CocoRosie

So many artists, so little time. Each week we review a handful of new albums (of all genres), round up even more new music that we’d call “indie,” and talk about what metal is coming out. We post music news, show recaps, track premieres, and more all day. That includes a lot of tour announcements, a list of tonight’s NYC shows, and NY shows that just went on sale. We publish a monthly playlist of some of our favorite tracks. Here’s a daily roundup with a bunch of interesting, newly released songs in one place…

BRUCE SPRINGSTEEN – “I’LL STAND BY YOU”

The new movie Blinded by the Light is inspired by Bruce Springsteen (and Bruce performed at the afterparty for the premiere in Asbury Park earlier this week), and the soundtrack features Springsteen’s “I’ll Stand By You,” which was originally written for the Harry Potter films but it was rejected. It’s an orchestral ballad that certainly sounds well-suited for Hollywood.

JIDENNA – “SOU SOU” & “ZODI” (ft. MR EAZI)

Following “Tribe” and “Sufi Woman,” Jidenna shared two more songs off his upcoming album 85 To Africa. “Sou Sou” is a hip hop banger and “Zodi” sees him channelling Afro-fusion with help from Nigerian singer Mr. Eazi.

COCOROSIE – “LAMB & THE WOLF”

CocoRosie recently resurfaced in an unexpected place: on new Chance the Rapper track “Roo.” Now they’re shared a new song of their own, “Lamb & The Wolf,” their first in 2 years. It doesn’t stray far from CocoRosie’s typical sonic landscape, melding spoken word passages from Bianca Casady with angelic singing from Sierra.

Producer and DJ Cashmere Cat, who makes quality solo material in addition to producing for popular artists like Ariana Grande, Kanye West, and tons more, is releasing a new LP titled Princess Catgirl on September 20 via Mad Love/Interscope. He’s also dropped the album’s lead single, “EMOTIONS,” which is a cutesy, colorful banger with an even fluffier music video, featuring Margaret Qualley as the motion-captured Princess Catgirl character.

MIRANDA LAMBERT – “MESS WITH MY HEAD”

Miranda Lambert appears to be gearing up for a followup for her great 2016 double album The Weight of These Wings. She recently put out two new songs, and now she’s back with a third, which finds her very firmly rooted in country rock. “This one was a little different, but I love it. It’s got the rock & roll vibe that I crave,” she Rolling Stone.

Rising hardcore/screamo/etc band .gif from god are releasing their anticipated sophomore album approximation_of_a_human on September 27 via Prosthetic, and the ripping new single “possible futures in the minds of children” is out now. The band penned a screed about the powerful message behind the song that you can read at Revolver. And as Revolver (and BrooklynVegan) contributor Fred Pessaro points out, some major pg.99 vibes on this one.

LIL YACHTY & TEE GRIZZLEY – “ONCE AGAIN”

Another song is out from the upcoming Quality Control comp, this one from Lil Yachty and Tee Grizzley. Grizzley goes hard as ever on this, and the usually softer Yachty leaves his comfort zone to match Grizzley’s intensity.

MARY J BLIGE – “KNOW”

“When you hear the word ‘queen,’ you think of a woman getting everything she wants, but it’s not like that at all,” Mary J Blige says in the intro to her new ode to women, “Know.” “See, being a ruler means sacrifice. Most of the time, you get less than what you give. So every woman and mother in the world is a queen, because she sacrificed so much.” The song’s powerful message is matched by Mary J’s powerhouse pipes.

BLUEFACE – DIRT BAG EP

Blueface, the fast-riding rapper with the weird flow, is back with his first project of 2019, the Dirt Bag EP, out now on Cash Money. Guests include Offset, The Game, Mozzy, Lil Pump, and Rich The Kid, and it seems like these eight songs have plenty more of the pop appeal of “Thotiana” that made Blueface famous.

BAS – “JOLLOF RICE” (ft. EARTHGANG)

Dreamville rapper Bas is back with a new EP, Spilled Milk 1. It features his great recent JID collab “Fried Rice,” as well as three other songs, and the best one is opener “Jollof Rice,” which features another great Dreamville act, EarthGang.

JASON LYTLE – “DON’T WANNA BE THERE FOR ALL THAT STUFF”

Grandaddy frontman Jason Lytle is releasing a new solo LP titled Arthur King Presents Jason Lytle: NYLONANDJUNO, whose title is somewhat self-explanatory: it’s the latest in an ongoing series of albums from LA collective Arthur King, and features Lytle performing solely with a nylon guitar and Juno synthesizer. This newest track features Lytle’s brand of melancholy heard on many Grandaddy tracks, but through an atmospheric, barren lens.

PHANTOGRAM – “MISTER IMPOSSIBLE”

While Phantogram haven’t dropped a proper album since 2016’s Three, the duo recently returned with a single “Into Happiness” earlier this summer, and have just shared this newer track today, which makes the possibility of a new LP seem even more likely. The song’s hard-knocking rhythms and distorted synths aren’t unfamiliar territory for the band, but it’s still a very memorable cut nonetheless.

MAN MAN – “BEACHED” b/w “WITCH”

Man Man haven’t released an album since 2013’s On Oni Pond, but the band returned earlier this year with with two-song vinyl single for the Sub Pop Singles Club, and now they were given a digital release. While the band flexes their pop songwriting muscle on the psychedelic “Beached,” things take a more experimental turn on “Witch,” with frontman Honus Honus playing up his vocal theatrics.

MONSTER RALLY – “SISTER OWLS”

Cleveland-based musician, producer and crate-digger Ted Feighan has been making breezy, groovy, tropicalia as Monster Rally for most of this decade, sampling forgotten exotica, easy listening and jazz records and turning them into something new. “Sister Owls,” from Monster Rally’s forthcoming Adventures on the Floating Island, takes jazzy, smoky piano and horn blasts and layers them with a live rhythm section. It’s like ’90s hip hop meeting the ’90s lounge resurgence on a very secluded, very beautiful beach. Serve with an umbrella and, voila:

DESERT SHARKS – “SORCERESS”

Brooklyn garage punks Desert Sharks have been around since 2012 but are just now getting around to putting out their debut album, Baby’s Gold Death Stadium, which is out September 27 via Substitute Scene Records.
