24 New Songs Out Today

So many artists, so little time. Each week we review a handful of new albums (of all genres), round up even more new music that we’d call “indie,” and talk about what metal is coming out. We post music news, show recaps, track premieres, and more all day. That includes a lot of tour announcements, a list of tonight’s NYC shows, and NY shows that just went on sale. We publish a monthly playlist of some of our favorite tracks. Here’s a daily roundup with a bunch of interesting, newly released songs in one place…

LIGHTNING BOLT – “HUSKER DON’T”

Lightning Bolt have shared “Husker Don’t” off their anticipated new album Sonic Citadel, and in addition to being one of the most amazingly-titled songs on the album, it’s also one of the catchiest songs released so far. It’s a noise-punk ripper and has more of an underlying pop song than you usually expect from this band.

KELE OKEREKE – “BETWEEN ME AND MY MAKER”

Bloc Party frontman Kele Okereke has shared another single off his upcoming solo album 2042, which he says “[details] an hallucinatory stroll through the underworld where the hero comes into contact with the divine.” It’s nice dose of catchy, anthemic art rock.

THE CHEMICAL BROTHERS – “HEY BOY HEY GIRL” (2 REMIXES)

The Chemical Brothers are celebrating the 20th anniversary of their 1999 album Surrender with a a deluxe edition that comes with b-sides, remixes, a whole disc of the group’s “Secret Psychedelic Mixes,” and a DVD with videos and live performances.  They’ve shared the previously unreleased “Secret Psychedelic Mix” and a new KiNK remix of single “Hey Boy Hey Girl.”

TOY – “FUN CITY” (SOFT CELL COVER)

UK band TOY are back with Songs for Consumption, an album of covers that’s out November 15. The eight covers include songs by Charlotte Gainsbourg & Serge Gainsbourg, The Stooges, The Troggs, Nico, Amanda Lear, BJ Thomas, John Barry, and the first track they’ve shared is this cool, minimal take on Soft Cell’s “Fun City.”

MIKAL CRONIN – “I’VE GOT REASON”

“This song runs through a mess of confusing interactions in a world that gets stranger all the time,” says Mikal Cronin of his latest psych-pop single from his forthcoming Seeker. “Musically it’s got some Beatles and some Nirvana, with a bendy mellotron line that helps tie the worlds together.” Seeker‘s out October 25 via Merge.

TURNOVER – “PARTIES”

Dream posters Turnover have shared another song off their upcoming album Altogether, and it’s as hazy and nostalgic as the single artwork that you can get a glimpse of in that YouTube below.

BARRIE – “DRAG”

Brooklyn lite pop band Barrie will release the Happy To Be Here (Ext) EP on October 18 and you can get an early taste via this breezy, ethereal gem that is both soft an anthemic.

KONRADSEN – “DICE”

Oslo-based duo Konradsen (Jenny Marie Sabel and Eirik Vildgren) release their debut album on October 25 via Cascine and here’s a second song from the album — the spare, delicate “Dice” which features singer Jenny Marie Sabel’s warm voice as close to the mic as you can get. “We didn’t have much experience recording music, but we were really tuned into searching and discovering. This track became the foundation for Konradsen’s recordings, lyrically, sonically and thematically,” says Sabel. “‘Dice’ set the mood and direction for the rest of the record,” says Jenny. “We use a lot of sounds from Eirik’s bedroom. You can hear beer bottles being opened, the sound of cutlery, piano strings, and Eirik’s younger brother taking out of the dishwasher. Piano and voice are really the center of this song, with all the other sounds accompanying and accentuating them. It’s a sweet song, and a sad song. It’s the only love story on the record.”

AARON TURNER – “UNDERLYING NATURE OF HABITUAL DISHONESTY”

Sumac/Isis frontman Aaron Turner is releasing a new solo album, Repression’s Blossom, on November 15 via Ektro Records/Sige Records, and you can hear the noisy, droney “Underlying Nature Of Habitual Dishonesty” now.

