30 New Songs Out Today

sebadoh - act surprised album

So many artists, so little time. Each week we review five new albums (of all genres), round up even more new music that we’d call “indie,” and talk about what metal is coming out. We post music news, show recaps, track premieres, and more all day. That includes a lot of tour announcements, a list of tonight’s NYC shows, and NY shows that just went on sale. We publish a monthly playlist of some of our favorite tracks. Here’s a daily roundup with a bunch of interesting, newly released songs in one place…

SEBADOH – “STUNNED”

Our first taste of Sebadoh’s new album was a Lou Barlow song. Our second taste is “Stunned,” which comes from the group’s other songwriter, bassist Jason Lowenstein. “The incessant bombardment of the senses with media and advertising can lead to a kind of self-defensive paralysis,” said Jason Loewenstein of the track. “I am completely stunned at this point.” The song is a bombardment in the classic Sebadoh style — bang your head on the indie rock via its video:

INTERPOL – “THE WEEKEND”

Not wasting much time after last year’s Marauder, Interpol will release a new EP, titled A Fine Mess, that’ll be out via Matador on May 17. The five-song EP was made with producer Dave Fridmann (Flaming Lips, MGMT) at his Upstate New York studio. This single may not replace Loverboy’s “Working for the Weekend” as the Friday anthem of 9-to-5ers everywhere, but if you need a second song to get you in the spirit, it does pretty well.

CAGE THE ELEPHANT & BECK – “NIGHT RUNNING”

Beck and Cage the Elephant embark on tour together this summer (Spoon joins them for those dates, too). Ahead of that, they’ve teamed up for a new single, “Night Running,” which is also the latest single off Cage the Elephant’s upcoming album Social Cues.

SAD PLANETS (BLACK KEYS, GBV) – “YESTERDAY GIRLS”

Sad Planets, the duo of John Petkovic (Cobra Verde, Sweet Apple, Guided by Voices, Death of Samantha) and Patrick Carney (Black Keys), will release their debut album, Akron, Ohio, on April 19 and here’s the second single from the record. “Yesterday Girls” has a Motown vibe, in a dive-y garage rock kind of way, with a big chorus. The video is shot in an actual dive, and stars the Dead Boys’ Cheetah Chrome who gets into a bar fight with Patrick. As you do at dives.

MIST – “CAN’T STOP CLOCKS”

UK rapper MIST is following his 2018 Diamond in the Dirt EP (which features Jessie Ware. Mr. Eazi, and more) with the new single “Can’t Stop Clocks,” along with a video directed by DAPS (who also did the videos for Migos & Drake’s “Walk It Talk It” and City Girls & Cardi B’s “Twerk”). It’s got a ridiculously catchy hook, and here’s what MIST says about the song and video: “‘Can’t Stop Clocks’ came from the idea I had about the judge being able to lock locks but we can’t stop the clocks. For all my brothers locked down and what not. The idea of the video came from a program I watched as a child called Bernard’s Watch – I’ve been watching Daps for a minute and I knew he’d be able to bring the idea to life and he did!”

WEYES BLOOD – TITANIC RISING (ALBUM STREAM)

Weyes Blood’s anticipated new album (and first for Sub Pop), Titanic Rising, comes out next week and the whole thing is now streaming in full. As the singles hinted, it’s cut from the same ’70s folk rock cloth as its predecessor, but Weyes Blood sounds bigger and better than ever on this one. Stream it at NPR.

G-EAZY – “WEST COAST” (REMIX ft. BLUEFACE, YG, ALLBLACK)

G-Eazy and Blueface have dropped a new remix for their song “West Coast” featuring verses from two more West Coasters, YG and ALLBLACK. It comes with a black-and-white video directed by Daniel CZ and shot on the streets of the West Coast, featuring expensive cars and starring even more West Coasters like Ty Dolla $ign, E-40, P-Lo, and more.

SIGUR ROS – “FLUGUFRELSARINN” (LIVE)

Sigur Ros are celebrating the 20th anniversary of Ágætis byrjun with a deluxe box set reissue, and one of the discs it includes is Live at Íslenska Óperan 1999. You can hear “Flugufrelsarinn” from that live recording now.

HOLY FAWN – “DARK STONE”

Last year, Phoenix’s Holy Fawn released their debut album Death Spells on their friend’s small label Whelmed Records, and it quickly caught on, impressing everyone from members of Thrice (whose Riley Breckenridge said “This record came out of nowhere and absolutely knocked me on my ass. I knew nothing of it, had zero idea what to expect and literally had goosebumps for a majority of my first listen”) to members of Lamb of God (whose Randy Blythe said “The album is beautiful, heavy, & hypnotizing- listening from top to bottom will take you on a trance-inducing journey”). They’ve now signed to Triple Crown, who just gave the album a wider re-release, and along with that re-release comes with the video for album opener “Dark Stone.” We’ve heard a lot of bands mix post-metal and shoegaze in recent years, but Holy Fawn aren’t just bandwagon jumpers. They’ve got a pretty unique take on this kind of thing and really don’t sound like much else out there.

