28 New Songs Out Today

So many artists, so little time. Each week we review five new albums (of all genres), round up even more new music that we’d call “indie,” and talk about what metal is coming out. We post music news, show recaps, track premieres, and more all day. That includes a lot of tour announcements, a list of tonight’s NYC shows, and NY shows that just went on sale. We publish a monthly playlist of some of our favorite tracks. Here’s a daily roundup with a bunch of interesting, newly released songs in one place…

DEERHUNTER – “PLAINS”

Deerhunter’s new, Cate Le Bon-produced album, Why Hasn’t Everything Already Disappeared?, is out next week and here’s another early look. “Plains” is the penultimate song on the record, and one of the poppiest, with muted rhythm guitar giving things a tropical vibe.

LA DISPUTE – “FOOTSTEPS AT THE POND”

La Dispute have shared the second single off their anticipated fourth album Panorama (due 3/22 via Epitaph). “Footsteps at the Pond” starts out a little more driving and aggressive than “Rose Quartz” / “Fulton Street I,” but it takes all kinds of unexpected twists and turns. It’s as musically adventurous and lyrically passionate as you’d expect from La Dispute, and more proof that they keep moving forward.

MERCURY REV & NORAH JONES – “OKOLONA RIVER BOTTOM BAND” (BOBBIE GENTRY COVER)

Mercury Rev’s reimagined version of Bobbie Gentry’s The Delta Sweete, featuring an amazing cast of guest vocalists, is out February 8 and they’ve just shared the lead track which features Norah Jones. Where the original was bluesy and minimal, punctuated by funky horns, Mercury Rev make this all about atmosphere, with sumptuous strings and Norah’s smoky voice.

INTEGRITY – “ALL DEATH IS MINE”

Just ahead of this weekend’s Baltimore shows, metallic hardcore legends Integrity have dropped a new song as part of the Adult Swim Singles Series. It’s still evil, brutal hardcore, but there’s a little more triumphant NWOBHM influence in this one than Integrity tend to be known for. It’s awesome.

NATALIE PRASS – “WILD HORSES” (PREFAB SPROUT COVER)

Natalie Prass, who released The Future and the Past last year, has just covered Prefab Sprout’s “Wild Horses” for the Amazon Originals singles series. The original, from 1990’s Jordan the Comeback, was ahead of its time, sounding very much like modern glitchy R&B, and Natalie’s version fleshes things out, arrangement-wise. You can check that out, along with video of her performing it in Seattle:

LANA DEL REY – “HOPE IS A DANGEROUS THING FOR A WOMAN TO HAVE – BUT I HAVE IT”

We wrote more about the latest taste of Norman Fucking Rockwell here.

PEDRO THE LION – “QUIETEST FRIEND”

Pedro the Lion’s first album in 15 years comes out next week, and they’ve shared this third single from it, which we wrote more about here.

LOST UNDER HEAVEN – “COME”

Lost Under Heaven (aka LUH, ex-WU LYF) are releasing their sophomore album Love Hates What What You Become on Mute next week and they’ve unleashed one more single from it (along with a VR video), “COME.” It’s some of the most in-your-face industrial/synth type stuff Lost Under Heaven have ever done, and they pull it off super well.

VLTIMAS – “TOTAL DESTROY”

Vltimas, the new supergroup of original Morbid Angel frontman David Vincent, guitarist Rune “Blasphemer” Eriksen (ex-Mayhem), and drummer Flo Mounier (Cryptopsy), have shared a second single from their anticipated debut album Something Wicked Marches In (due March 29 via Season of Mist). It’s another bulldozing dose of blackened death metal, and it’s keeping our hopes high for this LP.

TRIBE OF PAZUZU – “INDOCTRINATED INTO ENSLAVEMENT”

Speaking of Cryptopsy’s Flo Mounier, he’s also in the new supergroup Tribe of Pazuzu with vocalist Nick Sagias (ex-Pestilence, Soulstorm) and guitarists John McEntee (Incantation) and Randy Harris (ex-Macifecation). Their debut EP Heretical Uprising drops February 8 and the grindy 30-second “Indoctrinated Into Enslavement” teaser is out now.

PRIESTS – “THE SEDUCTION OF KANSAS”

Priests announced their new album The Seduction of Kansas and shared the title track, which we wrote more about here.

BOOGIE – “SILENT RIDE”

Compton rapper Boogie signed to Eminem’s Shady Records back in 2017, and he’s now finally releasing his first album for the label, Everything’s For Sale, on January 25. He announced the album along with the release of new single “Silent Ride,” a chilled-out, melodic song that’s pretty promising.

FUTURE – “JUMPIN ON A JET”

After releasing “Crushed Up” and saying he had a new album coming on January 18, Future now revealed the title (The WIZRD) and released another single, the auto-tune workout “Jumpin on a Jet.”

