So many artists, so little time. Each week we review a handful of new albums (of all genres), round up even more new music that we’d call “indie,” and talk about what metal is coming out. We post music news, show recaps, track premieres, and more all day. That includes a lot of tour announcements, a list of tonight’s NYC shows, and NY shows that just went on sale. We publish a monthly playlist of some of our favorite tracks. Here’s a daily roundup with a bunch of interesting, newly released songs in one place…

THE NEW PORNOGRAPHERS – “THE SURPRISE KNOCK”

The New Pornographers’ In The Morse Code Of Brake Lights is out in about a month and here’s another power-pop gem from it. “‘The Surprise Knock’ had a different feel when we first recorded it,” notes AC Newman. “As I was listening to it, I thought, ‘Why don’t we play this song like New Pornographers 2005?’ Then we just replayed it with that feel. I thought enough time has passed that I feel like I can play songs that sort of sound like a classic a sound and not feel like I’m repeating myself, because it’s been so long. That was definitely a part of it: just wanting to…I hate to say ‘get back,’ but just get more slightly raucous and sounding more like a band.”

MACSEAL – “ALWAYS HAZY”

Long Island’s Macseal are following some promising EPs with their debut full-length, Super Enthusiast, on November 8 via 6131 (Julien Baker, Touche Amore, etc). The first single is “Always Hazy,” which is an enjoyably breezy dose of emo-ish indie rock. Also catch Macseal on tour with Chris Farren, Free Throw, and Youth Fountain.

EXHORDER – “HALLOWED SOUND”

New Orleans thrash/groove vets Exhorder are gearing up to release their first album in 27 years, Mourn the Southern Skies, on September 20th via Nuclear Blast, and needless to say, it is very anticipated. Lead single “My Time” was genuinely great, and it nailed a balance between recalling Exhorder’s classics and embracing modern production, and the same is true of this just released second single “Hallowed Sound.”

LIZZO – “TRUTH HURTS” (REMIX ft. DABABY)

Lizzo’s “Truth Hurts” is one of the biggest songs of the year and DaBaby is one of the biggest new rappers of the year, and now those two things have come together for this fun new remix.

KEMBA – “THE FEELS” (ft. PORTUGAL. THE MAN)

Bronx rapper Kemba is one of the more consistently great — if underrated — rappers around, so it’s exciting news that his new album Gilda is expected soon. Its new single sees him teaming up with alt-pop greats Portugal. The Man, and their styles work together very well on this psychedelic new song.

SMINO – “REVEREND”

St. Louis rapper Smino follows last year’s very good Noir with a new single that proves he cannot be stopped and just gets better and better.

MIKE PATTON & JEAN-CLAUDE VANNIER – “BROWNING”

While everyone’s excited that Mr. Bungle are back, don’t forget Mike Patton has a new collaborative album with composer/orchestrator Jean-Claude Vannier. The latter used to work with Serge Gainsbourg and that’s quickly apparently on the smoky, sultry vibes of “Browning.” The album, Corpse Flower, is out September 13 via Ipecac Recordings.

CHARLI XCX – “MISS U”

Charli XCX is releasing the guest-filled Charli in September, but her new track “Miss U” doesn’t appear on the album. MOON DUO – “LOST HEADs”

Here’s another droney, trippy, poppy jam from Moon Duo’s forthcoming Stars Are the Light. Gurgling synths simmer throughout while guitars get about as funky as you’re every likely to hear from these two. Bliss out.

WARISH – “YOU’LL ABIDE”

Warish, the band featuring Tony Hawk’s son Riley, have shared another song off their upcoming debut album Down In Flames (due 9/13 via RidingEasy Records), and it’s a face-melting punk ripper that sounds like Nervous Breakdown-era Black Flag but more stoned and more evil.

THE NUMBER TWELVE LOOKS LIKE YOU – “RAISED AND ERASED”

The Number Twelve Looks Like You have shared a second single off their first album in a decade, and it’s more proof that they are not any less crazy and unpredictable than they were during their initial run. The song drastically changes genre like every thirty seconds… it’s pretty wild stuff.

HARMONY WOODS – “BEST LAID PLANS”

Sofia Verbilla’s second album as Harmony Woods, Make Yourself at Home, is due out October 4 via Skeletal Lightning. About new single “Best Laid Plans,” she says, “this song, and many of the songs from this (first) side of the record, have to do with throwing intuition aside and giving into infatuation. It can be easy to keep going back to pursuing a person who you know deep down isn’t good for you, but somehow causes you to have these intense, euphoric rushes. As we all have done at some point, the narrator makes an unhealthy choice in giving into this person’s hold on them.”

SUMMER WALKER – “PLAYING GAMES”

Atlanta R&B singer Summer Walker is back with a new London on da Track-produced single that pays homage to Destiny’s Child’s classic “Say My Name” but sounds totally modern.

ANXIOUS – NEVER BETTER (EP STREAM)

Connecticut’s Anxious sound like an amalgamation of Touche Amore-style hardcore, Torche-style heavy pop, and Taking Back Sunday-style emo, and if that sounds a little weird on paper, you should hear how naturally it all comes together on their very good new four-song EP Never Better.

GALLANT – “SLEEP ON IT”

R&B singer Gallant is releasing his new album Sweet Insomnia this fall, and today he returned with this tender new slow jam.

REDD KROSS – BEYOND THE DOOR (ALBUM STREAM)

Redd Kross are back with their first album in seven years, Beyond the Door, which finds them still cranking out the glammy, punky riff rock jams. Says the group’s Steven McDonald, “Given the choice, this is what we would hope lies Beyond The Door; sexy, mystical, rock’n’roll GOOD TIMES!” We couldn’t put it any better. Check out the whole album and the new video for the title track.

65DAYSOFSTATIC – “TRACKERPLATZ”

Sheffield-based experimental band 65daysofstatic release their new album replicr, 2019 via Superball Music on September 27. This ambient, moody track was a difficult birth. “At the last possible minute, on the cusp of us throwing the entire song into the memory hole, the song was saved by a 1998 Akai S2000 digital sampler. In the earliest days of 65, this sampler travelled with us in vans up and down the country and then around Europe. More recently it sat, lonely, in the corner of a rehearsal room, its circuits getting coated in dust and melancholy.”

WOLFRAM “AUTOMATIC” (FEAT. PEACHES)

SPINNING COIN – “NOT A DREAM”

Glasgow band Spinning Coin released Permo back in 2017, a record that followed in their hometown’s jangly indiepop tradition of The Pastels, Joseph K and Teenage Fanclub. They’re back with a new single, “Visions at the Stars,” which will be out August 30 via The Pastels’ Domino imprint, Geographic. This is the lovely, laid-back b-side.

CHARRETTE – “ONLY YOU”

You may remember Scotland’s WOMPS whose 2016 debut album was produced by Steve Albini. The band’s Ewan C. Grant now is making music as Charrette and it’s about as far from WOMPS’ Pixies/Nirvana-influenced indie rock as can be imagined. “Only You” is atmospheric, mellow pop, heavy on synths and a smoky blue-eyed-soul vibe.
