Alamo Drafthouse releasing 'Stuck on VHS' book, presenting Found Footage Fest VCR Party tour

As you may remember, Alamo Drafthouse opened the Video Vortex VHS rental center as part of their Raleigh, NC location. Video Vortex is also a screening series that happens at most of their locations, showing direct-to-video films, like Mark and John Polonia’s 1986 shot-on-video horror flick Hallucinations which screens at the Brooklyn location tonight (1/6). With a deep love of VHS and video store culture, Alamo Drafthouse are releasing their first-ever book, Stuck On VHS: A Visual History of Video Store Stickers, which is just like it sounds, loaded with pictures of old tapes affixed with “Be Kind Rewind,” “Horror,” “New Arrival, “Cult,” etc. Here’s more:

Alamo Drafthouse Cinema is spending the first weeks of the new decade celebrating an iconic part of film history: the VHS tape. The company is launching a publishing arm with the new book by video historian Josh Schafer, Stuck On VHS: A Visual History of Video Store Stickers…

“90% of the movies from the silent era are gone forever,” says Tim League, Alamo Drafthouse founder and CEO. “Sadly, we are seeing that tale transpire again with VHS today. A huge wealth of amazingness is disintegrating before our eyes, and this time it isn’t art from 100 years ago, it is from the 1980s. Josh is Alamo Drafthouse Cinema’s VHS Culture Captain, a role not often found in ours or any industry. I’m really proud of his book, a love letter to this fragile era in our recent history, and I’m equally proud of his work to spread the excitement and awesomeness of VHS treasures in general.”

Stuck On VHS: A Visual History of Video Store Stickers, which comes with a booklet of stickers, is out January 20 and to promote the book, Alamo has partnered with VHS connoisseurs the Found Footage Festival for a tour of their VHS Party series. The tour kicks off Austin’s Alamo Drafthouse South Lamar on Wednesday, January 8, and then heads to Downtown LA (February 10), Denver (February 22), Brooklyn (February 27), and San Francisco (April 8).

Found Footage Festival have lots of other dates in addition to their official Stuck on VHS shows, including another Brooklyn VCR Party show at Alamo Brooklyn on January 16. All dates are listed, along with FFF’s “Best of 2019” VCR Party episode, below.
