28 New Songs Out Today

IDLES
IDLES

So many artists, so little time. Each week we review a handful of new albums (of all genres), round up even more new music that we’d call “indie,” and talk about what metal is coming out. We post music news, show recaps, track premieres, and more all day. That includes a lot of tour announcements, a list of tonight’s NYC shows, and NY shows that just went on sale. We publish a monthly playlist of some of our favorite tracks. Here’s a daily roundup with a bunch of interesting, newly released songs in one place…

IDLES – “I DREAM GUILLOTINE
Earlier this year, IDLES released a standalone single, “Mercedes Marxist,” which was originally intended for the band’s 2018 album Joy As an Act of Resistance before being left on the cutting room floor. Today, along with sharing that song’s official video , the band released another loose cut, “I Dream Guillotine,” whose thundering drums and shouted vocals sound just as furious as the band’s other recent work.

DEVENDRA BANHART – “MEMORIAL”

Devendra’s new album, Ma, is out in September and here’s another song from it — the intimate, somber “Memorial.” He says it’s about the “strangeness of feeling so numb, and yet so completely heart-broken-open.”

ARIANA GRANDE & SOCIAL HOUSE – “BOYFRIEND”
Ariana Grande has teamed up with duo Social House (who have produced some songs for Ariana and who release their own material too) for this new single, which is already a summery, bouncy tune on its own, but the track’s accompanying video is where the real fun happens. If you’ve ever wanted to see over-the-top action, lasers, and heart removals in an Ariana video, you’re now in luck.

THOM YORKE – NOT THE NEWS RMX (EP STREAM)

Last month, Radiohead frontman Thom Yorke released his very good third solo LP, ANIMA. Today, Thom has shared an EP of four “Not the News” remixes, with brand new interpretations from Mark Pritchard, Extendo, Clark, and Equiknoxx with Time Cow and Gavsborg.

DRAKE – “CARE PACKAGE” COMPILATION
For years, die-hard Drake fans have streamed many of his lesser-known, non-album tracks on Soundcloud, YouTube, or other inconvenient places, but today the rapper dropped Care Package, a compilation of many standalone tracks he’s released over the years, dating back to his Thank Me Later days. Awful album art aside, there’s tons of gems to be found on here.

TEYANA TAYLOR – “HWYI?” (ft. KING COMBS)

Teyana Taylor is back with her first single since last year’s K.T.S.E., “HWYI??” (aka “How You Want It?”), and it features King Combs, who is Diddy’s son. It sees her putting a modern update on ’90s R&B/soul, and it’s pretty cool stuff.

LITTLE SIMZ – “FEEL GOOD INC” (GORILLAZ COVER)

UK rapper Little Simz, whose GREY Area is still one of the year’s best rap albums, collaborated with Gorillaz on 2017’s “Garage Palace,” and now she and her band have covered their classic “Feel Good Inc” for triple j’s Like A Version. Like she sometimes does live, Simz played bass in addition to rapping and singing, and she nailed the song’s iconic groove, while also adding in some new lyrics of her own.

BIBIO – “SPRUCE TOPS”

Bibio has released “The Art of Living” off his great new album Ribbons as a single, and it comes with the previously-unreleased b-side “Spruce Tops.” This one’s a hypnotic dose of folk rock with a little Grateful Dead in the mix. Cool stuff.

DAVE EAST – “EVERYDAY (ft. GUNNA) & “WANNA BE A G” (ft. MAX B)

Harlem rapper Dave East is releasing his new album Survival this fall, and he’s previewing the album with two new songs today. The first one finds East as menacing as ever, mixing throwback New York rap with modern-day production, and the second one is more of an R&B slow jam.

RAPSODY – “IBTIHAJ”

Rapsody is following 2017’s great Laila’s Wisdom with her third album, Eve, on August 23 via Jamla. Rapsody tells Essence that the album is “my ode to the women in my life who have made me who I am, but at the same time I realize it’s bigger than me,” and it features songs named after Nina Simone, Oprah Winfrey, Aaliyah, Whoopi Goldberg, and Ibtihaj Muhammad. Ibtihaj Muhammad — who became the first Muslim American woman to wear a hijab while competing for the United States in the Olympics — is the inspiration behind the new single “Ibtihaj,” which samples GZA’s “Liquid Swords” and also features GZA, along with D’Angelo who sings lyrics from “Liquid Swords” on this track. It comes with a video directed by Jay Scorsese that pays homage to New York and Muslim women of color and features Roxanne Shanté and Mary J. Blige. You can read more here.

TY SEGALL – “LONE COWBOYS”

A wider arsenal of instrumentation — and a second drummer — adds serious oomph to First Taste, which might be Ty Segall’s best album yet. “Lone Cowboys” closes the album, seemingly on a mellow note but quickly builds quite a head of steam.

NEGATIVLAND – “DISCERNMENT”

Sound collage provocateurs Negativland are celebrating 40 years together and will release new album True False on October 25. You can check out “Discernment” from the LP which is a good introduction for the uninitiated as well, with an interview cut-up over sampled beats. “If our nervous systems have been conditioned to react to the language of broadcast media with instinctive skepticism,” say the band, “the skill we’ll need to survive social media might just be discernment.”

HUMEYSHA – NUSRAT ON THE BEACH (EP STREAM)

Humeysha, the Brooklyn-based, Hindi dream pop group led by Zain Alam, will release the Nursat on the Beach EP. You may have heard the title track already, here’s the whole thing.

THE WEDDING PRESENT – “PANAMA”

No this is not a cover of the Van Halen classic (leave that to The Bird & The Bee), but instead an original new song from UK indie rock stalwarts The Wedding Present which is the b-side to new single “Jump In, The Water’s Fine.” It does however work in that classic palindrome, “A Man. A Plan. A Canal. Panama.”

Bonnie ‘Prince’ Billy, Bryce Dessner of The National, and contemporary classical ensemble Eighth Blackbird are releasing When We Are Inhuman, a new collaborative album due out August 30 via 37d03d. Eighth Blackbird pianist Lisa Kaplan says this reimagined version of BPB’s “One With The Birds” is “is very different from the original.” She continues, “we used the birdcalls of all the different birds named in the song, and the extended piano intro was inspired by my friend Thomas Bartlett [Doveman] whom I had seen perform with the Gloaming just before making this arrangement.”

SHERYL CROW – “TELL ME WHEN IT’S OVER” FEAT. CHRIS STAPLETON

Sheryl Crow releases her collaboration-filled new album, Threads, on August 30. “After I moved to Nashville in 2006 to be nearer to my family,” she writes, “I got a lot of encouragement from the country music community to make a record for the country format. Once I decided to do it, I went to work writing with some of the best songwriters in Nashville, one of whom was Chris Stapleton. At the time, he was a well-known songwriter, but had not made his name as a solo artist yet. Together, we wrote a song called ‘Homesick’ for my Feels Like Home record, which ended up being one of my favorite tracks on it. I loved writing with Chris, and have written with him a few times since then. When it came time to put Threads together, I couldn’t imagine not asking Chris to write and record something with me for this album. It was a great couple of days in the studio and I just love this guy so much.”
