9 New Songs Out Today

So many artists, so little time. Each week we review a handful of new albums (of all genres), round up even more new music that we’d call “indie,” and talk about what metal is coming out. We post music news, show recaps, track premieres, and more all day. That includes a lot of tour announcements, a list of tonight’s NYC shows, and NY shows that just went on sale. We publish a monthly playlist of some of our favorite tracks. Here’s a daily roundup with a bunch of interesting, newly released songs in one place…

DAN DEACON – “BECOME A MOUNTAIN”

Dan Deacon has shared a new single and video from his upcoming album Mystic Familiar which is out January 31 via Domino. “Become a Mountain” is a little different for Dan — grand, cinematic and orchestral. “The lyrics in ‘Become A Mountain’ lay out the framework for the album’s overall concept: a Narrator and their Mystic Familiar,” says Dan. “Our Narrator, in the opening verse and choruses, is trying to learn how to be self-compassionate, to live a life in the present while being able to deal with self-doubt and anxiety in a lifetime of great flux and foundational transformations. Meanwhile, our Mystic Familiar, in verse two and the pre-choruses, tries to help guide the transformations of our narrator through mantras coaxing me to be present in the now, even while also being an element of chaos itself.”

HABIBI – “ANGEL EYES”

Brooklyn psych/garage band Habibi will release Anywhere But Here on February 14 and they’ve just given us an early valentine in the form of dreamy new single “Angel Eyes.” The object of their affection is The Good The Bad & The Ugly heavy Lee Van Cleef who is also featured on the single’s cover art.

HUMANIST – SHOCK COLLAR (FEAT. DAVE GAHAN)

Humanist, the rock project from guitarist and frequent Mark Lanegan collaborator Rob Marshall, will release its self-titled debut album on February 21 via Ignitiion. For it, Marshall has enlisted a ton of notable guest vocalists, including Lanegan, Dave Gahan (Depeche Mode), Mark Gardener (Ride), and more. The new single and video is “Shock Collar” which features David Gahan who says, “It was a pleasure to be asked to be a part of Rob’s ‘Humanist’ project. Mark Lanegan asked me, and I liked the idea immediately…It’s a beast! I went for the vocal, with the visual of driving fast on an empty highway…We shot the video over a couple of days in New York, and it all came together.”

ROSIE TUCKER – “BRAND NEW BEAST”

Rosie Tucker released Never Not Never Not Never Not last year, and followed it with another new single, “Ambrosia.” Now they’ve shared more new music: new song “Brand New Beast,” which builds from lo-fi guitar and vocals to urgent shrieks and riffage. “This is a song about feeling so beholden to the desires of another person and so neglectful of one’s own needs that resentment comes to obscure what initially connected both parties in the first place,” Rosie says.

PIGS PIGS PIGS PIGS PIGS PIGS PIGS – “REDUCER”

Newcastle upon Tyne stoner rockers Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs, who have US shows coming up including SXSW, have now announced a new album, Viscerals, and shared its lead single, “Reducer.” It’s a throwback-sounding heavy psych banger, and it comes with a trippy, Orange amp-filled video that matches the song’s early ’70s vibes.

GODTHRYMM – “THE SEA AS MY GRAVE”

Godthrymm (who feature current and former members of My Dying Bride, Anathema, Vallenfyre, and more) have premiered a second track off their anticipated debut album Reflections (due 2/14 via Profound Lore). This one’s more melancholic and less growly than the first single, but a no less appealing dose of gothy doom in its own way.

U.S. GIRLS – “OVERTIME”

It’s the first single from U.S. Girls’ anticipated new album, Heavy Light.

LEE RANALDO & RAUL REFREE – “LIGHT YEARS OUT”

Former Sonic Youth guitarist/vocalist Lee Ranaldo and Spanish musician/producer Raül Refree have shared another song off their upcoming collaborative album Names of North End Women (due 2/21 via Mute). It features both avant-garde spoken word passages and clean-sung melodic passages, and was recorded using both “old cassette tapes and state-of-the-arrt digital machines.” It also comes with a psychedelic video that was shot in both São Paulo and New York City by Anna Bogaciovas and Fred Riedel, that Lee refers to as ““an adventure into the world of ancient analog video processing!”
