Adam Green releasing his movie musical 'Aladdin' out this week (listen to the soundtrack), going on tour

Adam Green‘s filmed musical adaptation of Aladdin is out on Friday, April 15 which you may remember includes Macaulay Culkin, Natasha Lyonne, Alia Shawkat, Francesco Clemente, Har Mar Superstar, Devendra Banhart, Bip Ling, Jack Dishel, and Zoe Kravitz amongst its cast. (Plus a lot of other NYC musical friends some may recognize.) Starring Green as Aladdin, the film is set in a modern, if fantastical, city where “the lamp is a 3D printer that prints out an analogue version of the internet, and the planet gets a sex change – it’s not your Uncle Grandma’s Aladdin.”

The film features handmade paper-máche sets, with more than 500 props and 30 rooms constructed out of phone books, newspapers, glue, and house-paint. Somewhere between Sgt. Peppers Lonely Hearts Club Band (the movie), Phantom of the Paradise, and Pee-wee’s Playhouse lies this sex-and-drugs-and-rock-n-roll Aladdin. (if you ever saw the whole “rubbing the lamp” thing seemed like a metaphor for something, well Adam makes that explicitly clear here.) There are also the songs, written and sung by Green, which drive the twisted narrative along in his ’70s singer-songwriter style. The movie will be available on iTunes on Friday, but you can check out the entire soundtrack right now. It premieres in this post and you can listen, and watch the trailer, below.
