25 New Songs Out Today

So many artists, so little time. Each week we review five new albums (of all genres), round up even more new music that we’d call “indie,” and talk about what metal is coming out. We post music news, show recaps, track premieres, and more all day. That includes a lot of tour announcements, a list of tonight’s NYC shows, and NY shows that just went on sale. We publish a monthly playlist of some of our favorite tracks. Here’s a daily roundup with a bunch of interesting, newly released songs in one place…

CARDI B – “MONEY”

Cardi B released her first new single since she put out her world-dominating debut album, and we wrote more about it here.

SPIRIT ADRIFT – “EYES WERE NOT ALIVE”

Modern doom greats Spirit Adrift are back with a new single for Decibel‘s Flexi Series, “Eyes Were Not Alive.” This one’s a little more NWOBHM than doom, but it’s still got Spirit Adrift’s usual knack for taking classic metal and making it sound fresh.

NAO – “IF YOU EVER” (ft. 6LACK)

NAO’s new album Saturn comes out this Friday (10/26) and she’s let another song loose from it. This one features rising Atlanta R&B star 6LACK and it’s a nice dose of atmospheric, shuffling R&B.

LOST UNDER HEAVEN – “POST MILLENNIAL TENSION”

Lost Under Heaven (aka former WU LYF frontman Ellery James Roberts and Ebony Hoorn) have shared another song off their upcoming sophomore album, Love Hates What You Become (due 1/18). It’s called “Post Millennial Tension,” and it sees Ellery and Ebony sharing vocal duties over a crackling, atmospheric backdrop and building to a pretty epic climax.

WAND – “HERE COME THE WARM JETS” (BRIAN ENO COVER)

Wand have been covering Brian Eno’s “Here Come the Warm Jets” at live shows for years and their take really sends it into the stratosphere. This version dates from 2015 but the band have shared it as they’re soon heading to Eno’s home country, for a UK tour starting November 8 in Bristol. It does give you a good idea of the mastery of their craft (go see them if you’re over there).

KHRUANGBIN – “CHRISTMASTIME IS HERE” (VINCE GUARALDI COVER)

Christmastime isn’t here, actually, and we’ve still got Halloween and Thanksgiving to get through first, but that doesn’t stop bands from putting out holiday records, like Khruangbin’s cover of Vince Guaraldi’s classic from A Charlie Brown Christmas. And we must admit their lightly funky version is actually pretty good, and will be out as a 7″ single on November 17. We’re just not ready yet.

RYLEY WALKER – “DIGGIN’ A DITCH” (DAVE MATTHEWS BAND COVER)

Ryley Walker has covered Dave Matthews Band’s The Lillywhite Sessions in full, an album that will be released November 16 via Dead Oceans. While Ryley is best known for his delicate fretwork, his take on “Diggin’ a Ditch” is decidedly rock.

TORO Y MOI – “FREELANCE”

Chaz Bundick will soon be back with a new Toro Y Moi album titled Outer Peace, which is out January 18 via Carpark. “This record is a response to how disposable culture has become and how it affects creativity,” Toro says. “While listening, you might pay attention or ignore — either way that’s ok, this is music for a creative mind.” The first single is the lightly funky “Freelance.”

MOUNTAIN MAN – “HOT KNIFE” (FIONA APPLE COVER), “SLOW BURN” (KACEY MUSGRAVES COVER), “THROUGH MY SAILS” (NEIL YOUNG COVER

Mountain Man, the trio of Sylvan Esso’s Amelia Meath, Molly Erin Sarle, and Alexandra Sauser-Monnig, recently released Magic Ship, their first album in eight years, and now they’ve shared three more new covers. Their entirely acapella take on Fiona Apple’s “Hot Knife” fits right beside the homegrown folk of their original material while retaining the jazzy touches of the original. “We wanted to learn this song as an exercise,” the band said, “and it just stuck as something we wanted to sing together all the time. It continues to be wonderfully challenging every time we try to sing it together.” Listen to that, along with their covers of Kacey Musgraves and Neil Young, on Aquarium Drunkard, who released the songs as part of their series of Lagniappe Sessions.

WHITE FENCE – “LORELEI”

Tim Presley will release new White Fence album on January 25. It’s intriguingly titled I Have to Feed Larry’s Hawk and we’ll have to wait till next year to see if that means something to the record, or if it’s just a phrase Tim thought was funny, but you can scan the baroquely psychedelic first single “Lorelei” for clues.

