31 New Songs Out Today

Torres

So many artists, so little time. Each week we review a handful of new albums (of all genres), round up even more new music that we’d call “indie,” and talk about what metal is coming out. We post music news, show recaps, track premieres, and more all day. That includes a lot of tour announcements, a list of tonight’s NYC shows, and NY shows that just went on sale. We publish a monthly playlist of some of our favorite tracks. Here’s a daily roundup with a bunch of interesting, newly released songs in one place…

LIGHTNING BOLT – “SPACEMAN”

Lightning Bolt follow last year’s Sonic Citadel with a new song for the Adult Swim Singles Program, and this one’s a real fucking rager.

A GIRL CALLED EDDY – “SOMEONE’S GONNA BREAK YOUR HEART”

Erin Moran will release Been Around, her second album as A Girl Called Eddy and first in 15 years(!), this Friday and she’s just shared one of its standout cuts as the new single. With chiming guitars and touches of castanets, “Someone’s Gonna Break Your Heart” soars like late-’70s power pop and is the kind of song that, in another era, could’ve been a big hit.

LA PRIEST – “WHAT MOVES”

LA Priest, aka former Late of the Pier frontman Sam Eastgate will release his second album, Gene, on April 24 via Domino. He made the record with producer Erol Alkan and the first single is the slinky, woozy “What Moves.” “This song asks ‘what moves…?’ 20 times,” notes Sam. “The answer is in the guitar solo!”

THE GARDEN – “CLENCH TO STAY AWAKE”

SoCal punk duo The Garden will release new album Kiss My Super Bowl Ring on March 13 via Epitaph. The record features guest appearances from Ariel Pink, Khalif Jones (aka Le1f) “even a snippet from Carrot Top.” Ok! The first single “Clench to Stay Awake” sets the snotty tone for what’s to come.

KHRUANGBIN & LEON BRIDGES – “C-SIDE”

Texas Sun, the collaborative EP from Khruangbin & Leon Bridges, is out Febraury 7 and they’ve just released a second single from it. “C-Side” is “about the pull of the unique Texas landscape” and is nicely mysterious, in a dubby and soulful kind of way.

P.E. (PILL/EATERS) – “SOFT DANCE”

Brooklyn duo Eaters teamed up with members of defunct band Pill to form P.E. and will release their debut album, Person, on March 20. They’ve just shared second single “Soft Dance,” which floats atop of pillowy saxophones, electronic percussion and a little drony noise. “I wrote the words to Soft Dance as a sort of farewell to a relationship,” says singer Veronica Torres. “It’s a celebration of letting go and feeling safe – keeping the soft and good memories, learning your lessons, knowing that this might not be the last heartache you ever feel, and acknowledging the human need for tenderness and connection.”

NNAMDÏ – “WASTED”

Fresh off releasing recent single “Price Went Up,” genre-defying artist NNAMDÏ (fka Nnamdi Ogbonnaya) has announced a new album, BRAT (due April 3 via his own Sooper Records), and released another new single, “WASTED.” This one kinda finds him in James Blake/Frank Ocean territory, but he really makes it his own.

TWIN PEAKS – “CAWFEE” & “ST. VULGAR”

It’s only been a few months since Twin Peaks released their last LP Lookout Low, but the band is already back with a new 7″ single, which features a pair of breezy, sugary indie rock tunes. Both songs are promoted with a pair of fun lyric videos featuring fellow Chicago musician James Swanberg (of The Lemons). Profits from the single go to Australian bushfire relief.

TORRES – “DRESSING AMERICA”

Torres’ anticipated fourth album Silver Tongue is out later this month, and she’s just dropped the stunning new single “Dressing America,” along with its vintage-style video, which has big yeehaw energy and probably isn’t safe for work.

MOANING – “EGO

Hazy post-punks Moaning are releasing their newest LP Uneasy Laughter on March 20 via Sub Pop, and the album’s lead single is the driving “Ego,” whose emphasis on synths show the band leaning further towards new wave territory.

CHRIS FARREN – “PHANTOM FRIEND”

As Chris Farren gears up to begin his tour with Retirement Party and Macseal tonight (1/15), he has followed last year’s Born Hot with a tender, part jangly, party synthy new single. “I’ve been listening to a lot of Destroyer and Belle & Sebastian, and I think that’s pretty clear in this one. Not like, ILLEGALLY clear but I can certainly hear the influence,” he says.

