So many artists, so little time. Each week we review a handful of new albums (of all genres), round up even more new music that we’d call “indie,” and talk about what metal is coming out. We post music news, show recaps, track premieres, and more all day. That includes a lot of tour announcements, a list of tonight’s NYC shows, and NY shows that just went on sale. We publish a monthly playlist of some of our favorite tracks. Here’s a daily roundup with a bunch of interesting, newly released songs in one place…

SIR – “HAIR DOWN” (ft. KENDRICK LAMAR)

R&B/soul singer SiR is releasing his new album Chasing Summer on August 30 via Top Dawg Entertainment/RCA, and he tapped his TDE labelmate Kendrick Lamar for its new single “Hair Down.” It’s a smooth, laid-back song, and Kendrick sounds as great as ever on it.

BROCKHAMPTON – “IF YOU PRAY RIGHT”

Brockhampton have shared a second single off their upcoming album GINGER, which is “coming soon.” The group’s art-rap rhymes are in fine form and delivered over a psychedelic, marching band-infused beat. The video stars a marching band too.

THE SCHIZOPHONICS – “BATTLE LINE”

Makers of high octane, soulful garage punk, San Diego’s The Schizophonics have toured with Rocket From the Crypt, backed El Vez and played shows with The Damned and The Hives. They’re set to release their second album, People in the Sky, which will be out October 31 via Pig Baby Records. Get an early taste with smokin’ stomper “Battle Line.”

JOHNNY MARR – “THE BRIGHT PARADE”

Indie guitar icon Johnny Marr is back with a new single, “The Bright Parade” featuring a searing lead. “Maybe I’ve been quite preoccupied with the cosmos over the last couple of years but it’s the perfect metaphor for the star system – whether that’s a rock star or a movie star or a reality TV star,” Marr tells DIY. “I think half my mind was still in the cosmos and the other half was around these vacuous modern day reality stars. ‘The Bright Parade’ puts the two together and puts it on top of a psychedelic backing track.”

CLOUD RAT – “WEBSPINNER”

Michigan grinders Cloud Rat are releasing their new album Pollinator on September 13, and lead single “Webspinner” is here now. While grindcore bands can often start to blur, Cloud Rat have a genuinely unique take on the genre and that’s very clear on this song.

CUPCAKKE – “WHOREGASM”

CupcakKe is one of the best new rappers around, and though she’s got a reputation for making raunchy music, she’s also a multi-faceted artist who does much more than that. This song, though, is very much that.

SHANNON LAY – “AUGUST”

Shannon Lay’s Sub Pop debut, August, will be out August 23 and she’s just shared the lovely, lightly psychedelic and string-laden title track. “I believe whoever you record with tends to affect the mood of music and Ty really brought this jovial sense that I hadn’t really explored yet.” “Once you get rolling with him, he just throws these ideas at the wall. And you’re like, ‘I would never have thought of that!’ I couldn’t have hoped for a better guide and energy to help create this record.”

MARIA USBECK – “OBSCURO OBITUARIO”

Maria Usbeck’s second solo album, Envejeciendo, is out next week and here’s a final early taste. Co-produced by Caroline Polachek, “Obscuro Obituario” is lush, tropical and, apparently, a little morbid. “I’ve always wondered if the fear of death increases as you get older and as you start discovering illnesses,” she explains of the track. “’Obscuro’ touches upon this fear and the idea of someone watching over you from the afterlife.”

MARIE DAVIDSON – “CHASING THE LIGHT” / “WORK IT” (SOULWAX REMIX) / “LARA” (DANIEL AVERY REMIX)

Essaie Pas member Marie Davidson’s Working Class Woman is up for the 2019 Polaris Music Prize but she’s not resting on those laurels, having just dropped new techno single “Chasing the Light.” It’s a trancey banger in its own right, but it also comes with a Soulwax remix of “Work It” and a Daniel Avery remix of “Lara” — the originals of which are both on Working Class Woman.

ACTIVE CHILD – “ALL EYES ON YOU”

Active Child’s last LP was 2015’s Mercy, and he returns with a new single, “All Eyes On You.” It’s sleek, stylized R&B accentuated with cascades of Patrick Grossi’s signature harp.

THE BEATLES – “SOMETHING” 2019 MIX/STUDIO DEMO/INSTRUMENTAL TAKE

The Beatles’ eleventh studio album, Abbey Road, is getting reissued for its 50th anniversary, with a new mix from the son of original producer George Martin, Giles Martin. The reissue also comes with 23 previously unreleased session recordings and demos, including these two alternate takes on “Something,” which you can also hear Giles’ new mix of.

NOTHING – “WE ARE REAL” (SILVER JEWS COVER)

American Water was my gateway to David Berman and Silver Jews,” says Nothing’s Dominic Palermo of this cover of Silver Jews’ American Water classic. “I obsessed over that album and anything else I could find with David’s name. I originally recorded this song in the winter of 2016 in my first NYC apartment, but after hearing of his passing last night I decided to finish.”

TOUCHE AMORE – “SUCKERFISH” (ANNIVERSARY EDITION)

Touche Amore’s 10th anniversary edition of their 2009 debut …To The Beat of a Dead Horse comes out tomorrow, and the band re-recorded the album because they “physically couldn’t remix and remaster the 2009 version due to all the files being lost when the hard drive containing them crashed.” You can hear the new version of “Suckerfish” now and read more about the project here.
