The LOX at Best Buy Theater in 2011 (more by Brook Bobbins)
Brook Bobbins

Cypress Hill are playing their mostly annual NYC Halloween show this year on October 30 at Best Buy Theater, and they've got La Coka Nostra, Immortal Technique and Vinnie Paz joining them for the occasion. Tickets for that show go on sale today (8/8) at noon. Their only other date that we're currently aware of is Made In America LA.

Other NYC hip hop shows were recently announced too, like the previously discussed ones from Black Milk, Wu-Tang w/ Bone Thugs, Diplomats, Lil Kim & more and the recently-expanded AfroPunk Festival. Here's more...

Two days after the legendary Rakim plays Studio 48 (10/2) with Slick Rick, he plays 'The Bbg Presents The Noge 50th Year Benefit Concert' at NYC's Apollo Theater (10/4) with Big Daddy Kane (tickets). Both Rakim and Big Daddy Kane are also billed for the 'Hip Hop Hall Of Fame Jam: Legends of The Fall' happening at Long Island's NYCB Theatre at Westbury (10/4) the same day as the Apollo show, so it's not entirely clear how (or if) that will work out. Also on the Westbury show is Doug E. Fresh, Slick Rick, Biz Markie and Pep & the Soul Explosion Band (tickets).

Veteran New York trio The LOX (Styles P, Sheek Louch, Jadakiss) are on board for this year's Fool's Gold Day Off on Labor Day, and exactly a month later they'll play NYC again at BB King's on October 1. Tickets for that show are on sale now.

Sooner at BB King's another NYC rapper, Fabolous, takes over the venue on August 23. Tickets for that show are on sale now.

Statik Selektah

Long-running DJ Statik Selektah releases his new album, What Goes Around, on August 19 via Duck Down. It features tons of killer collaborations from Action Bronson, Joey Bada$$, Talib Kweli, Ab-Soul, Sheek Louch, Styles P, Snoop Dogg, Dilated Peoples, Royce Da 5'9, Black Thought, Bun B, POS of De La Soul, Sean Price, Pharoahe Monch, Freddie Gibbs and more. Get a taste of it from three tracks, "Alarm Clock" (ft. Ab-Soul, Jon Connor, Logic), "The Imperial" (ft. Action Bronson, Royce Da 5'9, Black Thought), and "Carry On" (ft. Joey Bada$$, Freddie Gibbs), along with the tracklist, below. Statik Selektah celebrates the new LP with a release show the day before it comes out at SOB's (8/18). Tickets for that show are on sale now.

There's a '90s vs Naughts party happening on the Luxury Infinity Yacht which loads in on August 16 at 10:30 PM on Pier 40 (353 West St) and sets sail at midnight. NYC hip hop vets Smif N Wessun and Buckshot will perform a brief live set, and music will otherwise be provided by DJs including Stretch Armstrong, DJ Moma, Young Guru, Meka, DJ Soul and DJ Tara. Tickets are on sale now and you can also RSVP for VIP. Flyer with more info, below.

Those are just a few hip hop shows coming up in NYC. You can also browse our 'Hip Hop' tab for more. What else?

Wu-Tang Clan have released a new single from oft-delayed A Better Tomorrow. This one is called "Ron O'Neal" and you can listen to it below. The Wu performed the song yesterday (August 6) on The Daily Show with Jon Stewart, which featured an interview where Raekwon and RZA appeared to be on better terms after a recent spat. The interview appears below. Stewart mentioned that A Better Tomorrow will be out in November, but no formal release date has been announced. The record is currently available for preorder with, as Pitchfork pointed out, the ominous note of, "The long awaited 20th anniversary album by Wu-Tang Clan is in the works and almost ready to ship." Pitchfork caught that in March.

Wu-Tang will be playing shows starting mid-August. They'll stop in to Brooklyn on September 20 at the Barclays Center with Bone-Thugs-N-Harmony (more on them in a second), Lil Kim (ditto), The Diplomats (who kinda put out a new single this year with Cam'ron and Juelz Santana appearing on "Dipshits" in March), Currren$y (who just wrapped up a tour as Spitta Andretti), and Dom Kennedy (tickets). All dates are listed below.

Since it made headlines, not much has been said about the Wu's other work, the one-of-a-kind The Wu -- Once Upon a Time in Shaolin. After purposefully letting slip a 51-second snippet to Forbes in May that maybe had Cher on the outro, things have been quiet, beyond RZA saying they received a five million dollar bid. Of course, that presented five million reasons for other groups to take notice. So Bone Thugs-N-Harmony got in on the action, reforming to release literally one last album before hanging it up. Titled E.1999 Legends, the two disc set will consist of one album of pure Bone Thugs, one album of guest spots that, according to Krayzie Bone in an XXL interview, include Mariah Carey, Phil Collins, Wiz Khalifa, Drake, A$AP Mob, and Kendrick Lamar. (Phil Collins, of course, is referred to as the "sixth Bone" by no one.) The album will be "released" in 2015 and, per Krayzie to HipHopDX, there's already a million dollar bid on the table. Bone Thugs are currently on the road, playing select eastern dates. They have two NYC shows lined up, at S.O.B.'s on August 11 (tickets) and the aforementioned September 20 stop at Barclays Center. Maybe there they'll all have a bid measuring contest. (*sad face* - Christ Bearer) The full list of dates appears below.

