Aimee Mann, Superchunk & Jonathan Coulton @ Prospect Park (pics)
Veteran singer/songwriter Aimee Mann has been touring in continued support of last year’s great Mental Illness, one of the saddest, most somber albums in her very lengthy career. She’s been in the NYC-area for a handful of shows, including two recent NJ stops (we reviewed the Jersey City show), and last night (6/21), she performed in NYC twice. First she played the A2IM Libera Awards at Playstation Theater, and then she crossed the river into Brooklyn to play a free BRIC Celebrate Brooklyn! Festival show in Prospect Park. The Prospect Park show was opened by Aimee’s collaborator and tourmate Jonathan Coulton, and the bill was made even more exciting thanks to a set from indie legends Superchunk. Superchunk brought out their Merge labelmate Katie Crutchfield (Waxahatchee) to sing on “Erasure,” like she did at Bowery Ballroom earlier this year and on the recorded version. Pictures of the Prospect Park show are in the gallery above. Aimee and Superchunk’s setlists are below.
Aimee has one more NYC-area show: the American Roots Music Festival on Saturday (6/23) at Caramoor in Katonah with the great soul-folk singer Valerie June. That’s just a quick train ride out of Grand Central, and tickets are still available.
