9 New Songs Out Today

So many artists, so little time. Each week we review five new albums (of all genres), round up even more new music that we’d call “indie,” and talk about what metal is coming out. We post music news, show recaps, track premieres, and more all day. That includes a lot of tour announcements, a list of tonight’s NYC shows, and NY shows that just went on sale. We publish a monthly playlist of some of our favorite tracks. Here’s a daily roundup with a bunch of interesting, newly released songs in one place…

LINDSTRØM – “BLINDED BY THE LEDS”

Norwegian electronic artist Lindstrøm has a new single titled “Blinded by the LEDs.” Yes, the name is a nod to the Bruce Springsteen song that was a hit for Manfred Mann’s Earth Band, and he cites Kate Bush and Queen as musical inspirations here. The single is actually a commissioned work as part of the upcoming 50th Anniversary celebration of Henie Onstad Kunstsenter, Oslo’s futuristic waterside modern art center, gallery and live venue. “Blinded by the LEDs” is very much in the mode of his effervescent collaborations with Todd Terje, with analog synths that bubble up and others that sound like a star destroyer entering hyperspace. Oh, and you can dance to it.

PIG DESTROYER – “THE TORTURE FIELDS”

Pig Destroyer are gearing up to release their first album with a bassist, Head Cage (due 9/7 via Relapse), and they’ve let loose another taste of it, “The Torture Fields.” Like lead single “Army of Cops,” “The Torture Fields” sees Pig Destroyer heading into slower, metallic hardcore territory without losing any of the intensity of their earlier, grindier stuff. Watch the Frank Huang-directed video:

J COLE – “ALBUM OF THE YEAR” FREESTYLE

J Cole already released a pretty solid album this year, KOD, and today the Nas acolyte returned with a new freestyle over Nas’ “Oochie Wally” called “Album of the Year.” It comes with a Simon David-directed video. Cole’s tour begins this week.

AUTHOR & PUNISHER – “NIHIL STRENGTH”

One-man industrial act Author & Punisher is releasing his new Kurt Ballou-mixed album Beastland on October 5 via Relapse, and the first taste is the absolutely crushing “Nihil Strength,” which fans of Streetcleaner-era Godflesh are probably gonna dig. The song’s also got a video directed by Augie Arredondo. Author & Punisher actually has some European shows with Godflesh coming up, plus the NYC, Chicago, and LA editions of the Cold Waves festival, and an opening slot on Uniform & The Body’s collaborative tour.

MATTHEW DEAR – “BUNNY’S DREAM”

Producer and composer Matthew Dear is back with Bunny, his first album in six years, which will be out October 12 via Ghostly International. “Some bands have retired and come back in the amount of time since my last album,” he notes, though Matthew has stayed busy DJing and with side projects like Audion. He’s shared two Bunny tracks: the ethereal, soaring “Bunny’s Dream” and the loping, chanty “Echo.”

DAVID NANCE GROUP – “POISON”

Omaha’s DIY home-taper cult hero David Nance, who makes everything from fuzzy folk to covering entire Beatles albums, is in full band mode on his new album, Peaced and Slightly Pulverized, and you can check out the ragged glory of the LPs’s lead track, “Poison.”

ART BRUT – “WHAM! BANG! POW! LET’S ROCK OUT!”

Eddie Argo and crew will soon be back with their first album in seven years (“Nine months, three weeks, four days…”) and the spirit that gave us classics like “My Little Brother” and “Emily Kane” is very much present in this first single.

ANNA ST. LOUIS – “UNDERSTAND”

LA-via Kansas City folk singer Anna St. Louis is opening Waxahatchee’s solo tour later this year and also releasing a new album, If Only There Was A River, on October 12 via Woodsist and Kevin Morby’s Woodist imprint Mare. Morby co-produced the album with King Tuff, and Morby also sings backing vocals on lead single “Understand.” It’s a really nice dose of throwback folk rock, and it comes with a video directed by Christopher Good.

CURSIVE – “LIFE SAVINGS”

Cursive released their first single off their first album in six years, and we wrote more about it HERE.
