23 New Songs Out Today

So many artists, so little time. Each week we review five new albums (of all genres), round up even more new music that we’d call “indie,” and talk about what metal is coming out. We post music news, show recaps, track premieres, and more all day. That includes a lot of tour announcements, a list of tonight’s NYC shows, and NY shows that just went on sale. We publish a monthly playlist of some of our favorite tracks. Here’s a daily roundup with a bunch of interesting, newly released songs in one place…

(SANDY) ALEX G – “GRETEL”

Alex Giannascoli will release his new (Sandy) Alex G album, House of Sugar, on September 13 via Domino. The first single is the expansive and moody rock track “Gretel,” making for a nice album appetizer.

BEDOUINE – “ONE MORE TIME”

Says Bedouine (aka Azniv Korkejian) of the latest shared song from her upcoming Bird Songs of a Killjoy: “’One More Time’ contemplates the difference between being with someone versus being alone; Whether a partnership should greatly change your life or allow you to continue carving independent paths. Khalil Gibran famously says lovers should be like two pillars holding up the same temple yet out from each other’s shadow. The song contemplates that in a cyclical relationship,” It’s a beautiful track and the album’s out June 21.

KATE DAVIS – “RBBTS”

Kate Davis has a background in jazz, but she’s shifted to a style more reminiscent of singer-songwriter indie rock for her upcoming album Trophy, due out November 8 via Solitaire Recordings. Sharon Van Etten calls her “one of my favorite singers today … I have admired Kate’s sense of melody and phrasing since the day we met.” The two worked together on Sharon’s song “Seventeen,” and Sharon discussed the process in an episode of the Song Exploder podcast, and with Greg Kot and Jim DeRogatis in a Sound Opinions interview (where you can hear a demo version of “Seventeen” that Kate sings on, too).

TORCHE – “TIMES MISSING”

Torche have shared a second single off Admission, and this one sees them taking their sound a little closer to the recent boom of Hum-like sludgy shoegaze. Torche are just as good at this kinda thing as they are at their faster-paced “bubblegum sludge,” as you can hear below. Torche also gearing up to tour with Wear Your Wounds. Speaking of…

WEAR YOUR WOUNDS – “SHRINKING VIOLET”

Wear Your Wounds, Converge frontman J Bannon’s solo-project-turned-full-band, have shared another single off their anticipated new album Rust On The Gates of Heaven and it’s a good one. It falls somewhere between post-rock, goth, prog, and classic metal, and Bannon & co. have no issue blending all these sounds seamlessly.

FRUIT BATS – “OCEAN”

“This is a song about late bloomers, late discoveries, adult baptism, coming-of-age when you’re way past the right time to do that,” says Fruit Bats main man Eric D. Johnson of the last track released from upcoming album Gold Past Life. “About growing, I guess. And how a good love can help you do all of that. In short, this is a lovey-dovey song I hope you enjoy.” The album’s out June 21 via Merge.

MAL BLUM – “SALT FLATS”

New York’s Mal Blum is releasing a new album, Pity Boy, on July 12 via Don Giovanni Records. “The song is about some heavy subject matter,” Mal says on Facebook, “and our friend Frances did a great job with the video, honoring that and adding visual beauty and some levity with the racing metaphor.” Video director Frances Beaver says that making the video “I went along with the metaphor in Mal’s lyrics. I loved that salt could be a remnant of emotionally bruising words and also a seasoning to make the person feel better about having said them; that the Salt Flats (the geological phenomenon) could be a place where one could stay for eternity in the comfort of those bruising words. The story of a racer who can’t stop coming back to the Flats to break records — even though it’s dangerous for them — came along naturally since the Salt Flats are famous for high speed ground records.”

SHANNON LAY – “NOWHERE”

Shannon Lay of Feels will release her new solo album August, appropriately, on August 31. It’s her first album for Sub Pop (2017’s Living Water came out via Kevin Morby’s Mare Records imprint on Woodsist.) Ty Segall, who drafted her to be in his Freedom Band on his upcoming tour, produced the album. “I believe whoever you record with tends to affect the mood of music and Ty really brought this jovial sense that I hadn’t really explored yet,” she says. “Once you get rolling with him, he just throws these ideas at the wall. And you’re like, ‘I would never have thought of that!’ I couldn’t have hoped for a better guide and energy to help create this record.” The first single is the lovely psychedelic folk rock number “Nowhere.” In addition to touring as part of Freedom Band, she’ll be out with Mikal Cronin this fall.

