Lil Kim - Found You

24 New Songs Out Today

So many artists, so little time. Each week we review a handful of new albums (of all genres), round up even more new music that we’d call “indie,” and talk about what metal is coming out. We post music news, show recaps, track premieres, and more all day. That includes a lot of tour announcements, a list of tonight’s NYC shows, and NY shows that just went on sale. We publish a monthly playlist of some of our favorite tracks. Here’s a daily roundup with a bunch of interesting, newly released songs in one place…

DABABY – “IPHONE” (ft. NICKI MINAJ)

DaBaby’s new album Kirk is out today, and the whole thing is great (read our review), but one of the early standouts is “iPHONE.” DaBaby’s hook is undeniable, and Nicki blesses the song with a half-rapped, half-sung verse that proves she’s too good to actually retire.

H.E.R. – “SLIDE” (ft. YG)

The increasingly R&B/soul singer H.E.R. has tapped West Coast rap great YG for her new single “Slide,” a slick, bass-heavy, chilled-out dose of R&B that plays to both of their strengths.

SERAFINA STEER – THE MIND IS A TRAP (ALBUM STREAM)

Singer, songwriter and harpist Serafina Steer — who is part of Jarvis Cocker’s JARV IS... project — has just released a bewitching new solo electric suite of lo-fi, experimental and meditative pop for harp and synthesizers.

FRENCH MONTANA – “WRITING ON THE WALL” (ft. POST MALONE, CARDI B & RVSSIAN”

French Montana has tapped two of the biggest rappers in the world, Post Malone and Cardi B, for the new single off his upcoming album MONTANA. It comes with an expensive looking video that stars the rappers as giants towering over New York City’s skyscrapers, and the song sounds about as expensive as the video looks.

LIL’ KIM – “FOUND YOU” (ft. CITY GIRLS, O.T. GENASIS)

Lil’ Kim’s first album in 14 years has been delayed, but today she returned with a new single that may or may not appear on the LP, “Found You.” It features the fast-rising City Girls, who sound great next to The Notorious K.I.M.

THE GROWLERS – “PULP OF YOUTH”

“I see a lot of people around me dropping like flies, whether from bad relationships, drugs, or bands falling apart,” says The Growlers’ Brooks Nielsen of the band’s new single from the upcoming Natural Affair. “But my girl, the mother of my kids, she keeps me on the vine. I want to stay with her and stay right. We’re still very much in love, just like when we were younger, in the pulp of youth.

KEATON HENSON – “INITIUM”

British singer and songwriter Keaton Henson has been working on a classical album, Six Lethargies, over the past three years. Performed by the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra, the album’s six pieces focus on the relationship between music and emotion, as well as mental illness and trauma. About the first piece, “Initium,” and its video, Keaton says, “shot in one take, with nature somehow perfectly mirroring the changes in the music, the accompanying film is a visual representation of the unrelenting struggle to see past current traumas, and the desperate attempt to keep your head above water. It is designed to heighten the effects of the music, adding further subconscious responses to an already effecting experience. And in spite of being so seemingly simple, when watched fully can be profoundly moving, as a perfect expressionistic representation of a humans desperate attempts to stay afloat and breathe among the chaos.”

SLOTFACE – “SINK OR SWIM”

Norway’s Sløtface just shared new single “Sink or Swim,” which looks at climate change and plastic’s effects on that in our oceans. “It’s supposed to be an honest description of how I’m definitely not doing enough to stop it, and how it feels so massive and difficult, but at the same time it in part comes down to lots of small and every-day choices,” says singer Haley Shae. “It’s too warm for October” she sings, noting “It’s not politics, it’s sink or swim.”

KITO & EMPRESS OF – “WILD GIRL”

Empress Of has teamed up with electronic producer Kito (better known as half of duo Kito & Reija Lee) for this new track, which is an upbeat, addictive house banger. Empress Of’s vocals sound right at home over Kito’s bouncy production style, especially during the song’s infectious hook.

SNST (mem BRAID) – “IT’S HARD TO BE LOVED (BY YOU)”

SNST, the synthy project of Braid co-frontman (and The Firebird Band frontman) Chris Broach, is back with a new single. Chris produced, recorded, and mixed this song, but lead vocals are by Sonja Broach, who sang backup on SNST’s 2017 debut album Turn Out the Lights. The Braid connection might be a selling point, but this is a very catchy dose of indie synthpop that sounds more like lo-fi Robyn than anything from the Midwest emo scene.