ALABASTER DEPLUME – “WHISKY STORY TIME”

Alabaster DePlume is the first UK artist to sign to the great Chicago jazz label International Anthem, and though he usually utilizes his voice as well, his first release for the label collects instrumental pieces that he has recorded over the past eight years. To Cy & Lee: Instrumentals Vol. 1 comes out February 28 via IA, and the first taste is the crackling “Whisky Story Time.”

LITTLE WINGS – “PARADISE”

Cult singer/songwriter Little Wings is releasing his new album Rosy’s Own on April 10 via Perpetual Doom/Moone Records, and the first single is the lovely “Paradise,” which recently got this acoustic performance video:

Nigerian artist Obongjayar has shared another song off his upcoming EP Which Way Is Forward?, and it’s a real head-trip of a song and impossible to pigeonhole.

TOMBS – “THE DARK RIFT”

Tombs’ Monarchy of Shadows (due 2/28 via Season of Mist) is one of the metal albums we’re anticipating this year, and they’ve just shared another ridiculously good song from it, “The Dark Rift.” Like the lead single/title track, this one finds them pulling off a seamless blend of pulverizing black metal and Swans-like goth.

AZUSA – “MEMORIES OF AN OLD EMOTION”

Azusa — the band of vocalist Eleni Zafiriadou (Sea + Air), bassist Liam Wilson (The Dillinger Escape Plan), guitarist Christer Espevoll (Extol), and drummer David Husvik (Extol) — will release their new album Loop Of Yesterdays on April 10 via Solid State Records, and its first single is the schizophrenic “Memories of an Old Emotion,” which manages to jump back and forth between mathcore and dream pop without going off the rails.

STRANGE RANGER, WILD PINK, OCEANATOR, LEXIE, SHAMIR, MZM, IAN SWEET, JUSTUS PROFFIT & JAY SOM AND MORE – BERNIE SANDERS COMP

Strange Ranger have spearheaded a compilation in support of Bernie Sanders’ presidential campaign, featuring a bunch of fellow indie/DIY bands. “All proceeds will be donated to the campaign. With all the horror in the world, a vote for Bernie is a vote for sanity- for goodness,” they write. One especially interesting inclusion is Wild Pink covering Pogues singer Shane MacGowan’s “Lonesome Highway.” And in case you forgot/didn’t know, Lexie is Frankie Cosmos’ Greta Kline and MZM is Mannequin Pussy singer Marisa Dabice’s solo project.

BANOFFEE – “COUNT ON YOU”

LA-via-Melbourne, Australia producer, singer, and songwriter Banoffee is releasing her debut LP, Look At Us Now Dad, next month via Cascine/Dot Dash. Its second single is the sparkling, bouncy “Count On You,” which was co-produced by SOPHIE, Yves Rothman, and Banoffee herself.

HOLY FUCK – “DELETERS” FT ANGUS ANDREW

Canadian dancerock vets Holy Fuck are just days away from releasing new album Deleter and they’ve just shared the quasi title track which features their old pal Angus Andrew from Liars. It’s a perfect pairing and the band say it grew out of “a party in the woods of rural Quebec. Set up on the forest floor, literally over moss covered tree roots we decided to make up a new hour-long improvised set in front of a crowd of people dancing amongst the trees.” They add, “This is the first time we selected a song from the record to also be a title track – but there really isn’t a reason for it other than we thought it sounded cool, like a modern version of Fugazi’s Repeater or Depeche Mode’s Violator (or even Kiss’ Destroyer, though in name only).”

SQÜRL – “MAGIC HOUR”

As you may know, SQÜRL is the pairing of filmmaker Jim Jarmusch and Carter Logan and the duo will release new album Some Music for Robby Müller on January 31 via Sacred Bones. The album is a tribute to Dutch cinematographer Robby Müller who died in 2018, and new single “Magic Hour” evokes that glowing time around sunrise and sunset. “The light shifts continually, soft and warm, yellow, gold, sometimes pink, and the sky turns to a very particular and deep shade of blue, but only for a few minutes,” says Carter. “Robby always loved filming during these brief ‘magical’ moments while the diffuse light continually evolves and eventually slips away.”