TY SEGALL – “TASTE”

Speaking of Ty, his new album First Taste is out in August and this is, uh, the first taste — an awesome, bongo-fueled wig-out that comes with a phantasmagoric, horror-themed video that makes room for a little song-and-dance too.

ADVANCE BASE – “EITHER YOU DON’T LOVE ME OR I DON’T LOVE YOU”

Owen Ashworth is reissuing a remastered version of Advance Base’s Magnetic Fields covers EP, Tomorrow’s Home Today, via Orindal Records on September 13. Ahead of that he’s shared his cover of “Either You Don’t Love Me or I Don’t Love You” from Magnetic Fields’ 1992 album The House of Tomorrow.

CULTURE CITY (CULTURE ABUSE) – “WAR TIME DUB”

Culture City is Culture City with Chris Owens of LORDS and Danny Nog, and their new single “War Time Dub” comes with a live dub mix by Culture Abuse singer David Kelling. Kelling says, “CULTURE CITY is our true expression through art. CULTURE CITY is doing whatever we want with whoever we want. Music has no borders or limitations. The only restrictor is yourself if you overthink or believe the bullshit you are fed by those that have lost their imagination. Don’t be afraid to be yourself. DREAM ON. This is shaking off any assumptions or expectations of who or what you think we are and this is only the beginning.”

KOOL KEITH – “TURN THE LEVELS”

Kool Keith’s new album KEITH comes out July 12 via Mello Music Group, and following recent single “Zero Fux” comes new single “Turn The Levels.” Like the previous single, it’s a head-nodding, psychedelic throwback (produced by The Beatnuts’ Psycho Les) that reminds you Kool Keith never goes out of style.

JEROMES DREAM – “DRONE BEFORE PARLOR VIOLENCE”

Screamo vets Jeromes Dream are gearing up for their first album in 18 years, and they’ve now shared second single “Drone Before Parlor Violence.” It’s a nice mix of melody and aggression, and it continues to prove that the time away hasn’t made Jeromes Dream lose their touch one bit.

VALEE – RUNNIN’ RICH (EP STREAM)

Valee continues to rise and today he dropped the surprise EP Runnin’ Rich. It’s a sleepy sounding collection of songs, and features come from Vic Mensa, G Herbo, and King Louie.

ENFORCED – “SKINNED ALIVE” (ft. DWID HELLION OF INTEGRITY)

Richmond thrashers Enforced are releasing new album At The Walls on July 19 via WAR Records, and it features artwork designed by Integrity frontman Dwid Hellion, who also contributes to lead single “Skinned Alive.” “Dwid was an absolute pleasure to work with,” Enforced vocalist Knox Colby tells Revolver. “As a lifelong Integrity fan, it was such an experience working alongside a personal hero of mine for the album artwork and the back-and-forth with the lyrics. Dwid was into what we wanted to achieve and hit all levels with the artwork and vocal delivery. I couldn’t be happier with what he gave us and I hope to collaborate more in the future.” Listen to the song HERE.

BURIED DREAMS – “D.I.E.”

Boston hardcore band Buried Dreams are releasing new album 9 Reasons Not To Live on June 18 via Triple B Records, and its latest single is the bone-crushing “D.I.E.”

LITTLE SNAKE – “MESSAGE”

DJ/producer Little Snake is releasing the Lost In Spirals EP on June 21 via Brainfeeder, and you can hear the spastic new single “Message” now.

LLOYD COLE – “VIOLINS”

“When I was 27, the concept of the washed up older guy seemed very entertaining,” says Cole. “Now I’m starting to think that old age could be a lot more fun. Because really what have we got to lose?” He sounds like he’s having fun on “Violins,” experimenting with synthpop and working with former Commotions members Neil Clark and Blair Cowan for the first time since 1987. His new album, Guesswork, is out in later this month.

RUSSIAN BATHS – “PARASITE”

Brooklyn band Russian Baths’ new single balances the vocals of Jess Rees’ high pitch against the lower register of Luke Koz’s, all while guitars trade barbs between a jagged atonal clean and a thundering distortion.

DRAWING BOARDS – THE MESSAGE (ALBUM STREAM)

Drawing Boards, the NYC-based band that features ex members of Dirty on Purpose, Sisters, TEEN and Darlings, will release The Message this Friday and should appeal to fans of If you’re a fan of classic ’90s indie rock and shoegaze.
