36 New Songs Out Today

So many artists, so little time. Each week we review a handful of new albums (of all genres), round up even more new music that we’d call “indie,” and talk about what metal is coming out. We post music news, show recaps, track premieres, and more all day. That includes a lot of tour announcements, a list of tonight’s NYC shows, and NY shows that just went on sale. We publish a monthly playlist of some of our favorite tracks. Here’s a daily roundup with a bunch of interesting, newly released songs in one place…

BAXTER DURY – “CARLA’S GOT A BOYFRIEND”

What exactly is going in this jazzy, sleepy, sting-laden new track from Baxter Dury’s forthcoming Night Chancers? “It’s about someone who wants believe that Carla’s got a new boyfriend but it might not be her boyfriend and that someone might not even have gone out with Carla in the first place,” says Baxter. That clears everything up!

MONO & A.A WILLIAMS – “WINTER LIGHT”

Japanese post-rock greats MONO and promising dark dream-folk newcomer A.A. Williams recently released the gorgeous “Exit In Darkness,” and today they’ve shared the second track from their collaborative two-song single, the more atmospheric and minimal “Winter Light.”

MOSES SUMNEY – “POLLY”

Moses Sumney has shared a second single off his anticipated new double album græ. Following the maximalist lead single “Virile,” “Polly” finds Moses exploring a more delicate, stripped-back, acoustic guitar-based sound.

THE VOIDZ – “DID MY BEST” (PROD. BY MAC DEMARCO & KIRIN J CALLINAN)

Putting Julian Casablancas, Mac DeMarco and Kirin J Callinan in a room together sounds like a hell of a party, but this Voidz track, produced by Mac and Kirin, is sweetly chill and rather charming pop. The song, along with “The Eternal Tao 2.0” will be released as a 7″ via Terrible Records in February and make up a 10-minute short film you can watch here:

GRIMES – “4ÆM”

Grimes has shared another taste of her highly-anticipated album Miss_Anthropocene, due out in February, which is the ethereal, drum-and-bass inspired “4ÆM.” It’ll also appear on the soundtrack for the forthcoming video game Cyberpunk 2077 soundtrack, which also includes music from Refused, Run the Jewels, A$AP Rocky, and more.

TYCHO – “STRESS”

Electronic producer Tycho announced the release of an upcoming instrumental LP, set to be a companion to this year’s vocal-heavy Weather. He’s promoting it with “Stress,” which is an instrumental rework of Weather highlight “No Stress,” saying the new song “builds on the foundation of “No Stress” and expands into new spaces, further defining the message of the song.”

KAMAIYAH – “STILL I AM”

Kamaiyah is back with another new single, and as you’d expect from here, it’s got a retro-yet-modern G-Funk bounce and it’s instantly addictive.

GRANDADDY – “RIP COYOTE CONDO #5”

Grandaddy last shared a new song in 2018, “Bison on the Plains,” which was started for their 2017 album Last Place. Now they’ve returned with their first single since, and their first totally new song since the death of bassist Kevin Garcia — the melancholy, nearly-eight-minute “RIP Coyote Condo #5.” Jason Lytle talks a little about the song on Facebook, describing it as “kind of like a big epic,” and saying, “it was really hard to work on, but I think it turned out pretty good.”

THE SHINS – WHEN I GOOSE-STEP EP

The Shins have put a couple early rarities up on digital services for the first time. These three songs were first available as a tour CD-R EP and point to the hazy pop that would excite Zach Braff and Natalie Portman on the million-selling Oh Inverted World. In fact this EP has an early version of life-changing song “New Slang.”

PETER BJORN AND JOHN – “IDIOSYNCRASY”

“I think I wanted to write the ultimate love song. A love song that everybody can relate to. Okay, maybe not everybody but definitely some people.” That’s John Eriksson on Peter Bjorn and John’s new single, which he penned. “When I wrote it, I was listening a lot to blues from the 20s and 30s so this track shaped itself in to some kind of odd, self-aggrandizing blues.” It’s definitely not your typical love song, or even a typical Peter Bjorn and John song but it is on their new album that’s out in March.

MOURN & CHASTITY – SUN (EP STREAM)

Spanish post-punks Mourn and their labelmates, Ontario’s Chastity, toured together in 2018, and they’ve released a new 7″ of recordings from the road, includimg a new version of Mourn’s “Sun” that Chastity appear on, too.

ERLEND OYE & LA COMITIVA – “FOR THE TIME BEING”

While we wait on that new Kings of Convenience album that is supposedly being worked on, here’s a new single from the duo’s Erlend Øye and Italian group La Comitiva. It may scratch that jazzy, acoustic itch.

USHER – “DON’T WASTE MY TIME” (FEAT. ELLA MAI)

Usher is rumored to release his forthcoming ninth album Confessions 2 sometime next year, a sequel to his classic 2004 album Confessions, and he’s just released the old-school R&B jam “Don’t Waste My Time.” The song also has vocals from singer Ella Mai, whose usual affinity for a throwback R&B sound makes her a great fit.

