Free 6LACK

6LACK touring, playing Panorama & 2 other NYC shows (one with Ravyn Lenae)

Atlanta’s 6LACK (pronounced “Black”) is the music moniker of Ricardo Valentine, who released his debut album Free 6LACK late last year on Interscope and LoveRenaissance (which is also home to Raury). 6LACK makes a kind of R&B that’s very in the now; there’s hints of Drake and Frank Ocean, and like those artists, 6LACK is often sad and introverted. “Whether it’s the positive side or the negative side of love, I feel like that’s when I have the most to say and that’s when I can do most of my teaching,” 6LACK told Billboard. In that same interview, he talked a bit about his producers:

Singawd is my in house producer, my go-to guy, my best friend. He produced more than anybody else on the project. And for the songs he didn’t produce, they had to come through me and him at the end of the day. Nova is the guy who made “PRBLMS” and he produced “Free” too. Besides Singawd and Nova, we ran off a lot of vibes in L.A. People would just pop in the studio and play what they had. If I liked anything, I would just invite them into the process.

6LACK begins a short tour in his hometown this month, and it comes to NYC for sold-out shows on January 17 at Rough Trade and January 19 at Mercury Lounge, which both have cool lineups.

The Rough Trade show is one of Pigeons & Planes’ ‘No Ceilings’ shows, and it also features ATL-via-NYC rapper Leaf (who you may know from her “female anthem” with Lil Yachty, “Nada”), Chicago neo-soul singer Ravyn Lenae, and Florida R&B singer Twelv’Len. The Mercury Lounge show is with Chicago rapper Dreezy.

Even if you didn’t get tickets for those NYC shows, there’s still a chance to see 6LACK here. He was just announced today for day 3 (7/30) of the Panorama festival, the same day as Nine Inch Nails, A Tribe Called Quest, Angel Olsen, Cloud Nothings, Preoccupations, and others. Tickets for the fest go on sale Friday (1/13) at 10 AM. All 6LACK dates are listed, with a stream of his album and some videos, below.

Ravyn Lenae

Meanwhile, Ravyn Lenae is also opening on tour for her Chicago neighbor Noname (who plays day 2 of Panorama). That tour includes the NYC show on March 2 at Le Poisson Rouge (tickets). Last year, Ravyn released the very solid Moon Shoes EP. You can stream that, and check out some videos and her list of tour dates, below.