UNKLE – “AR.MOUR” (FEAT. ELLIOTT POWER & MIINK)

James Lavelle has just announced a new UNKLE record, titled The Road: Part II / Lost Highway, which will be out March 29 and follows 2017’s The Road: Part I. “It’s the mid-part of a trilogy. The first record is like you’re leaving home; you’re naive and on a journey of discovery,” says Lavelle. “There are elements of my early days in there, as well as a bit of everything since. There’s an optimism and excitement to the record, as there was with me having to direct this project alone for the first time.” The first single is the very UNKLE-ish “Ar.Mour” which features Elliott Power and Miink.

XENO & OAKLANDER – “ANGÉLIQUE”

Analogue synthpop purists Xeno & Oaklander will soon be back with new album Hypnos, which will be out March 8 via DIAS. “‘Angélique’ is a song about wild flowers and how they connect us to the past beyond the beginning of our existence,” the band says of the LP’s first single. “Flowers and plants are fascinating ancient life forms that have patiently bloomed and pollinated since the beginning of time. Their names are the stuff of poetry, and almost always a woman’s name.”

YOU TELL ME (ALBUM STREAM)

You Tell Me, the duo of Peter Brewis (Field Music) and Sarah Hayes (Admiral Follow), release their eponymous debut LP on Friday but you can listen to the whole thing now. You can hear some of Field Music’s proggy pop and Admiral Follow’s baroque folk in their songs — it’s all lovely stuff but the best numbers are where they really come together to form something new.

EX HEX – “COSMIC CAVE”

Nearly five years since their debut, power trio Ex Hex (Mary Timony, Betsy Wright and Laura Harris) are finally back with LP#2, It’s Real. First single “Cosmic Coast” adds a little melancholic vibrato guitar to their glammy, punky sound — there’s a little Only Ones and Buzzcocks in there too. Learn more here.

SANHEDRIN – “MEDITATION (ALL MY GODS ARE GONE)”

Brooklyn classic metal/hard rock revivalists Sanhedrin (featuring current and former members of Black Anvil, Lost Goat and Amber Asylum) are releasing their new Colin Marston-recorded LP The Poisoner on February 22 via Cruz Del Sur Music, and they’re streaming lead single “Meditation (All My Gods Are Gone)” now. It’s as epic and catchy as you want this kinda stuff to be, and Erica Stoltz’s howl remains a true gem.

ED ASKEW – “LITTLE PIANO”

Psych-folk legend Ed Askew is still active and probably more prolific than ever. He just shared this new single “Little Piano,” and it’s one of those songs where the name says it all.

CANCER BATS – “INSIDE OUT”

Canadian hardcore maniacs Cancer Bats have dropped the new song “Inside Out,” which was recorded during the sessions for their 2018 album The Spark That Moves and will appear on a new split 7″ with Bleed From Within in honor of their UK January tour together. It may be an outtake but don’t sleep on this; it’s a serious ripper.

SARAH LOUISE – “RIME”

“Rime” is the second single to be released from Sarah Louise’s minimal, solo guitar album Nighttime Birds and Morning Stars (due 1/25 via Thrill Jockey), and like “Chitin Flight,” it’s a mesmerizing song that does a lot more with just guitar (and some digital manipulation) than you might expect.

CULT OF LUNA – “SERPENT CARESS” & “DESCENDED FROM LIGHT” (FROM FIRST 1999 DEMO)

Post-metal greats Cult of Luna are expected to release a new album this year, and 2019 also marks the 20th anniversary of their very first two-song demo. In honor of that, the band have shared those two songs online (along with a lengthy background story on the demo). If you’ve never heard these rare recordings, you may be impressed to hear just how fantastic Cult of Luna sounded from the get go, even on a home-recorded demo that they banged out in one day.

WESTKUST – “SWEBEACH”

Makthaverskan side project Westkust released their debut album, Last Forever, in 2015, and now they’re back with a new single, “Swebeach.” It’s the first off their upcoming self-titled sophomore album, due out on March 1, and it’s a swirling, noisey, shoegazey track punctuated by Julia Bjernelind ‘s cool, clear vocals.

SASAMI – “JEALOUSY”

SASAMI announced her debut album (due 3/8 via Domino) along with the release of third single “Jealousy,” which we wrote more about here.

THE LONG RYDERS – “GREENVILLE”

Paisley Underground vets The Long Ryders will release their first album in over 30 years in February. The route to making this involves Dr. Dre — read more about that here.

LENNY LASHLEY’S GANG OF ONE – “ALL ARE WELCOME”

“All Are Welcome” is the title track off Boston punk vet Lenny Lashley’s upcoming solo album, which we wrote more about here.

STELLA DONNELLY – “OLD MAN”

Stella Donnelly announced her debut album, Beware of the Dogs, and shared its first single “Old Man,” which we wrote more about here.
