23 New Songs Out Today

So many artists, so little time. Each week we review five new albums (of all genres), round up even more new music that we’d call “indie,” and talk about what metal is coming out. We post music news, show recaps, track premieres, and more all day. That includes a lot of tour announcements, a list of tonight’s NYC shows, and NY shows that just went on sale. We publish a monthly playlist of some of our favorite tracks. Here’s a daily roundup with a bunch of interesting, newly released songs in one place…

STORMZY – “VOSSI BOP”

UK grime great Stormzy is back with his first single of 2019, and it comes with a video starring Idris Elba. It’s a very cool and powerful video, and the song is undeniable.

ALDOUS HARDING – “ZOO EYES”‘

One of the standout cuts from Aldous Harding’s transfixing new album, Designer, is also one of its most mysterious. “All fear is cream that sits above the classroom of you dreams” is one of the many rich, enigmatic lyrical images of this song.

KEVIN MORBY – “CONGRATULATIONS”

One of the biggest moments on Kevin Morby’s ambitious new album Oh My God, which is out today, is joyous number that celebrates waking up to live another day.

WILLIE NELSON – “RIDE ME BACK HOME”

Just a few days ahead of his 86th birthday, country icon Willie Nelson has announced his new album, Ride Me Back Home, which will be out June 21. The album features a mix of originals and covers, including Billy Joel’s “Just the Way You Are,” Mac Davis’ “It’s Hard To Be Humble,” and Guy Clark’s “Immigrant Eyes” and “My Favorite Picture Of You.” He’s shared the the title track which is as mellow as Willie’s voice.

PAUL RUDD & JIMMY FALLON – YOU SPIN ME ROUND (DEAD OR ALIVE COVER)

Paul Rudd and Jimmy Fallon really like doing these shot-for-shot remakes of cheesy ’80s music videos, having already tackled Styx’s “Too Much Time on My Hands” and Go West’s “King of Wishful Thinking,” they now turn to Dead or Alive’s 1985 hit “You Spin Me Round (Like a Record).” Like the others there’s no wink-wink joking, doing it as close to the original as possible. You can compare and contrast against the original:

RAMMSTEIN – “RADIO”

German industrial metal act have never been the most subtle band, and new single “Radio” is no different. The song itself is about the power of music and the radio as its conduit. That theme plays out in its video that plays off their country’s troubled past, with Rammstein as a 1930s big band whose broadcast leads to revolt. (The song is pretty catchy too.) “Radio” is from their new self-titled album that’ll be out May 17.

THE NATIONAL – “TURN ON ME”

Columbia Records and HBO’s new collection of original songs inspired by Game of Thrones, For the Throne, came out today. It’s 14 tracks long, and we’re highlighting two in particular. The first is from The National, and it simultaneously manages to sound like The National’s classic material and something that would fit into the Game of Thrones universe, which is pretty impressive.

ROSALÍA & A.CHAL – “ME TRAICIONASTE”

The second For the Throne track we’re highlighting is from Rosalia and A.CHAL. “Me traicionaste” translates to “you betrayed me,” which is certainly a common GoT theme. While it doesn’t sound like music that could’ve come from Westeros (perhaps from Valyria?), “Me Traicionaste” does mix flamenco beats, heavy bass and vocoder for a song that would’ve sounded right at home on El Mal Querer.

TAYLOR SWIFT – “ME!” (ft. BRENDON URIE OF PANIC! AT THE DISCO)

After teasing it earlier this week, Taylor Swift returned today with her first new single since 2017’s Reputation, “ME!” It features Brendon Urie of Panic! At the Disco (who are having a resurgence lately thanks to the ridiculously popular “High Hopes”) and it was written and produced by Lorde collaborator Joel Little. Both the song and the video (starring Taylor and Brendon) are the kind of big pop production you’d expect from a team like this.

JAMES BLAKE – “MULHOLLAND”

The vinyl release of James Blake’s 2019 album Assume Form came with the bonus track “Mulholland,” and that track is now streaming digitally too. It sees him in piano ballad mode and mostly utilizing pitched-up vocals, but he brings in his natural voice for a bit towards the end.

BLACK BELT EAGLE SCOUT – “HALF COLORED HAIR”

Black Belt Eagle Scout’s new limited 7″ single, Loss & Relax b/w Half Colored Hair came out today via Saddle Creek. We heard the a-side earlier this month, and here’s the b-side, a lovely, melancholy track.

DEATH ANGEL – “THE PACK”

Bay Area thrash vets Death Angel have shared another song from their upcoming album Humanicide (due 5/31 via Nuclear Blast), and like the title track, this new song sees Death Angel staying true to the sounds of their classic ’80s era.

LORD DYING – MYSTERIUM TREMENDUM (ALBUM STREAM)

Lord Dying’s new LP has some of the roaring sludge that they’ve always been best known for, but it mostly takes their sound in proggier directions than ever before. It’s their most ambitious, limitless album to date.

CHRISSIE HYNDE – “CAROLINE, NO” (BEACH BOYS COVER) & “YOU DON’T KNOW WHAT LOVE IS” (BILLIE HOLIDAY COVER)

Pretenders leader Chrissie Hynde will release a new covers album titled Valve Bone Woe in September featuring jazzy takes on songs by the Beach Boys, Frank Sinatra, Hoagy Carmichael, Charlie Mingus, John Coltrane, Nick Drake, Rodgers and Hammerstein, Day Davies and more. “I often bemoan what I regard as a decline in melody in popular music and I wanted to sing melodies,” Hynde told Clash Magazine. You can Check out her take on The Beach Boys’ “Caroline No” and Billie Holliday’s “You Don’t Know What Love Is.:

OMB PEEZY – PREACHER TO THE STREETS (MIXTAPE STREAM)

OMB Peezy is back with a new 16-song mixtape and features come from T.I., G-Eazy, Boosie Badazz, Sada Baby, and Lil Durk.

SCHOOLBOY Q – “5200”

ScHoolboy Q’s new album CrasH Talk is out now and there’s a lot to like about it. One of the early highlights is the Kendrick-assisted “5200.”

EMPATH – “ROSES THAT CRY”

Philly band Empath were set to release their debut album, Active Listening: Night on Earth, earlier this month via Get Better Records, but it’s been pushed back to May 3. They’ve shared another new single, “Roses that Cry,” which sticks to their general style of dirtying up the bones of a catchy pop track with layers of noise and sludge.

BRUCE SPRINGSTEEN – “HELLO SUNSHINE”

Bruce Springsteen has shared the first taste of his upcoming album, which he calls “a return to my solo recordings” and says features “cinematic orchestral arrangements,” and this song lives up to that description. You can read more here.

ROB BURGER – “SOULS OF WINTER” (ft. LAURIE ANDERSON)

Laurie Anderson lends guest lead vocals to the n ew song by composer/musician Rob Burger, which you can read more about here.

TOTH – “PICTURE OF YOU”

Tōth, aka Brooklyn artist and Rubblebucket co-founder Alex Toth, has his solo debut out in May via Northern Spy, and here’s another lovely orchestral song from it. “Ironically I had a show on a bill with my ex’s band early on in the birth of Tōth,” he says of the song’s origins. “I wrote this song the day of a show and performed it that same night. It’s sort of a look into how we don’t have control over our thoughts and what the feels like when we are processing loss or trying to get over a person or addiction.”
