24 New Songs Out Today

Brittany Howard and Terry Crews
Brittany Howard and Terry Crews

So many artists, so little time. Each week we review a handful of new albums (of all genres), round up even more new music that we’d call “indie,” and talk about what metal is coming out. We post music news, show recaps, track premieres, and more all day. That includes a lot of tour announcements, a list of tonight’s NYC shows, and NY shows that just went on sale. We publish a monthly playlist of some of our favorite tracks. Here’s a daily roundup with a bunch of interesting, newly released songs in one place…

BRITTANY HOWARD – “STAY HIGH”

Alabama Shakes’ Brittany Howard has shared a second single off her debut solo album Jaime. This one shows off a slightly softer side compared to the previous single, and it comes with a video starring Terry Crews.

KILLSWITCH ENGAGE – “I AM BROKEN TOO”

Killswitch Engage have shared a second single off their upcoming album Atonement, due August 16 via Metal Blade. Frontman Jesse Leach says, “This song is very near and dear to my heart. I wanted the listener to feel the urgency, the heaviness of the topic as well as a possible connection. Many people suffer from mental illness in one form or another. I want nothing more than for people to feel like they are not alone in this struggle. There is always someone there to help, to listen, and to be there for you. Don’t lose hope and don’t let your brokenness consume you. Broken can be fixed, or at the very least, maintained. No one is alone in this fight.” The band is donating a portion of the proceeds for the song to Hope For The Day, a non-profit organization that focuses on suicide prevention. The band is also touring with Clutch and Cro-Mags JM, including Asbury Park, Long Island, Port Chester, and more.

Proper. (the project led by Erik Garlington) are back with a new single, “Bragging Rights,” which sees Erik duetting with Sonder Bombs singer Willow Hawks, and the two sound great together. The song also borrows some lyrics from Kanye’s debut album, and Erik explains, “That album came out right before I started high school, and the pressure to start making snap decisions that would impact the rest of my life began. I heard ‘Graduation Day’ and finally felt understood. It’s about knowing you might fail but taking the risk anyway, and seeing how stacked the odds are against people of color and women, but being too determined to turn back.”

FLORIST – “CELEBRATION”

Florist’s new album Emily Alone comes out July 26 via Double Double Whammy, and they’ve shared a new single, “Celebration,” which begins with a spoken word passage before segueing into contemplative indie folk. “‘Celebration’ is a love song for darkness and the peaceful end to all things,” songwriter Emily Sprague told The FADER. “A song in three movements: reality, fantasy, memory. In a lot of ways this song is the thesis to Emily Alone. Minimal arrangements – acoustic guitars, synthesizers, and voice accompanied by the ambient sounds of earth. Birds and water. The song begins with an experience of the now. It falls into imagining the way that things will always return to what they should be. It ends with a burial of negative forms and the acceptance of a beautiful new path towards growing from nothing.”
