Atlanta’s Fox Theatre hosted a special benefit event on Friday night (9/13) to support The Fox Theatre Institute, which supports historic theaters around Georgia. Hosted by Drivin N Cryin’s Kevn Kinney, the night featured sets from Drive by Truckers, Drivin N Cryin, Michelle Malone and a surprise set from 3/4ths of R.E.M.: guitarist Peter Buck, drummer Bill Berry and bassist Mike Mills. With no Michael Stipe on hand they had Kinney sing on “Fall on Me” and “The One I Love,” and Mike Mills sang “Texarkana” (as he does on Out of Time). They also had a few very cool, old-school Athens scene special guests. They brought out Pylon’s Vanessa Briscoe Hay to sing on their cover of Pylon’s “Crazy,” Georgia Satellites’ Rick Richards came out for his band’s “Battleship Chains” and Tom Gray of The Brains came out for his band’s “Money Changes Everything” (famously covered by Cyndi Lauper). You can watch video of “Crazy,” “The One I Love” and “Texarkana,” below.

If you are interested-I was asked-What is it really like getting ready for a show and being backstage at Fox? 1) Test shot by Victoria of my outfit. Advised by my bandmate in Pylon Reenactment Society -Damon- to lose the hat because it’s not Halloween. 2) 3) After check in at the Fox, go to dressing room and put belongings there and plug in the phone into charger. 4) Look out the beautiful Arabian inspired window. Marvel at how even the smallest detail is so beautiful. 5) Go downstairs and walk through the portal to the backstage area. 6) Look at all the cool ropes. Don’t touch anything. 7) Check out the night sky from the stage. 8)9) Listen to some top musicians run through a song and wait your turn 10) Talk to the sweetest guy on earth Kevin Kinney. This was my 4th time performing in any capacity at the Fox. Dec 31,1979 Pylon rang in the New Year at The Egyptian Ballroom, with New Blood and the Basics. October 19,1983 Pylon opened for the Talking Heads at the Fox. November 13,1989 Pylon opened for R.E.M. for the LEAF Benefit at the Fox. It’s been a long time and I really appreciated getting to sing a song at the Fox again. Thanks Bill, Mike and Peter. Y’all did an outstanding job!

Photos last night @ the Revival Show hosted by Kevin Kinney of the surpeise segment I took part in backed by Buck, Mills and Berry by Jean Locke, Geoff Melkoniam, Hal Boyd, Jason Bicknell and video shared by Bertis Downs. It was a special night of Georgia music performed by Georgians. I sang “Crazy” written by that was covered by @rem on Dead Letter Office. Most people would never have heard of Pylon except for this cover and also cheerleading by both them and our friends in the B-52s. Thank you to Kelly Hogan for suggesting me to R.E.M. when you couldn’t do the gig. They were making a point of including some women in this show. #pylon #rem #georgiamusic #thefoxtheater
