30 New Songs Out Today

Your Old Droog Transportation

So many artists, so little time. Each week we review a handful of new albums (of all genres), round up even more new music that we’d call “indie,” and talk about what metal is coming out. We post music news, show recaps, track premieres, and more all day. That includes a lot of tour announcements, a list of tonight’s NYC shows, and NY shows that just went on sale. We publish a monthly playlist of some of our favorite tracks. Here’s a daily roundup with a bunch of interesting, newly released songs in one place…

YOUR OLD DROOG – TRANSPORTATION (ALBUM STREAM)

NYC rapper Your Old Droog is back with a second surprise album of 2019, and this one is a semi-concept album based on the NYC subway system. Droog still pretty much does one thing (hard-edged, throwback, ’90s style New York rap), but he does it really fucking good, and Transportation is no exception. It’s punchline after punchline and Droog sounds tough as nails throughout the whole thing.

KANYE WEST – “BROTHERS” (ft. CHARLIE WILSON)

The new trailer for BET’s Tales is out, and it features a new song by Kanye West, “Brothers,” featuring The Gap Band’s Charlie Wilson (who’s collaborated with Kanye before). As you’d probably expect from a song with Charlie Wilson, Kanye explores his soulful side on this one.

BURNA BOY – “ANYBODY”

Nigerian Afro-fusion artist Burna Boy follows up his collab EP with DJDS with the new single “Anybody,” a funky, lively song that’s a little heavier on the Afrobeat vibes than the EP with DJDS was.

ZACK FOX & KENNY BEATS – “JESUS IS THE ONE (I GOT DEPRESSION)”

Hip hop friendly comedian Zack Fox teams with hip hop producer of the moment Kenny Beats for this new track about mental illness that doubles as stand-up comedy and a pretty damn good rap song. It’s got so many good one-liners, and it manages to offer up genuinely good comedy about a genuinely serious topic.

MATTIEL – “FOOD FOR THOUGHT” & SATIS-FACTORY (ALBUM STREAM)

Atlanta singer-songwriter Mattiel Brown releases her second album, Satis-Factory, today which is out via ATO/Heavenly and is a attitude-filled dollup of southern-fried garage rock. “Some people become satisfied doing one thing for a very long time, and don’t have the impetus to pursue anything else,” Mattiel says of her new album. “But I’m happiest when I’m continually searching for that satisfaction even though I may never reach it. Because if I’ve totally reached it, I know I’m doing something wrong. It means I’ve become too comfortable.” Listen to the album and check out her brand new video for “Food for Thought.”

DAVID J & ROSE MCGOWAN – “THE AUTEUR”

David J, who spent much of the last year touring with former bandmate Peter Murphy for Bauhaus’ 40th anniversary, has a new solo album in the works and has shared this taster featuring actress Rose McGowan. “The original version of ‘The Auteur’ was released as part of an EP in 2002, an old song that tells a much older story but one which in light of the whole ‘#metoo movement now has an addendum,” says David. “The most vocal proponent of that righteous call for respect and culpability, Rose McGowan, makes a fitting and emotional appearance on this brand new version’s reprise. Rose told me that she related to the lyrics on a very personal level and because of this she is also considering recording her own version of the song.”

TOMB MOLD – “ACCELERATIVE PHENOMENAE”

Tomb Mold’s anticipated new album Planetary Clairvoyance comes out July 19 via 20 Buck Spin, and they’ve now shared another song from it, “Accelerative Phenomenae.” It’s an intense six and a half minutes that finds the middle ground between fretboard-racing death metal and punishing sludge, and guitarist Derrick Vella calls it “a vicious journey through the time tombs.” “It’s labyrinthian structure leaves you twisting and turning until the shrike has drained you of all your fluids,” he continues. “It’s a perfect representation of what we want to hear in a death metal song. It’s Tomb Mold, from start to finish.” Drummer/vocalist Max Klebanoff adds, “‘Accelerative Phenomenae’ is about the culminating event of sorrowful intimacies before your final meeting with death where the lines of self and other are blurred. Your senses are heightened during the final racing of pulses, your cumulative earthly doubts are cast aside to embrace an elegiac ultimate.”