LIL UZI VERT – “FUTSAL SHUFLE 2020”

While Lil Uzi Vert’s fans wait for his upcoming LP Eternal Atake (which was rumored to drop this year), he’s released this bouncy, synth-heavy track, complete with a Narduwar sample, a Tyler the Creator sample, and its own accompanying dance.

JOSÉ JAMES – “TURN ME UP” (ft. ALOE BLACC)

Soul singer José James is releasing his new album No Beginning No End 2 on March 6 via his own Rainbow Blonde Records, and following lead single “I Need Your Love” (featuring the great jazz trumpeter Christian Scott aTunde Adjuah), he has now teamed with fellow crooner Aloe Blacc for second single “Turn Me Up.”

TRAVIS BARKER – “GIMME BRAIN” (ft. LIL WAYNE & RICK ROSS)

blink-182’s Travis Barker has a new imprint of Elektra called DTA Records, and his first single for the new label features his recent tourmate Lil Wayne, and Rick Ross. And though this might bring back bad memories of Lil Wayne’s rap rock days (which Travis contributed to) on paper, the song kinda bangs.

INDIE TAYLOR SWIFT COVERS ALBUM

A bunch of indie/DIY/punk bands have teamed up for a covers album of Taylor Swift’s Red, with all proceeds going to Equal Justice Initiative, an “organization working to end mass incarceration, excessive punishment, and racial inequality.” It features Dan Campbell (The Wonder Years), Chris Farren, Weakened Friends, Wild Pink, Adult Mom, Hit Like A Girl, Future Teens, Telethon, and more.

TRENTEMØLLER – “SILENT NIGHT”

Anders Trentemøller has shared his take on the holiday classic, “Silent Night.” “I have genuinely loved Christmas since I was a little boy,” he writes, “and I always wanted to do my own version of one of the great Christmas songs.
I chose Silent Night as it has such a beautiful melody that, for me, sums up the whole vibe of Christmas. Originally it was a lullaby and since I became a dad, Silent Night made so much sense to me especially as it’s my girlfriend Lisbet Fritze who sings on it. On the cover it’s me with my mom one Christmas night many years ago. I hope you like my take on the song and may I wish you the very merriest of Christmases and the happiest of New Years and thank you so very much for letting me spend this Christmas with you.”

BOHREN & DER CLUB OF GORE – “TIEF GESUNKEN”

Long-running German dark ambient/jazz group (and Mike Patton collaborators) Bohren & der Club of Gore have shared another song off their upcoming album Patchouli Blue, which comes out January 24 via Ipecac (pushed back from January 10). It’s creepy and slow-burning and very cool stuff.

Nathaniel Rateliff is raising money for Sierra Club Foundation’s Military Outdoors Program, Harm Reduction Coalition, and his own non-profit The Marigold Project with The Marigold Singles. Ice-T’s rap/punk/metal band Body Count are releasing their seventh album, Carnivore, on March 6 via Century Media, and the just-released title track is a real bone-crusher that sounds pretty great in the midst of this little rap rock resurgence we’ve been having.

NILUFER YANYA – “SUPER RICH KIDS” (FRANK OCEAN COVER)

Nilüfer Yanya released her debut LP, Miss Universe, this year, and now she’s appeared on Australian radio station Triple J’s “Like a Version” cover series for a jazzy take on Frank Ocean’s “Super Rich Kids,” off his 2012 album Channel Orange.

Death metal legends Carcass will release their first new album in seven years in 2020 via Nuclear Blast (which will be the followup to their killer 2013 comeback album Surgical Steel), and while we wait for more details on that, they’ve uploaded their first new song in six years, “Under the Scalpel Blade,” to streaming services. The track is an outtake from the sessions for their upcoming album, and it originally came out as a Decibel flexi-disc. If this is your first time hearing it, be warned: it is an absolute ripper.

Lodge 49 creator Jim Gavin is a Lilys megafan and not only used a bunch of the band’s ’90s-era songs in the series, he also coerced main man Kurt Heasley to write some new songs for the show. One of those, the soaring and ethereal “Unheard of Curiosities” appears on the official soundtrack and is the first new Lilys music released since the mid-’00s. More, Kurt, more!

EDDY CURRENT SUPPRESSION RING

Melbourne garage punk greats just released their first album in nearly a decade. It’s finest moment is “Like a Comet” featuring its nagging descending main guitar riff that then rips open like Love’s version of “7 and 7 Is” when it’s too late to brace for impact. Like that space snowball crashing into our atmosphere, Eddy Current Suppression Ring are back, right when we need them most.

HANDLE – “PUNCTURED TIME”

Manchester trio Handle make a clattering, woozy racket that sounds like trying to tightrope walk drunk while being pelted with ping-pong balls and rubber bands. Their new album is out on March 6 and this is the first single.
