias, persistent truths which keep coming in spite of the barriers that we erect. More songs about paranoia coming soon, so stay tuned!”

ASEETHE – “NO REALM”
Experimental sludge trio Aseethe recorded their upcoming album Throes with Shane Hochstetler at Steve Albini’s Chicago studio Electrical Audio, and it comes out May 17 via Thrill Jockey. The first single is “No Realm,” which is relentlessly crushing and already getting our hopes for this album high. The band also has upcoming tour dates with Vile Creature and Primitive Man.

SAINT VITUS – “BLOODSHED”
Doom legends Saint Vitus have unleashed a second single off their first album with original vocalist Scott Reagers in 24 years. “Bloodshed” sees Saint Vitus staying true to the fuzzed-out riffage they helped define decades ago, and this one comes with an awesomely messy guitar solo.

PLAGUE VENDOR – “NEW COMEDOWN”
California garage punks Plague Vendor are releasing their new John Congleton-produced album By Night on June 7 via Epitaph, and they’ve shared lead single “New Comedown,” which starts out with the band keeping their cool but eventually erupts into the kind of insanity Plague Vendor are usually known for. If you’re looking forward to that upcoming Refused/Hives tour, you’ll probably dig this song too.

GLASSING – “LOBE”
Austin’s GLASSING are releasing their sophomore album Spotted Horse on May 17 via Brutal Panda, and the first single is “Lobe,” which feels right at home on Brutal Panda’s roster of spastic, heavy rock. It finds the middle ground between post-hardcore and atmospheric black metal, and fans of either genre will probably dig this.

PAPERCUTS – KATHLEEN SAYS EP
Papercuts (aka Jason Quever) has followed up Parallel Universe Blues with this digital-only EP featuring two new originals: “Kathleen Says” is the kind of wall-of-sound indie that Quever does so well, and “Comb in Your Hair” is a delicate acoustic number. There’s also a cover of Jackson C Frank’s “Blues Run the Game” which here is transformed into a very Papercuts arrangement.

LUST FOR YOUTH “GREAT CONCERNS”
Lust for Youth, the Scandinavian duo of Hannes Norrvide and Malthe Fischer, will release their new self-titled album on June 7 via Sacred Bones. The first single, “Great Concerns,” dabbles in late-’80s dark synthpop, taking it further into the abyss.

ALBERICH – “CHILSONG CHAMBER”
Noise artist Alberich has shared a second song off his first album in eight years, Quantized Angel (due 4/12 via Hospital Productions). While the last single was a little more atmospheric, this one channels thumping house beats and hip hop turntablism, but still in that weird, noisy Alberich way.

EKULU – “HALF ALIVE” & “EMULATION”
NYC’s Ekulu, who just opened for Youth of Today in their shared hometown last night, have now followed their 2018 self-titled EP with a new two-song single on Triple B Records. As on last year’s EP, Ekulu blend thrashy metal riffs with a hardcore bark, but it doesn’t just sound like a lost relic of the crossover thrash era. Ekulu sound fresh today too, and there’s an ever so slightly modern touch to the production. Hear these songs live at the United Blood and Sound & Fury festivals.

KOOL KEITH – “UNCRUSHABLE” / DEAD CROSS – “CHURCH OF THE MOTHERFUCKERS” MASHUP
Kool Keith is releasing a 7″ on Justin Pearson’s Three One G label, and it features the previously-released Planet B remix of “Blast,” as well as this official mashup of Keith’s new single “Uncrushable” and “Church of the Motherfuckers” by metal supergroup Dead Cross (featuring Pearson, Faith No More’s Mike Patton, Slayer’s Dave Lombardo, and Retox’s Michael Crain). Whether or not you’re usually big on mashups, it’s hard to deny that these songs sound killer together. Listen at Rolling Stone.

QUELLE CHRIS – “OBAMACARE”
Quelle Chris has shared another song off his new album Guns, which comes out next week (3/29) via Mello Music Group. “Obamacare” sees Chris delivering clever wordplay and zany references over a clattering, psychedelic beat.

SAINTHOOD REPS – “BURNING SHEEP”
Long Island post-hardcore staples Sainthood Reps are back with their first song in six years, which we wrote more about here.

DREAM RITUAL – TRIPS AROUND THE SUN (EP STREAM)
Dream Ritual’s new EP Trips Around the Sun mixes grungy post-hardcore and trippy psychedelia. It comes out this Friday but you can stream it now and read more here.

WAND – “WALKIE TALKIE”
A noisy pop song with a chugging groove, “Walkie Talkie” is the latest single of WAND’s forthcoming Laughing Matter, which is out one month from today.