CRIMINAL INSTINCT – “NMPF” & “VICTIM”

Atlanta hardcore crew Criminal Instinct are releasing their new album Terrible Things on November 8 via Closed Casket Activities, and right now they’re streaming two songs from it that whoop serious ass.

KING PRINCESS & MARK RONSON – “HAPPY TOGETHER” (THE TURTLES COVER)

King Princses and Mark Ronson already teamed up earlier this year for the very fun “Pieces of Us” off Ronson’s new album Late Night Feelings, and now they teamed up once again to cover The Turtles’ classic “Happy Together” for Tiffany & Co.’s ad for their new fragrance line, Tiffany & Love. It’s pretty faithful to the original, but it sounds great and the pair do a nice job of modernizing it up.

CARLY RAE JEPSEN – “DON’T SPEAK” (NO DOUBT COVER)

Speaking of straightforward covers of classic songs by modern pop singers, Carly Rae Jepsen did one of No Doubt’s “Don’t Speak” for a Spotify session, where she also did her own “Want You In My Room.” Carly might not change it up too much, but she handles the song well.

JOYERO – “EVACUATE” / GAUCHE – “BODY COUNT”

Joyero, aka Andy Stack from Wye Oak, has a new split-7″ with fellow Merge act Gauche. His song, a dark synthpop number titled “Evacuate,” was born of a real life crisis. “This song was written during a state of emergency,” says Stack. “A hurricane was passing over my new home of North Carolina. Everyone was gripped by fear and uncertainty, and normal life shut down for a few days. Some big limbs were broken and there was some cleaning up to do, but in the end, the storm passed and the sky cleared.” Gauche’s song, the poppy “Body Count,” is also about a hurricane. “The song was written in the wake of Hurricane Maria,” says Mary Jane Regalado. “Puerto Rico was left with no water or electricity for the following six months. It’s been two years, and we still have no idea how many people died in the aftermath.”

ARP – “VOICES”

ARP, aka Alexis Georgopoulos, will return with new album ENSEMBLE LIVE! which features full-band, live-in-studio versions of tracks from his 2018 album Zebra. Check out the lush “Voices” now.

SLEATER-KINNEY – “ANIMAL”

For those who were unsure about the sleek nature of The Center Won’t Hold, “Animal” has that classic Sleater-Kinney feel.

DANNY BROWN – “3 TEARZ” (ft. RUN THE JEWELS, prod. JPEGMAFIA)

Danny Brown‘s new album uknowhatimsayin¿ drops Friday (10/4) via Warp, and he just shared one of its most anticipated songs, the one featuring Run The Jewels (which was also produced by JPEGMAFIA). Read more here.

BIG THIEF – “FORGOTTEN EYES”

Big Thief‘s second album of 2019, Two Hands, comes out next week (10/11) via 4AD, and today they shared its second and final pre-release single, “Forgotten Eyes.” Read more about it here.

BAMBARA – “SERAFINA”

Brooklyn’s Bambara are back with new album Stray that will be out February 14 via Wharf Cat. (That’s just shy of two years after 2018’s terrific A Shadow on Everything.) The first single is “Serafina,” a smoldering, swaggering number that nods to Ennio Morricone and gothy postpunk but lets in a few rays of light.

OPETH – “CIRKELNS RIKTNING”

Opeth’s new album In Cauda Venenum came out last week and today they announced a tour and shared a new non-album song, “Cirkelns Riktning.” More info here.

SUNN O))) – “FROST (C)”

Sunn O))) have shared the 11-minute “Frost (C)” off their upcoming second album of 2019, Pyroclasts, and you can read more about it here.

WOUNDED TOUCH – “EXCISION”

Wounded Touch are a new-ish Michigan hardcore band with some familiar faces — members of Sunlight’s Bane, And Hell Followed With, and Steamroller — and they’re releasing their debut EP From Day 0 Forward on November 1 via the Smartpunk label.
