Mick Jenkins Pieces of a Man

7 New Songs Out Today

So many artists, so little time. Each week we review five new albums (of all genres), round up even more new music that we’d call “indie,” and talk about what metal is coming out. We post music news, show recaps, track premieres, and more all day. That includes a lot of tour announcements, a list of tonight’s NYC shows, and NY shows that just went on sale. We publish a monthly playlist of some of our favorite tracks. Here’s a daily roundup with a bunch of interesting, newly released songs in one place…

MICK JENKINS – “PADDED LOCKS” (ft. GHOSTFACE KILLAH) & “BARCELONA”

Mick Jenkins’ new album Pieces of a Man comes out this Friday, and going by the singles he released from it so far, we’re really looking forward to it. Today he put out two more very promising cuts, the Kaytranada-produced “Padded Locks” (featuring a verse from the legendary Ghostface Killah) and “Barcelona.”

CHYNNA & OKLOU – “XTERNAL LOCUS”

Rising Philly rapper Chynna teamed with French singer/producer Oklou for the new one-off single “Xternal Locus,” which was made for Yours Truly and Adidas’ Songs From Scratch series, which “documents and delivers new songs from scratch as a result of a curated collaboration.” It’s a relaxed, minimal song and more proof that Chynna is worth paying attention to.

HOMEBOY SANDMAN & EDAN – “THE GUT”

Underground rap staples Homeboy Sandman and Edan are releasing their collaborative album Humble Pi this Friday (10/26) via Stones Throw, and they’ve unleashed another track from it, “The Gut.” Over the kind of psychedelic production that Edan made his name off of, he and Sandman offer up dizzying bars that fit perfectly. It’s good stuff.

NICK ZAMMUTO (THE BOOKS) – “TONIGHT WE’LL GO FOR A RIDE”

Nick Zammuto of The Books has scored new film We The Animals which is the feature debut of Jeremiah Zagar (In A Dream) and is based on Justin Torres’ novel of the same name. The ambient electronic score is out February 8 via Temporary Residence but you can get an early taste with the dreamy “Tonight We’ll Go for a Ride.”

POM POKO – “MY BLOOD”

Norwegian quartet Pom Poko will release their debut album, Birthday, on February 22 via Bella Union. “We’ve all done lots of improvised music in the past, and I think that shapes the way we play, even though the tunes are not improvised,” say the band. “We like when new and strange things happen in an old song, and that music can change over time by being played live, because that removes predictability and the ‘recipe’ that some genres of music have.” There doesn’t seem to be any recipe for the hyper, catchy and somewhat bizarre “My Blood” which give a good preview of what’s to come.

BEIRUT – “GALLIPOLI”

“Gallipoli” is the first single/title track off Beirut’s upcoming album, which we wrote more about here.