LOMA – “HALF SILENCES”

Loma, the project from Shearwater’s Jonathan Meiburg and Cross Record’s Emily Cross and Dan Duszinsky, are in Texas working on a follow-up to their 2018 self-titled debut album. They’ve shared a taste of what they’ve been working on with this new single and its accompanying video. “That’s not CGI, by the way,” Jonathan said of the video. “Dan and I held the fireworks while Emily danced and our friend Sam yelled ‘Lower! Higher! To the left!'”

AARON WEST & THE ROARING TWENTIES – “RUNNIN’ TOWARD THE LIGHT”

Aaron West & the Roaring Twenties (the side project of Wonder Years frontman Dan Campbell) are releasing new album Routine Maintenance on May 10 via Hopeless/Loneliest Place, and he’s now shared lead single “Runnin’ Toward the Light.” This one’s a little more Springsteenesque than Dan’s music usually gets, complete with an uplifting horn section, but he still gives it that unique Dan Campbell twist.

BARS OF GOLD – “ATLANTIC CITY”

Bear vs Shark offshoot Bars of Gold have shared a third single off their upcoming album SHELTERS (due 4/12 via Equal Vision). Guitarist Scotty Iulianelli told THE FADER that it’s both a nod to Bruce Springsteen and to Captain Beefheart’s song “Frownland.” “There’s […] this idea of having weird circular beats, that maybe trained musicians wouldn’t exactly play, but are rhythms nonetheless. It’s misinterpreted minimalism, with a bit of stank to swing a little disjointedly to.”

BIG BUSINESS – “TIME AND HEAT”

Big Business have shared another song off their anticipated new album The Beast You Are, and this one is a little different than the last few singles. “I’s a slow-burner. It’s nice to have a shift in the pacing of everything. It’s not a breakneck, blasty song,” drummer Coady Willis tells Ultimate Classic Rock. “We’ve been playing it live on the last tour. It’s really fun to play. I think we wanted to do a song that was a little more groove oriented, had some space, kind of a different pacing than most of our other songs. Jared came up with the riff for that one. I think he wrote it kind of around that Mellotron riff. I think it came out really awesome.”

LORD DYING – “FREED FROM THE PRESSURES OF TIME”

Lord Dying are gearing up to release their third album Mysterium Tremendum, and as band mastermind/vocalist/guitarist Erik Olson tells Decibel, the band set no limits for themselves this time around. “With Mysterium Tremendum we didn’t want to let any specific genre define the music. It’s a concept record and we wanted to explore sonically different outlets without any boundaries. Ultimately, the result is something more progressive than anything we’ve done before.” Lead single “Envy the End” saw Lord Dying softening their sludge roots and was more of a “heavy rock” song, and the new “Freed From the Pressures of Time” sees them diving head-first into prog. Both singles are very different, and right now it’s seeming like this will not be an album that’s easy to pigeonhole.

GEORGIA – “ABOUT WORK THE DANCEFLOOR”

UK producer, singer, songwriter and drummer, Georgia is back with this throbby dance jam. Georgia says it’s “written in response to the clubbing culture I experienced in cities whilst touring. Going out and getting that emotion or sensation from a collective energy in various spaces. It’s that stuff of old school disco, the thrill of the dance floor.”

THE DRUMS – BRUTALISM (ALBUM STREAM)

On The Drums’ new album Brutalism, Jonny Pierce worked with producer Chris Coady (Beach House, Future Islands), resulting in more of an electro/synthpop sound that we’ve heard before from The Drums. It’s out next week but you can listen to the whole thing over at NPR and stream a few tracks below.

COMBO CHIMBITA – “ESTO ES REAL (8100MG)”

Led by Carolina Oliveros, Brooklyn’s Combo Chimbita will release their new album Ahomale on May 2 and they’ve just released another dose of its tropical futurism, complete with spidery guitar, a killer groove and Oliveros’ powerful vocals.

NEIL HAMBURGER – “HOMEWARD BOUND” (SIMON & GARFUNKEL COVER)

Simon & Garfunkel’s “Homeward Bound” is a classic that cannot be improved upon and, with that in mind, here is America’s Funnyman, Neil Hamburger, who brings his own unique style (and truckstop tape spin) to the song. It’s best experienced in video form, as you’d expect. This is from Neil’s new album, Still Dwelling.

JAKUZI – “TOZ”

Turkish synthpop group Jakuzi are set to release their second album, Hata Payı, next week via City Slang. New single “Toz” incorporates a few different genres — ’80s goth, krautrock — into their moody sound. Fans of Cold Cave take note.

NGHTMRE & A$AP FERG – “REDLIGHT”

LA DJ/producer NGHTMRE has nabbed A$AP Ferg for his new single “Redlight.” The ominous, bass-heavy backdrop finds the middle ground between EDM and trap, and it should be no surprise that Ferg’s booming delivery sounds right at home over this.

VLTIMAS – SOMETHING WICKED MARCHES IN (ALBUM STREAM)

You can finally hear the anticipated debut album by blackened death metal supergroup Vltimas (Morbid Angel, Mayhem, Cryptopsy) in full. It’s basically as good as you’d hope from a band with a lineup like this. It should definitely appeal to fans of the members’ classic music, but it’s not at all a repeat of what they’ve already done before.
