24 New Metal Songs Out This Week

The new Knocked Loose album is out today, and I think it’s one of the very best albums that this whole recent metalcore renaissance has resulted in so far; you can read my review of it in Notable Releases. This week also gave us the undefinable debut album from Chicago maniacs meth. (which I also reviewed for Notable Releases), the first Sacred Reich album in 23 years (stream it below), the first In Cold Blood album in 21 years (ditto), and more. We also got tons of cool singles, including tracks from some of the metal albums we’re anticipating before 2019 ends. New singles featured below include tracks by Alcest, Exhorder, No One Knows What The Dead Thinks, Monolord, Cannabis Corpse, Kayo Dot, Coffins, Chino Moreno covering Christian Death, and more. Read on for all the metal (and metal adjacent) songs we posted on BV this week…

ALCEST – “PROTECTION”

French black metal/shoegaze blenders Alcest have an anticipated new album on the way, and lead single “Protection” finds Alcest sounding meaner and heavier than they have in a very long time. Read more here.

EXHORDER – “HALLOWED SOUND”

New Orleans thrash/groove vets Exhorder are gearing up to release their first album in 27 years, Mourn the Southern Skies, on September 20th via Nuclear Blast, and needless to say, it is very anticipated. Lead single “My Time” was genuinely great, and it nailed a balance between recalling Exhorder’s classics and embracing modern production, and the same is true of this just released second single “Hallowed Sound.”

NO ONE KNOWS WHAT THE DEAD THINK – “DOMINION”

No One Knows What The Dead Think — the new band featuring 2/3 of the sorely-missed Discordance Axis — have shared another scorcher from their anticipated debut album. Listen at Lambgoat.

MONOLORD – “THE LAST LEAF”

Monolord have unleashed another helping of fuzzed-out, permastoned Sabbath worship with “The Last Leaf,” the second single off their upcoming Relapse debut No Comfort.

CANNABIS CORPSE – “CYLINDERS OF MADNESS”

Self-proclaimed “marijuana death metal” band Cannabis Corpse are releasing their new album Nug So Vile (a play on Cryptopsy’s 1996 classic None So Vile) on November 1 via Season of Mist, and first single “Cylinders of Madness” comes with an absurd, trippy video featuring animated nudity, bong rips, and murder. They’re just drawings, but still, maybe don’t watch it at work.

KAYO DOT – “TURBINE, HOOK, AND HAUL”

The constantly-evolving Kayo Dot have shared another song off their upcoming album Blasphemy, and you can read more about it here.

COFFINS – “TERMINATE BY OWN PROPHECY”

Japanese death metallers Coffins have shared another song off their upcoming album Beyond The Circular Demise (due 9/20 via Relapse), and while Coffins often get pegged with the “death-doom” subgenre, this song rolls.

DEATH VALLEY HIGH & CHINO MORENO (DEFTONES) – “CAVITY – FIRST COMMUNION” (CHRISTIAN DEATH COVER)

Death Valley High have shared this Christian Death cover featuring Deftones frontman Chino Moreno off their upcoming guest-filled EP, and you can read much more about it here.

THE NUMBER TWELVE LOOKS LIKE YOU – “RAISED AND ERASED”

The Number Twelve Looks Like You have shared a second single off their first album in a decade, and it’s more proof that they are not any less crazy and unpredictable than they were during their initial run. The song drastically changes genre like every thirty seconds… it’s pretty wild stuff.

GATECREEPER – “SOCIAL DECAY”

Not only Gatecreeper have an anticipated new album on the way, they’ve now shared a non-album track for the Decibel Flexi Series along with a new tour announcement.

CLOUD RAT – “WONDER”

Experimental grinders Cloud Rat are back with a new song off their upcoming album Pollinator; read more here.

TAKAFUMI MATSUBARA (ex-GRIDLINK) – “STUTTERED ROPE” (ft. DYLAN WALKER of FULL OF HELL)

Former Gridlink guitarist Takafumi Matsubara is releasing a guest-filled solo album, and lead single “Stuttered Rope” features Full of Hell vocalist Dylan Walker. You can read more about the project and see the full list of guests here.

PETBRICK – “RADIATION FACIAL” (ft. DYLAN WALKER OF FULL OF HELL)

PETBRICK is the new industrial noise band featuring former Sepultura drummer Igor Cavalera, and not only are they great to begin with, this new song is even more exciting because it features Full of Hell’s Dylan Walker. Their debut album I comes out October 25 via Closed Casket Activities.

