Full of Hell Weeping Choir

26 New Metal Songs Out This Week

In addition to new album releases by Imprecation, Gomorrah, and more (which we covered in ‘Upcoming Metal Releases’ at Invisible Oranges), this week finally saw the first single released from Full of Hell’s anticipated new album, AND a Justin Broadrick remix of another, previously-unreleased song from that same Full of Hell album. We got the second Pig Destroyer single of 2019, and lead singles off the upcoming albums by Nocturnus AD, Aseethe, Enthroned, Call of the Void, Death Angel, and more. Not to mention more tastes of the upcoming Saint Vitus and Magic Circle LPs, and still more. Read on for all the metal (and metal adjacent and metal-leaning punk/hardcore) we posted on BV this week…

FULL OF HELL – “BURNING MYRRH”

Full of Hell have finally released the first single off Weeping Choir, and revealed that the album comes out May 17 via Relapse. “Burning Myrrh” is grindy death metal at its most purely evil. The attack is as brutal and whiplash-inducing as you’d expect from Full of Hell, and the melodies sound like they could score horror flicks.

FULL OF HELL – “THUNDERING HAMMERS” (JK BROADRICK REMIX)

Earlier this week, Full of Hell released the first single off their anticipated new album Weeping Choir, and now Godflesh’s Justin Broadrick has shared a remix of another song from that album which hasn’t been released yet, “Thundering Hammers.” It’s for a Decibel flex-disc single but you can stream it online now.

PIG DESTROYER – “CAMERAMAN”

Pig Destroyer have returned with their second single of 2019, and it sees them getting a little noisier than usual. Read more here.

NOCTURNUS AD – “PRECESSION OF THE EQUINOXES”

Back in 1999, Mike Browning of early death metal band Nocturnus (and also formerly of Morbid Angel) re-activated a version of his former band under the name Nocturnus A.D., which eventually went through lineup changes and became known as After Death. Then in 2013, Nocturnus A.D. returned with the same lineup as After Death (Browning plus Demian Heftel, Belial Koblak, Daniel Tucker [ex-Obituary], and Josh Holdre), and now they’re releasing the first-ever Nocturnus A.D. album, Paradox, on May 24 via Profound Lore. The first single is “Precession of the Equinoxes,” which shows Browning still has a knack for frantic, proggy, OG-style death metal.

ASEETHE – “NO REALM”

Experimental sludge trio Aseethe recorded their upcoming album Throes with Shane Hochstetler at Steve Albini’s Chicago studio Electrical Audio, and it comes out May 17 via Thrill Jockey. The first single is “No Realm,” which is relentlessly crushing and already getting our hopes for this album high. The band also has upcoming tour dates with Vile Creature and Primitive Man.

ENTHRONED – “SILENT REDEMPTION”

Belgian black metal vets Enthroned are releasing their first album in five years, Cold Black Suns, on June 7 via Season of Mist Lead single “Silent Redemption” is streaming now, and it’s exactly the kind of blackened fury you want from this band. They haven’t lost their touch one bit.

CALL OF THE VOID – “LIVING RUINS”

Colorado’s Call of the Void are releasing their new album Buried In Light on May 10 via Translation Loss, and they’ve shared the killer lead single “Living Ruins.” It finds the middle ground between punk and sludge, with a little blackened blasts thrown in there too, and it’s a real ripper.

SAINT VITUS – “BLOODSHED”

Doom legends Saint Vitus have unleashed a second single off their first album with original vocalist Scott Reagers in 24 years. “Bloodshed” sees Saint Vitus staying true to the fuzzed-out riffage they helped define decades ago, and this one comes with an awesomely messy guitar solo.

MAGIC CIRCLE – “GONE AGAIN”

Magic Circle’s “Gone Again” is trad-doom done right, and you can read more about it here.

DEATH ANGEL – “HUMANICIDE”

Bay Area thrash vets Death Angel are releasing their tenth album Humanicide on May 31 via Nuclear Blast, and the lead single/title track has a modern shine but otherwise sounds like it could’ve come straight out of their ’80s era. They haven’t lost their touch one bit. Death Angel will be on tour with Overkill this year, including a NYC show that also has Life of Agony on the bill.

VALE – “FINAL FLESH”

Oakland black metal quintet Vale (who share members with Ulthar, Void Omnia, and Abstracter) are releasing their debut album Burden of Sight on May 24 via The Flenser, and the furious opening track “Final Flesh” is streaming now. It starts out as a melodic, blasty black metal song, but eventually evolves into something filthier and sludgier. It’s cool stuff, and the crisp production from Greg Wilkinson (High On Fire, Necrot, etc) really brings out the best in this band.

GLASSING – “LOBE”

Austin’s GLASSING are releasing their sophomore album Spotted Horse on May 17 via Brutal Panda, and the first single is “Lobe,” which feels right at home on Brutal Panda’s roster of spastic, heavy rock. It finds the middle ground between post-hardcore and atmospheric black metal, and fans of either genre will probably dig this.

