Afropunk 2019

Afropunk Brooklyn returns August 24-25 in Commodore Barry Park, and the 2019 lineup includes Jill Scott, FKA twigs, Leon Bridges, Gary Clark Jr, Kamasi Washington, Santigold, Lianne La Havas, GoldLink, Toro y Moi, Nao, Death Grips, Danny Brown, Tierra Whack, IAMDDB, J.I.D, Ravyn Lenae, Kelsey Lu, Masego, Leikeli47, Rico Nasty, Earthgang, Kari Faux, Junglepussy, and more.

Tickets are on sale now, and like every year, there’s a volunteer option to earn a ticket. More details:

In an effort to make sure that everyone who wants to be a part of the AFROPUNK experience can be, the festival is bringing back it’s earned ticket program called AFROPUNK (AP) ARMY. The earned ticket, social justice advocacy program gives fans the opportunity to join AFROPUNK’s volunteer corps for admittance to the festival. AFROPUNK works closely with nonprofit partners to provide volunteer activities and community givebacks in exchange for a festival ticket (a minimum of 8 hours of volunteer work will earn ONE General Admission ticket). The AP ARMY has grown to include a global membership of 35,000 volunteers, logging in nearly 100,000 hours of in-person service/advocacy (that’s the equivalent of 12 years!), and 160,000 social & digital actions, generating more than 25 million impressions in support of over 650 nonprofit organizations and social justice movements across the world. The summer session of the AP ARMY launches May 2019.

Every year, Afropunk has a different theme, and this year’s theme is “WE SEE YOU, a message that brings together AFROPUNK ideology and the people who support it, under the banner of acknowledgement, in resistance to those who strive to oppress.” Here’s the WE SEE YOU manifesto:

There is power in acknowledgment, a recognition and acceptance that begins with seeing.

Not at a glance, but with a meaningful gaze, a focus that carries the strength required to build a shared global future and a brave new world. Our courage is already immortal.

Absorbing the soulfulness of your existence is an act that’s as natural as breathing, yet one too often distorted by perverse colonial visions. Our presence is their terror.

Of course, your beauty, individuality and wonder was never truly hidden. The world has simply chosen to go willfully blind.

Knowledge and experience do not compensate for the need to perceive more clearly, engage more locally, listen more closely.

Seeing is believing. Seeing is understanding. Seeing is supporting.
We, the people, see you.
We see you.

Afropunk also happens in Paris on July 13 & 14, London on July 17-21, Atlanta on October 13 & 14, and Joburg on New Year’s. Paris lineup here, full Brooklyn lineup below, and stay tuned for the other lineups.
