Andrew Bird - We Are Olympians EP
Andrew Bird’s We Are Olympians EP

So many artists, so little time. Each week we review a handful of new albums (of all genres), round up even more new music that we’d call “indie,” and talk about what metal is coming out. We post music news, show recaps, track premieres, and more all day. That includes a lot of tour announcements, a list of tonight’s NYC shows, and NY shows that just went on sale. We publish a monthly playlist of some of our favorite tracks. Here’s a daily roundup with a bunch of interesting, newly released songs in one place…

BEYONCE – “NILE” (ft. KENDRICK LAMAR)

Beyonce’s The Lion King: The Gift album is out now (read our review), and especially of note is this new team-up from Bey and Kendrick Lamar.

BEYONCE – “MOOD 4 EVA” (ft. JAY-Z & CHILDISH GAMBINO)

One more song from The Lion King: The Gift to highlight is this Jay-Z and Childish Gambino collab, which is the album’s most upbeat song and feels destined to become a fan favorite.

ADAM GREEN – “CHEATING ON A STRANGER” (FT. FLORENCE WELCH)

Adam Green is back with his 10th solo album, Engine Of Paradise, which will be out September 6 via Danger Mouse’s 30th Century Records. He’s just released this gorgeous, lush track which features ethereal backing vocals by Florence Welch. “The song is about finding yourself submerged in a wasteland, some kind of second-life where there are empty replacements for everything you knew,” says Adam. “You try to embrace this new world, but the more you squeeze it, the more the air comes out.”

ANDREW BIRD – WE ARE OLYMPIANS (EP STREAM)

Andrew Bird released My Finest Work Yet back in March, and he’s made one of its tracks, “Olympians,” the focus of a new EP. In addition to the original album version, We Are Olympians has an acoustic take, and the “Gothlympians” version, which features Madison Cunningham on vocals.

YBN NAHMIR – “FUCK IT UP” (ft. CITY GIRLS & TYGA)

Up and coming hooksmith YBN Nahmir taps the unstoppably rising City Girls for a new anthem that’s as instantly-satisfying and absurdly catchy as you’d expect. (It also features an entirely unnecessary Tyga verse.)

LIL DURK – “BOUGIE” (ft. MEEK MILL)

The Meek Mill renaissance continues with his great new contributions to Chicago rapper Lil Durk’s latest single, “Bougie.”

THE HIGHWOMEN – “REDESIGNING WOMEN”

The Highwomen, an all-star country supergroup featuring Brandi Carlile, Maren Morris, Amanda Shires and Natalie Hemby, fittingly made their live debut earlier this year at a Nashville, TN tribute to Loretta Lynn. Now they’ve announced their self-titled debut album, produced by the great Dave Cobb (who has worked with Amanda before, as well as her husband Jason Isbell, and Chris Stapleton, Sturgill Simpson, and Colter Wall, among others) and due out September 6. Its first single is the spirited “Redesigning Women,” which has a Elizabeth Olmstead-directed video featuring cameo appearances from Tanya Tucker and Wynonna Judd, among others. “Anyone can be a Highwoman,” Brandi says. “It’s about banding together, abandoning as much ego as humanly possible, holding one another up and amplifying other women every chance we get. Shoulder to shoulder. One push, one love.”

SKRILLEX – “FUJU OPENER” (ft. ALVIN RISK) & “MUMBAI POWER” (ft. BEAM)

Skrillex is back with two new songs, and both are highly energetic, highly melodic post-EDM bangers that are every bit as undeniable as you’d expect from Skrillex at this point.

WARISH – “HEALTER SKELTER”

Not only is Riley Hawk a pro skater like his dad Tony Hawk, he’s also the frontman of the scuzz-punk band Warish, and they’re pretty legit. They’re following their self-titled debut EP with their debut full-length, Down In Flames, on September 13 via RidingEasy Records. The first single is “Healter Skelter,” which references the same Manson Family scenario as the Beatles song, and it’s an evil, fuzzed-out ripper. Warish are also opening stoner metal vets Acid King’s upcoming tour, and both bands are playing Levitation.

