24 New Metal Songs Out This Week

Witch Vomit

I’m really digging the new Axioma album that came out this week (which I reviewed for Notable Releases), and we also reviewed the new Yellow Eyes over at Invisible Oranges. For even more new albums out this week, browse IO’s Upcoming Metal Releases for coverage of the new Victims, Heilung, and more. This week also gave us new singles from Russian Circles, Torche, Melvins/Mr. Bungle offshoot Low Flying Hawks, Enforced, Korn, Lingua Ignota, Hesitation Wounds, Seer, Killswitch Engage, All Out War, Cro-Mags, the new thrash-inspired version of King Gizzard & the Lizard Wizard, and more.

RUSSIAN CIRCLES – “MILANO”

Post-metal greats Russian Circles’ new album Blood Year drops August 2nd via Sargent House, and the band have now shared second single “Milano.” As you’d expect from this band, the new song sounds gigantic, and that crisp engineering from Kurt Ballou is the perfect fit. (The crack of Dave Turncrantz’s snare is the gut-punch that this otherwise atmospheric song needs.)

TORCHE – “ADMISSION”

Torche’s anticipated new album Admission comes out July 12th via Relapse, and they’re now streaming the title track. It’s melodic and atmospheric and a little shoegazy and almost sounds like a cross between Hum and Sunny Day Real Estate, but still with that thick, trademark Torche sound. Read more about it here.

LOW FLYING HAWKS (mem MELVINS, MR. BUNGLE) – ANXIOUS GHOSTS (EP STREAM)

Low Flying Hawks is the collaborative project of Melvins/Redd Kross drummer Dale Crover and Mr. Bungle/Tomahawk bassist Trevor Dunn (who’s also worked with Melvins), and their new EP Anxious Ghosts came out this week. Across its five songs, they explore dark, quiet folk music as well as atmospheric post-metal, and the whole thing is pretty great.

ENFORCED – “BORN LOST”

Richmond thrashers Enforced are releasing At the Walls on July 12 via WAR Records. They recently shared a song featuring Dwid Hellion of Integrity, and now they’re back with another new single which should also appeal to fans of Integrity as well as fans of ’80s crossover or Enforced’s Richmond neighbors/recent tourmates Iron Reagan. Listen at Decibel.

KORN – “YOU’LL NEVER FIND ME”

Nu metal giants Korn announced a new album and released the lead single, and you can read more about it here.

LINGUA IGNOTA – “DO YOU DOUBT ME TRAITOR”

Lingua Ignota, aka Kristin Hayter, releases her sophomore album, Caligula, on July 19 via Profound Lore. New single “Do You Doubt Me Traitor” is an intense, slow-burning listen, over nine minutes of Kristin’s screams and wails over mournful, gothic music.

HESITATION WOUNDS (mem TOUCHE AMORE) – “PARAGONS OF VIRTUE”

Hardcore supergroup Hesitation Wounds — whose current lineup is Jeremy Bolm of Touche Amore, Stephen LaCour (ex-Trap Them), Neeraj Kane (The Hope Conspiracy), and new drummer Thomas Cantwell (Gouge Away, Axis) — have announced their sophomore album and released the lead single. Read more here.

KING GIZZARD & THE LIZARD WIZARD – “ORGAN FARMER”

As you may have heard, for their second album of 2019, Australia’s King Gizzard & the Wizard Lizard are going full-on thrash metal. Here’s a third punch in the face from the album.

SEER – “CHILDREN OF THE DYING LIGHT”

Vancouver black metal band Seer have shared a new song via the Adult Swim Singles series called “Children of the Dying Light.” It’s ten minutes of genre-defying black metal featuring synths by Wormwitch’s Robin Harris, and it was recorded by Tim Creviston (who produced the new Wormwitch album) and mixed/mastered by Colin Marston (of Gorguts, Krallice, Dysrhythmia, etc).

WITCH VOMIT – “DRIPPING TOMBS”

Portland, OR’s Witch Vomit are following 2017’s buzzed-about Poisoned Blood with a new album, Buried Deep In A Bottomless Grave, on August 30 via 20 Buck Spin. Lead single “Dripping Tombs” is a dose of raw, filthy old school-style death metal that stays true to OSDM’s punk aesthetic and thrash riffage.

HIGH COMMAND – “VISIONS FROM THE BLADE”

Worcester crossover thrashers High Command are releasing their debut LP Beyond The Wall Of Desolation on Southern Lord “in the coming months,” and the punishing lead single “Visions from the Blade” is a very promising taste.

ALL OUT WAR – “GEHENNA LIGHTS ETERNAL”

NY hardcore/metalcore vets All Out War, who are touring with Eyehategod soon, have shared another song from their upcoming album Crawl Among the Filth, and it’s a serious ass-whooper that proves these guys can still bring it all these years later.

