King Gizzard and The Lizard Wizard at Brooklyn Steel
King Gizzard and The Lizard Wizard at Brooklyn Steel in 2018 (more by P Squared)

So many artists, so little time. Each week we review five new albums (of all genres), round up even more new music that we’d call “indie,” and talk about what metal is coming out. We post music news, show recaps, track premieres, and more all day. That includes a lot of tour announcements, a list of tonight’s NYC shows, and NY shows that just went on sale. We publish a monthly playlist of some of our favorite tracks. Here’s a daily roundup with a bunch of interesting, newly released songs in one place…

KING GIZZARD & THE WIZARD LIZARD – “CYBOOGIE”

Having released five albums in 2017, King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard mostly took 2018 off, output-wise, but are now back with this fun, if silly, seven-minute synthy glam stomper. The video, directed by Jason Galea, pays homage to Brian De Palma’s 1974 cult favorite Phantom of the Paradise.

KAREN O – “BULLET WITH BUTTERFLY WINGS” (SMASHING PUMPKINS COVER)

While Karen O has a collaborative album with Danger Mouse on the way, here’s a cover of Smashing Pumpkins classic “Bullet With Butterfly Wings” that is another song she’s contributed to the upcoming Amazon Prime series adaptation of the 2011 action-thriller Hanna. It’s entirely different from the Pumpkins’ version, all dark and electronic.

SOCCER MOMMY – “BLOSSOM” (DEMO) & “BE SEEING YOU”

Soccer Mommy has shared a new demo version of “Blossom” from last year’s Clean, one of our favorite albums of the year, as well as “Be Seeing You,” a b-side from her “Last Girl” 7″. “‘Blossom’ was one of the first songs I wrote for Clean,” Sophie Allison says. “It was before I even realized Clean was going to exist. I was always happy with the demo – it got made in the basement of my dorm room when I was still in college. ‘Be Seeing You’ is an even older track. It was made as a single with the original recording of ‘Last Girl’ but it was never put on streaming. It’s an old favorite of mine so I’m happy to see it get released everywhere.”

BOB MOUND – “LOST FAITH”

“Dictators, terrorists and tech companies have created an apocalyptic surveillance state,” intones Bob Mould, set against an equally ominous overhead drone shot of an abandoned wasteland, in the opening of his video for “Lost Faith” from his upcoming Sunshine Rock. It’s a setup that has him escaping to Berlin. “Herr Mould…what are you running from?” an interviewer asks a paranoid Bob and guitar lines swell and the song begins. “Lost Faith” isn’t your typical Bob Mould punk/pop burner and this isn’t your average video either.

RODRIGO Y GABRIELA – “ECHOES” (PINK FLOYD COVER)

Mexican acoustic duo Rodrigo y Gabriela are set to release new album Mettavolution in April and have just shared a cover of Pink Floyd’s Meddle epic “Echoes.” Rob & Gab’s version is even longer than the original, taking up the entire second side of the LP. “We are big Pink Floyd fans,” say the duo. “That track, especially the live in Pompeii version means a lot to us, we even made a huge visual reference in our video for ‘Hanuman.’ Besides that, the lyrics are even more relevant now than they were 45 years ago, the search for knowledge about ourselves, it’s becoming a key element for survival these days, that’s what evolution is all about at the end of the day.”

LIL PEEP & ILOVEMAKONNEN – “I’VE BEEN WAITING” (ft. FALL OUT BOY)

Emo-rapper Lil Peep sadly passed away in 2017 at the young age of 21, but fortunately he left behind a wealth of unreleased music. This one features rapper iLoveMakonnen and emo band Fall Out Boy, two artists Peep himself says very much inspired his sound. “One of my favorite hip-hop artists is Makonnen. One of my favorite bands is Fall Out Boy. You put those two together and that’s Lil Peep,” he told XXL in 2017. In a press release for this new song, Makonnen said, “All the songs that Peep and I have worked on are special to me. I knew adding his heroes Fall Out Boy to ‘I’ve Been Waiting,’ would be a tribute to my friend and collaborator that I could feel proud of. When I called Pete [Wentz] he immediately said yes, and it came together very quickly. I’m really excited to share this with the fans.”

LIL PUMP – “RACKS ON RACKS”

Lil Pump says “racks” 48 times in this song, and the video looks like the Fyre Festival commercial meets a superhero action movie meets a cartoon acid trip. This takes “you can’t make fun of me because I’m already doing it to myself” to a new level.

BOUNDARIES – “MY BODY IN BLOOM”

Connecticut’s Boundaries are releasing the My Body In Bloom EP on February 22 via Unbeaten Records, and they’re now streaming the title track, a bone-crushing dose of early 2000s metalcore revival with machine-gun chugs for days. They’re also touring.

HVOB – “BLOOM”

Viennese electronic duo HVOB will release new album Rocco on March 15 via PIAS. It’s a concept record featuring “13 separate but dramatically-connected narratives about letting go, farewells and new beginnings.” First single is the dreamy “Bloom,” featuring a shuffling beat and the whispered vocals of Anna Müller. The video, directed by Marie Alice Wolfszahn, is equally compelling.

BARTEES STRANGE – “IN A CAB”

Bartees Strange has made music as the singer of the Brooklyn emo/post-hardcore band Stay Inside and as a folky solo artist, but now he’s going in a very different musical direction for his new solo single “In A Cab.” It’s a very appealing dose of TV on the Radio-inspired art rock with some fiery jazz sax in the background. If he’s got more stuff like this on the way, we can’t wait to hear it.

FIELD MEDIC – “HENNA TATTOO”

LA bedroom folk artist Field Medic (aka Kevin Patrick) is releasing his new album fade into the dawn on April 19 via Run For Cover and he shared the lead single, “henna tattoo.” “It’s a song about being afraid to speak up for fear of what the truth might be,” he says. “So instead you remain in a state of unease & anxiety, because at least perpetual uncertainty isn’t as bad as the imagined worst case scenario.”

First up is Lucy’s Valentines Day pick, a cover of Edith Piaf’s “La Vie En Rose” in English and French that fits nicely alongside her original music.

SCOTT GILMORE – “ALL OUR STUFF”

Enigmatic artist Scott Gilmore will release his new album Two Roomed Motel on March 1 and he’s just shared new single “All Our Stuff” from it. Dipping a toe into ’70s lounge and exotica, it sounds utterly modern, otherworldly and quite lovely

No Win, the current musical project of producer, engineer and former FIDLAR drummer Danny Nogueiras, have a new album on the way — downey, which is out March 22 via Dangerbird. HAIKU HANDS – “DARE YOU NOT TO DANCE”

Australian collective Haiku Hands mix pop, electronica, and hip hop into high energy, party-ready bangers, which is an apt description for their new single, “Dare You Not to Dance,” where they taunt, “I dare you not to dance, fuckers.” They share it ahead of their upcoming North American tour, which includes dates with Chai and Lizzo, as well as SXSW.

KICKER – “MRS. ARNOLD”

UK meets East Bay punk supergroup Kicker (frontman Pete the Roadie + members of Operation Ivy, Neurosis, and Dystopia) are streaming a second song from their upcoming album Pure Drivel. “‘Mrs. Arnold’ is based on a true story about our singer Pete’s math teacher in the ’70s, at the primary school he attended in Wiltshire, England,” the band says. “She was a cruel and abusive teacher to the students, and Pete often found himself at the receiving end of her lashings or locked in a cupboard a number of times as punishment. A few years later she went to prison for axe murdering the wife and child of a fellow teacher she was having an affair with. More info on the tale can be found Decibel.