REGIONAL JUSTICE CENTER – “ASPIRATIONS” & WOUND MAN – “MAN SLAUGHTER”

Powerviolence bands Regional Justice Center and Wound Man are releasing a split in April and you can hear one song from each band now. Read more here.

SPOTLIGHTS – “THE PARTICLE NOISE”

Spotlights have shared another track off their upcoming album Love & Decay (due 4/26 via Ipecac), and it’s another very appealing mix of shoegaze and sludge metal. Guitarist/vocalist Mario Quintero told Kerrang: “‘The Particle Noise’ — is a multi dimensional song. Mainly being a love story about the beginning of the universe. A moment so intense that it encapsulates what it means to exist. This all being a metaphor for this persons infatuation with another, so strong it tears them to pieces and reforms them over and over.”

NYT LIV – “BLODET SKYGGER”

Danish punks NYT LIV are releasing their debut album in May, and we wrote more about its crushing new single “Blodet Skygger” here.

VAURA – “THE LIGHTLESS ONES”

Vaura — the Brooklyn collective featuring Josh Strawn (Azar Swan) on vocals, guitar and synthesizers, Kevin Hufnagel (Gorguts, Dysrhythmia) on guitar, Toby Driver (Kayo Dot) on bass, and Charlie Schmid (Tombs) on drums and electronics — have followed “The Ruins (Hymne)” with a second single off their upcoming album Sables, “The Lightless Ones.” While the band’s got a very metal pedigree, the new song is pure goth rock/post-punk, with Cure-ish atmospheres and melodies meeting early-U2-ish guitars. The new album drops 4/26 via Profound Lore.

BRUTUS – “DJANGO”

Brutus’ Nest is one of the most anticipated new albums at the moment in certain heavy music circles, and it finally comes out next week (3/29) via Sargent House. Ahead of its release, the band have shared another very promising single, “Django,” which shows off yet another side of their loud, melodic, and atmospheric sound.

LOW DOSE – “START OVER”

Low Dose (aka Legendary Divorce singer Itarya Rosenberg + all three members of the now-defunct Fight Amp) are releasing their self-titled debut LP next week (3/29) via Brutal Panda/Knife Hits, and they’ve shared another song from it, “Start Over.” It starts out catchy and grungy, but it turns into something darker, heavier, and more psychedelic. It’s cool stuff.

DISPARAGER – “PROMISE”

Disparager have shared another song off their upcoming Existential Dread (being self-released on May 3), following “Fall.” While “Fall” had some pretty big hooks, new single “Promise” shows a more all-around aggressive side of Disparager, before transitioning into a more atmospheric, Hum-like song. They’ve also got some upcoming shows.

TRYER – “ZEN”

Finnish punks Tryer tapped Kurt Ballou to mix their upcoming album Ei Kuole Koskaan, and new single “Zen” sounds like ’80s SoCal hardcore with Martyrdod-style leads. Read more about it here.

FLORIDA MAN – “BRAIN CELL”

Charleston, SC’s Florida Man are releasing their new album Tropical Depression on May 3 via Spartan Records, and lead single “Brain Cell” is streaming now. They recorded the album with Zac Thomas, who’s worked on several Kylesa albums, and they’ve got a similarly spastic sound to Static Tensions-era Kylesa, but with some Touch & Go-style post-hardcore in the mix too. They’ve also got upcoming tour dates, including Brooklyn’s Gold Sounds on June 16.

ZVI – “KETTLE DREAMS”

Zvi (aka Kayo Dot member Ron Varod) cites Anna Calvi, Peter Gabriel, and Glassjaw as inspirations for this mind-bending new song, which we wrote more about here.

EKULU – “HALF ALIVE” & “EMULATION”

NYC’s Ekulu, who just opened for Youth of Today in their shared hometown last night, have now followed their 2018 self-titled EP with a new two-song single on Triple B Records. As on last year’s EP, Ekulu blend thrashy metal riffs with a hardcore bark, but it doesn’t just sound like a lost relic of the crossover thrash era. Ekulu sound fresh today too, and there’s an ever so slightly modern touch to the production. Hear these songs live at the United Blood and Sound & Fury festivals.

KOOL KEITH – “UNCRUSHABLE” / DEAD CROSS – “CHURCH OF THE MOTHERFUCKERS” MASHUP

Kool Keith is releasing a 7″ on Justin Pearson’s Three One G label, and it features the previously-released Planet B remix of “Blast,” as well as this official mashup of Keith’s new single “Uncrushable” and “Church of the Motherfuckers” by metal supergroup Dead Cross (featuring Pearson, Faith No More’s Mike Patton, Slayer’s Dave Lombardo, and Retox’s Michael Crain). Whether or not you’re usually big on mashups, it’s hard to deny that these songs sound killer together. Listen at Rolling Stone.