WORMED – “CRYPTOUBIQUITY”

Spanish sci-fi tech-death unit Wormed are releasing the Metaportal EP on July 19th via Season of Mist, and second single “Cryptoubiquity” is out now, following “Remote Void.” Like the first single, it’s as furious and relentless as you’d expect from this long-running band.

NOMAD STONES – “TRUE ABILITY”

Nomad Stones share members with post-metal band Cave In but their music is more in the power pop-tinged punk realm. New single “True Ability,” which appears on their upcoming album Unriddled, is no exception. And it’s yet another ripper from this promising LP.

KILLSWITCH ENGAGE – “UNLEASHED”

Melodic metalcore vets Killswitch Engage are releasing their new album Atonement on August 16 via Metal Blade (their first for the label), and it features appearance by onetime KSE frontman Howard Jones and Testament’s Chuck Billy. The first single is the very Killswitch Engage-sounding “Unleashed.” As mentioned, Killswitch are touring with Clutch and Cro-Mags JM, including Asbury Park, Long Island, Port Chester, and more.

DEFLORE W/ JAZ COLEMAN (KILLING JOKE) – PARTY IN THE CHAOS (EP STREAM)

Killing Joke frontman Jaz Coleman has teamed with Italian group Deflore for a new EP. The band opened for KJ in Rome and Jaz was taken by their sound. “They were so powerful, such epic sounds, so cinematic,” Jaz tells Revolver. You can hear that cinematic vibe in these three songs which are orchestral but also very heavy.

PROPHETS OF RAGE – “MADE WITH HATE”

“Here the cameras click / the shots go boom / money talks / God walks out the room” – Chuck D sounds pissed off of “Made with Hate,” the new single from Prophets of Rage (the supergroup that also features Tom Morello, Tim Commerford, Brad Wilk, B-Real and DJ Lord). Says Chuck, “”AS WITH MANY songs ‘Made With Hate’ was formed out of a conversation amongst ourselves about the level of passion fuel it takes to create. Especially when attacking something of HATE. You must create the energy to hate ‘HATE’. To have PEACE you have to despise Hatred with a passion for Peace and attack it. You can’t have hate take over anything especially history, so you have to fuel yourself to attack in thought word and deed with equal passion.”

METH. – “HER WOMB LAYS STILL”

CHicago-area mathcore/noisecore band METH. are releasing their new album Mother of Red Light on August 23 via Prosthetic. It was mixed by Andy Nelson and mastered by Jack Shirley, and new single “Her Womb Lays Still” is a real face-melter. Bandleader Seb Alvarez says, “Womb was one of the first songs we finished and fully demoed out during the writing process. It started with a structural guitar part I wrote that more or less designated the flow of the first few sections of the song. Zack took what I started and brought it all to life into its current form. Womb demonstrates all the elements we establish with the LP. It carries ambiance, harshness, heaviness and just overall abrasiveness. It’s also a perfect demonstration of everyone’s touch to the writing process as well as a solid preview into the themes portrayed throughout the narrative of the record.”

ESSENCE OF DATUM – “PENDULUM”

Minsk instrumental metal duo Eseence of Datum (aka Dmitry Ramanouski on guitar and Pavel Vilchytsk of Relics Of Humanity on drums) have signed to Season of Mist for their third album
Spellcrying Machine
, which comes out on August 30 via their new label home. The first single is “Pendulum,” which offers up a heaping dose of classic-style riffage and fiery solos.

SANGUINE EAGLE – “BRIDE OF BLIZZARD”

New York black metal band Sanguine Eagle are releasing not one but two new albums this year, Shores of Avarice and Storm Mysticism, both due July 5 via Profound Lore. You can hear the 13-minute “Bride of Blizzard” off Storm Mysticism now.

HALSHUG – “KAEMPER IMOD”

Copenhagen punks Halshug are releasing their new album Drøm on July 19 via Southern Lord, and we wrote more about new single “Kӕmper Imod” here.

CRO-MAGS – “DON’T GIVE IN,” “DRAG YOU UNDER,” “NO ONE’S VICTIM”

Crossover thrash vets Cro-Mags (led by Harley Flanagan) returned with their first new songs in 19 years, and they’re not bad at all. Read more here.

Redbait Cages

MORE NEW-ISH STUFF

The music industry may have strict, weekly release schedules but music fandom is more complicated than that. Here are some more new-ish songs not from this week that we recommend.

REDBAIT – CAGES EP

St. Louis’ Redbait call themselves “proletarian crust,” and as you might expect from that description, they make highly political music that blurs the lines between metal and punk. They have two lead vocalists (Madeline and Rebecca; the other members just go by B, C, N, and W), and they bounce between screaming, shrieking, roaring, growling, shouting, and singing, while the rest of the band provides this six-song EP with a pummeling rhythm section and enough fiery riffage to fill a full-length. They can go from quiet to loud or slow to fast at the drop of a hat, and they sound focused the entire time.