THE MENZINGERS – “CEMETERY’S GARDEN” & “NO PENANCE”

For Record Store Day, Scranton/Philly punks The Menzingers dropped a new two-song single and now the single is out digitally too. “Cemetery’s Garden” is a ripper in their usual heartland punk style, while “No Penance” is a little grittier and grungier.

PJ HARVEY – THE VIRTUES SCORE (SOUNDTRACK STREAM)

As mentioned, PJ Harvey provided much of the score for director Shane Meadows’ four-part drama series The Virtues. We heard episode closing track “The Crowded Cell,” which features PJ’s unmistakable vocals, and now the rest of the soundtrack has been released, including a few more mostly-instrumental tracks from PJ.

TROUBLE – “SHE A WINNER” (ft. CITY GIRLS)

Atlanta rapper Trouble is gearing up to follow 2018’s Mike WiLL Made It-produced Edgewood, and while there’s no real word on a new album yet, he did just drop this banger of a new single featuring the currently unstoppable City Girls.

ZOMBIE APOCALYPSE – “BULLSHIT DESTROYER”

Shai Hulud-related crossover thrashers Zombie Apocalypse just dropped their first song in 15 years, “Bullshit Destroyer,” which will appear on their upcoming Life Without Pain Is A Fucking Fantasy EP, due August 9 via Innerstrength Records. It’s exactly the kind of relentless, whiplash-inducing song you’d expect from this band.

CLAUD – “WISH YOU WERE GAY”

The latest single from Brooklyn songwriter Claud Mintz isn’t, like its title might have you believe, a cover of the Billie Eilish track, but a poignant and heartfelt song of its own.

93PUNX (VIC MENSA) – “CAMP AMERICA”

93PUNX is Chicago rapper Vic Mensa’s punk/alt-rock/rap band, and following their Cranberries cover released earlier this week, they’ve now shared their debut original single, “Camp America.” A press release points out that the song is “based around ICE director Matthew Albence’s comments comparing their immigrant prisons (aka detention centers) to summer camps. The accompanying video, which portrays white kids reenacting real life detention center scenarios, is equally poignant and provocative in its scathing critique of the current administration’s family separation policy.”

JULIA SHAPIRO – A PERFECT VERSION (ALBUM STREAM)

Chastity Belt’s Julia Shapiro wrote the songs on her solo debut after a bad breakup and a canceled tour. She taught herself recording and played nearly everything on the album. “When the rest of my life felt out of control, I felt like this was my chance to be in control of everything.”

MADNONNA – MADAME X (ALBUM STREAM)

Madonna’s 14th album finds her dabbling in reggae and other uncharted territory and collaborating with Quavo, Maluma, Swae Lee, Anitta, her old friend Mirwais and more.

GALLANT – “SHARPEST EDGES”

R&B singer Gallant continues to drop singles ahead of his anticipated, still-TBA sophomore album, and the latest is “Sharpest Edges.” Gallant says, “There are two sides to every coin—a bunch of caskets buried underneath every vacation home. I had problems with depression for a long time because even though you get to choose your own outlook on life, it’s hard sometimes to ignore the bad shit, the mistakes you made and the things you could have done better. It’s easier to admit the world is full of sharp edges—and to make a goal to have as many close calls as you can.”

COMMON – “HER LOVE” (ft. DANIEL CAESAR & DWELE)

Common shouts out Nipsey Hussle, Cardi B, Meek Mill and more on his new track, which includes a previously unheard beat from J. Dilla. Like on his 1994 track “I Used to Love H.E.R.,” the “HER” in its title stands for “Hip-Hop in its Essence is Real.”

A BEACON SCHOOL – “CUT THRU”

A Beacon School reissued their 2018 debut, which was originally released only on cassette/digital, on vinyl today and it’s been expanded with three lovely new songs. “Cut Thru” is almost like Real Estate, if they were more experimental in their production and arrangements.