THE DREW THOMSON FOUNDATION – “PHONE RING”

Single Mothers frontman Drew Thomson will release his self-titled debut album as The Drew Thomson Foundation on September 6 via Dine Alone, and along with the announcement, he shared new single “Phone Ring.” The Drew Thomson Foundation gives Drew a chance to explore music outside of Single Mothers’ punk realm, and this one kinda sounds like power pop-ish ’90s alt-rock. It’s cool, catchy stuff.

CONWAY – “BANG” (ft. EMINEM)

Conway is one third of the Griselda Records crew, who are on fire right now, and today he’s back with a new single featuring Eminem, whose Shady Records began some type of business relationship with Griselda a couple years ago. Over an ominous beat from Griselda’s in-house producer Daringer and UK producer Beat Butcha, Conway delivers threatening bars that should excite anyone who misses ’90s New York rap. Em comes in about a halfway through with a verse that references his old beefs with Ja Rule and Canibus, and tells you to compare him to Marilyn or Charles Manson, Nas, Biggie, Pac, Meek Mill, or Daz Dillinger, but not Iggy Azalea or Milli Vanilli.

GOLDEN DAWN ARKESTRA – “MAMA SE”

Austin’s Golden Dawn Arkestra release their new album Darkness Falls on the Edge of Time in October and they’ve just shared a second track from it. “Mama Se” is a terrifically catchy bit of afropop psych.

RUSSIAN BATHS – “TRACKS”

Brooklyn’s Russian Baths make dissonant, sometimes beautiful, usually loud indie rock like it’s 1989 and new single “Tracks” has all those qualities. Luke Koz, one of the band’s two singer-guitarists, says of the song’s lyrics, “If a friend takes something very personal, very private from you, do you forgive them? If you see someone’s worst self, how do you react? Would you choose yourself to be yourself? Is self respect something you feel because you’re good or does self respect make you good?”

ANNA WISE – “WHAT’S UP WITH YOU”

Singer and producer Anna Wise is back with this smooth, sultry bit of R&B that she says is “partly about people who emotionally manipulate others to get laid,” adding, “it’s also about sexual communication and having the courage to ask for what one wants. It’s also about modern dating and how technology fragments our attention. It’s also partly about the rush of dopamine we have when our crush texts us back.”

MICK TROUBLE – “SIMILAR KICKS”

Mick Trouble, the ’80s cult indie hero alter ego of My Teenage Stride’s Jed Smith, dropped his supposedly long-lost debut album today that’s filled to the brim with earworm melodies, killer basslines, magic harmonies and lyrics jam-packed with obscure British references sung in a chippy-chappy British accent. “Similar Kicks” falls somewhere between Motown and The Beatles.

DARREN HAYMAN – “100% OXYGEN (JOHN YOUNG)”

Just in time for the 50th anniversary of the Apollo 11 Moon Landing, former Hefner frontman Darren Hayman has given us a concept album about 12 Astronauts. “100% Oxygen,” which is about John Young (the ninth man to walk on the moon), is particularly lovely and really achieves liftoff.

THE FLAMING LIPS – “FEEDALOODUM BEEDLE DOT” (FEAT. MICK JONES)

The Flaming Lips’ new album, King’s Mouth: Music & Songs, was released as a vinyl Record Store Day exclusive back in April and finally hit streaming services today. The album, which features narration from Mick Jones of The Clash and Big Audio Dynamite, has a decided Soft Bulletin feel to it, no more so than on this song.

FROM INDIAN LAKES – “NO ONE ELSE”

From Indian Lakes appear to have a new project up their sleeves, and while info on that is still TBA, today they shared the new single “No One Else.” It’s a breezier dose of indie rock than you might expect from this band, and a promising taste of whatever they’ve been cooking up.

PETBRICK – “HORSE”

Petbrick is a new project from former Sepultura drummer Igor Cavalera and Big Lad’s Wayne Adams, and their debut album I is due October 25 via the trusty Closed Casket Activities label. It’s much more of an industrial/noise project than you might have expected from Igor, who’s spent the last decade making music with Cavalera Conspiracy, and it’s pretty cool stuff.