RED DEATH – “FACE THE PAIN”

Red Death’s stint opening Cro-Mags’ Best Wishes 30th anniversary European tour begins tonight (9/27), and just in time for the trek, Red Death have announced their new album, Sickness Divine, due November 29 via Century Media (their first album for the label and third overall). It was produced by past collaborator Arthur Rizk (Power Trip, Sacred Reich, Creeping Death, etc), and the first single is “Face The Pain,” a rippin’ dose of crossover thrash revival that Cro-Mags fans should definitely dig on this upcoming tour. ALCEST – “SAPPHIRE”

Alcest’s anticipated new album Spiritual Instinct comes out October 25 via Nuclear Blast, and they’ve now shared a second single off of it. Following the very heavy “Protection,” new single “Sapphire” is more on the band’s shoegazy side, but in a way that pairs very well with the previous track.

MAYHEM – “OF WORMS AND RUINS”

Black metal legends Mayhem have unleashed the second single off their upcoming album Daemon (due October 25th via Century Media). It’s called “Of Worms and Ruins,” and it sounds as grotesque as you’d hope from that song title. Read more here.

MIDNIGHT – “REBIRTH BY BLASPHEMY”

Not only are Midnight gearing up for two killer North American tours — one with Obituary, Abbath, and Devil Master, and one with Electric Wizard — they’ve signed a worldwide deal with Metal Blade and released their first single for the label, “Rebirth By Blasphemy.” As you might expect from this band, it’s the kind of thrash/speed metal that manages to both be blackened and evil yet party friendly.

INSOMNIUM – “PALE MORNING STAR”

Finnish melodic death metallers Insomnium release Heart Like a Grave, their anticipated new album, next week, and they’ve shared “Pale Morning Star,” which guitarist Markus Vanhala calls “a miniature version of [40-minute track] ‘Winter’s Gate.'” Over nine minutes it covers plenty of sonic territory, pairing towering riffs with cinematic atmosphere.

THE GREAT OLD ONES – “OF DEMENTIA”

French black metallers The Great Old Ones have unveiled another single off their anticipated fourth LP Cosmicism, and it’s six minutes of very intense black metal, with a little thunderous sludge in the mix too.

NO VACATION – “DAYS”

Here’s another shimmering song from dreampop band No Vacation‘s upcoming Phasing EP which will be out October 18 via Topshelf.

THE JAPANESE HOUSE – “SOMETHING HAS TO CHANGE”

The Japanese House (aka Amber Bain) will release new EP, Something Has to Change, this fall via Dirty Hit. Here’s the dreamy first single and she’ll be on tour this fall as well.

WISH YOU WERE HERE – “CHRISTMAS CREEK”

Wish You Were Here is the Bon Iver-ish indie folk project of Stick To Your Guns frontman Jesse Barnett, and “Christmas Creek” is the second single o ff his upcoming debut album I’m Afraid of Everything. It’s gorgeous, intimate stuff.

SHANTIH SHANTIH – “RADIO DREAM”

Atlanta’s Shantih Shantih make twangy dreampop that owes more than a little to early’60s rock n’ roll. Their new album, Someone, Anyone? is out today and you can stream the whole thing, and watch the video for “Radio Dream” below.

BROKEN BELLS – “GOOD LUCK”

Broken Bells, the collaborative project of Danger Mouse and The Shins’ James Mercer, continue to drop new singles and their latest is “Good Luck,” which you can read more about here.

TEAM DRESCH – “BASKET”

“Basket” is Team Dresch’s second new song in 19 years, and you can read more about it here.

POHGOH – “REPEAT EXCHANGES” / CAITHLIN DE MARRAIS – “GOOD LUCK COME BACK”

Pohgoh and Rainer Maria’s Caithlin De Marrais just toured Japan together and released a limited (to 100) split 7″ that was only available at the merch tables in Japan and sold out before the tour ended. The 7″ isn’t getting a physical release in the US, but the split is now available on streaming services. Read more about it here.

R.E.M. – “REVOLUTION”

If you dig the more rock direction of Monster, but wish the mid-’90s production was dialed back to Sebadoh levels, this demo version of “Revolution” pretty cool.