MARIJANNAH – “BLOODSUCKER”

Marijannah share members with Wormrot, The Caulfield Cult, and Abolition A.D., and as you probably guessed from their band name, they make stoner rock/metal. They’re gearing up to release a new album in December, and you can hear the fuzzed-out new single “Bloodsucker” now.

LYNDA KAY & LEMMY – “THE MASK”

A long lost duet between the late Motorhead frontman Lemmy Kilmister and country singer Lynda Kay is finally out, and you can read more about it here.

INSOMNIUM – “VALEDICTION”

Finnish melodeath vets have shared the first single off their anticipated new album Heart Like A Grave, and you can read more about it here.

THE GREAT OLD ONES – “NYARLATHOTEP”

The Great Old Ones have shared a second single off their anticipated new album Cosmicism, and while the previous single was pummeling black metal, this one is slower, sludgier, and all around more evil.

BLACK MOUNTAIN – “JUNIOR’S EYES” (BLACK SABBATH COVER)

Black Mountain have covered a song by a fellow “Black” band and one who has definitely always been a big influence on them, Black Sabbath. It’s not the most obvious Sabbath song though: it’s “Junior’s Eyes” from 1978’s Never Say Die!, their last album with Ozzy (until 2013’s 13). “Deep end period Ozzy slow burn. Some Butler / Ward funk, Iommi wah flutters and floating synths,” says Black Mountain’s Stephen McBean. “Randomly rediscovered on a cruise through some red sand tropics. Nearly ten years on and still pulling riffs from the sky… never say die! You’re never too old to switch on and upwards!”

WARISH – “YOU’LL ABIDE”

Warish, the band featuring Tony Hawk’s son Riley, have shared another song off their upcoming debut album Down In Flames (due 9/13 via RidingEasy Records), and it’s a face-melting punk ripper that sounds like Nervous Breakdown-era Black Flag but more stoned and more evil.

BIG SCENIC NOWHERE (FU MANCHU, YAWNING MAN, KYUSS, etc) – “TOWARDS THE SUN”

Big Scenic Nowhere is the collaboration of two veteran California desert rock musicians, Gary Arce of Yawning Man and Bob Balch of Fu Manchu, and their upcoming debut EP features members of Kyuss, The Well, Monolord, and more. Hear “Towards the Sun” off that EP now, and read more about the project here.

DROWSE & LANE SHI OTAYONII (of ELIZABETH COLOUR WHEEL) – “SUDO BEAST”

Slowcore/shoegaze artist Drowse (aka Kyle Bates) and the insanely talented Elizabeth Colour Wheel singer Lane Shi Otayonii have teamed up for two new collaborations, “Sudo Beast” and “Open, Alone,” which will make up side A of an upcoming Drowse mini-LP, Second Self, due September 20 via The Flenser. (Side B features two new Drowse songs.) The first song to be released is the 11-and-a-half minute “Sudo Beast,” which is a gripping trek through darkness and noisy ambience that really earns its lengthy running time. More info and tour dates here.

SACRED REICH – AWAKENING (ALBUM STREAM)

Phoenix thrash vets Sacred Reich are back with their first album since the ’90s, and it sees them staying true to their ’80s thrash roots while sounding fresh too (thanks in part to production by Power Trip collaborator Arthur Rizk).

IN COLD BLOOD – LEGION OF ANGELS (ALBUM STREAM)

In Cold Blood emerged out of the same Cleveland metallic hardcore scene as Integrity and Ringworm (and shared members with both bands), and they’re now back with their first new album since their 1998 Victory Records debut Hell On Earth. As we said when recently talking about one of the singles, it sees In Cold Blood not just hearkening back to their classic sound but truly pushing forward, trying out new stuff, and coming out with some pretty great results.

ZONAL (GODFLESH, THE BUG) – “SYSTEM ERROR” (ft. MOOR MOTHER)

Zonal, the new collaborative proejct of Justin Broadrick (Godflesh) and Kevin Martin (The Bug) — who previously collaborated under the name Techno Animal —have announced their new album, which features avant-garde rapper Moor Mother on half of its songs. You can hear one of those now, and read more about the album here.