THE CLAYPOOL LENNON DELIRIUM – “BLOOD AND ROCKETS: MOVEMENT I, SAGA OF JACK PARSONS – MOVEMENT II, TOO THE MOON”

Primus’ Les Claypool and Sean Ono Lennon are back with a new album of psychedelic pop as The Claypool Lennon Delirium, titled South of Reality and out February 22 via ATO. If you wondered “Does This Sound Like The Beatles?” we’ll say “the apple doesn’t fall to far from the tree.” (Though maybe it’s a little more Klaatu.)  Also if you thought “I bet with a title like that, this is a long song,” you’d be right. That said, this is pretty good.

GLENN KOTCHE – “WILD SOUND”

Drummer, composer and Wilco member Glenn Kotche will release Sticks, Skins, Metal and Stone, a “compilation of past Kotche-penned compositions recorded and performed by NYU’s Percussion Ensemble,” this week via National Sawdust Tracks. “Sticks are the most basic tools of the percussionist,” says Kotche. “They are used for striking but are also shaped and arranged into tonal bars giving the percussion family rich melodic and harmonic components. Skins are what make drums drums. Metal in it’s varied forms – both tuned and untuned – provide a world of percussion color. And stone – the most basic of materials – struck together or shaped into pitched bars creating the most primordial, yet intriguing percussion sounds. These four elements are the catalyst for the music contained in this record.” If you’re still not sure what that will sound like, listen to the lovely “Wild Sounds.”

TELETHON – “MODERN ABRASIVE”

Ambitious, genre-defying pop punk band Telethon are following last year’s The Grand Spontanean with a new EP, Modern Abrasive, on November 9 via their own Halloween Records, and the title track is out now. They’ve collaborated with Jeff Rosenstock before (and their opening for his band with Chris Farren, Antarctigo Vespucci, in Chicago on 11/8) and their music is cut from a pretty cloth as Jeff’s. It’s fun stuff.

SUPER UNISON – “THE BIRTHDAY GIFT”

Super Unison’s Steve Albini-recorded, Don DeVore-produced sophomore LP Stella comes out this Friday (10/26) via Deathwish, and they’ve unleashed another song from it, “The Birthday Gift.” It’s a crusher that’s got one foot in the kind of noise rock Albini is usually associated with, and one in the kind of dark, punishing hardcore that singer Meghan O’Neil’s former band Punch used to make. It’s super heavy, and it’s much more of a head trip than your average hardcore song.

THE MENZINGERS – “THE FREAKS”

The Menzingers dropped a new song, along with a spooky video just in time for Halloween, which we wrote more about here.

THE GOOD, THE BAD & THE QUEEN – “MERRIE LAND”

The Good, The Bad & The Queen, Damon Albarn’s group with Paul Simonon (The Clash), Simon Tong (The Verve) and drummer/afrobeat great Tony Allen, are finally back with a follow-up to their great 2007 debut. It’s called Merrie Land and here’s the title track.

BRENDAN KELLY AND THE WANDERING BIRDS – “BLACK CAT BOY”

Lawrence Arms/Falcon co-frontman Brendan Kelly’s new Wandering Birds album comes out later this week, and we wrote more about second single “Black Cat Boy” here.

IN THE WOODS – “RESPECT MY SOLITUDE”

“Respect My Solitude” is a new track from In The Woods’ upcoming album Cease the Day (due 11/23) that our metal sister site Invisible Oranges premiered today, alongside an interview. IO’s Jon Rosenthal writes, “Cease the Day is psychedelic, blackened, gothic, and many, many more things. As it is with all In the Woods… albums, this new release is nebulous in identity, undulating between multiple states within a single song’s time. It is exciting and refreshing.” Read more here.

LYCIA – “AUTUMN INTO WINTER”

Darkwave vets Lycia have shared another song off their upcoming album In Flickers. “Autumn Into Winter” is another cold, wintry dose of atmosphere that fans of classic 4AD (or classic Lycia) should instantly dig. Listen here.

REPORT SUSPICIOUS ACTIVITY – “THE WILDERNESS”

Reunited post-hardcore supergroup Report Suspicious Activity (aka Vic Bondi of Articles of Faith/Alloy, J Robbins of Jawbox/Government Issue, and Kerosene 454/Oswego members Darren Zentek and Erik Denno) put out a ripping new single, which we wrote more about here.

WUME – “RAVEL”

Baltimore duo release their third album in November and you can check out the highly percussive single “Ravel” and read more about it HERE.

MIKE KROL – “LITTLE DRAMA”

Mike says “Little Drama” was “born out of a simple challenge: to make the simplest, most primitive ‘rock riff’ progression ever.” Read more HERE.

GRIVO – “C.A.”

Austin heavy shoegazers Grivo have been around for a few years and will release their debut LP in November. More HERE.