Speaking of Lil Kim, she recently dropped two diss tracks aimed at Nicki Minaj after the latter released her "Flawless" remix with Beyonce. You can hear Kim's take on "Flawless" below and "Identity Theft" is available through Twitmusic. Minaj released "Anaconda" this week which references Sir Mix-A-Lot's "Baby Got Back." When Mix-A-Lot was interviewed by MTV News, he said of the song's proactive cover, "Wooooh! When I saw the cover, I almost forgot about the song. I looked at that for about an hour." High praise.

Finally, how about something that won't set you back a bajillion bucks? De La Soul will be recording a mixtape with DJ Premier and Pete Rock. De La Soul's Dave told XXL, "The guys have been sending us beats. No real idea of what the theme is gonna be, the theme behind the title, what that's gonna be, if it's gonna be skits, if it's gonna be songs, remakes, whatever it is. Right now we've just been accumulating beats and waiting for Premier to handle some stuff as well. So it's still in its early stages, but we actually plan on recording through the month of September for it, so we're getting on it." Primo and Pete Rock will be battling again at NYC's B.B. King's on September 26. Tickets are available now.

All of the dates along with streams from Wu-Tang and Lil Kim and the Daily Show Wu-Tang interview appear below.

De La Soul

De La Soul are celebrating their 25 years together this year, and Wednesday (7/16), Pos, Dave and Maseo threw a party at NYC's Irving Plaza. There were a few special guests -- Q-Tip came out for their classic track together, "Buddy," with Common as well, and Dres from Black Sheep made an appearance too. Opening the night were Dillon Cooper, and Billy Ray who is on Maseo's label. Pictures from the night are in this post.

As mentioned, Common is playing a free show on Monday (7/21) at The Gramercy Theatre which celebrates his new album Nobody's Smiling. Wristbands are available at the Gramercy starting at 10 AM.

Jack White at Bonnaroo 2014 (photo by Brian Mansfield)
Jack White

Bonnaroo went down over this past weekend with sets from Ice Cube, Kanye West, Sam Smith and so much more.

As always, legacy acts enjoyed a good showing at the festival. Elton John played the entire first side of Goodbye Yellow Brick Road, gave a tribute to the late Casey Kasem, and brought out Ben Folds for a guest spot. Ben had also appeared a day earlier with The Flaming Lips during their set to cover Usher's "Love In This Club" (video below), a set which included Wayne Coyne playfully throwing some shade at Kanye's set from earlier in the festival, asking the crowd "Where's the press?"

Lionel Richie played a set that included everything from his time in the Commodores ("Brick House") to "All Night Long" to his Diana Ross collaboration "Endless Love." More legends graced the Bonnaroo stages when Chaka Khan made a surprise appearance during the Derek Trucks-led SuperJam on Friday and covered Led Zeppelin and Stevie Wonder. Also in that jam were blues legend Taj Mahal, Anthony Hamilton and once again, Ben Folds. Led Zeppelin member John Paul Jones himself appeared at the festival to sit in with bluesman Seasick Steve, which he has done before with Jack White.

Jack White, who we also just caught at Governors Ball, didn't play with John Paul Jones this time, but he did play his own set which included a cover of Zeppelin's "The Lemon Song." It also included calling Rolling Stone a "tabloid," ranting about Johnny Depp and Albert Einstein (watch out Kanye!), and otherwise him rocking out to cuts from his solo albums, Raconteurs, White Stripes, The Dead Weather, and a cover of Dick Dale's "Misirlou." Video and setlist from Jack's set, below.

Damon

Skrillex led a SuperJam too which involved Janelle Monáe, A$AP Ferg, Warpaint, Doors guitarist Robby Krieger, Mystikal, Damian Marley, and Thundercat, among others. The set was closed by none other than Ms. Lauryn Hill, who played "Killing Me Softly" a la Fugees, Bob Marley's "Jamming" (though not with Damian) and more. More old school big guns came out during Damon Albarn's set, which was split between Gorillaz, Blur, The Good the Bad & the Queen and solo material. De La Soul joined him for "Feel Good Inc." and Del The Funkee Homosapien for "Clint Eastwood", Setlist and videos are below, and check out pictures and more from his recent Irving Plaza show.

Elsewhere, Omar Souleyman, who couldn't make it to Northside Festival experienced no travel issues and played a set on Thursday night. James Blake also played and told Billboard while he was there that his new album is halfway done and will include collaborations with Kanye West, Justin Vernon and more. Arctic Monkeys, who were covered twice during the festival (by Sam Smith and MS MR), played their own set too and to a HUGE crowd, heavy on the AM stuff but with a little bit of their other four albums mixed in. What didn't happen, unfortunately, was the set by Broad City's stars that were supposed to perform in the Comedy Theatre but canceled their set.

Of course the huge festival had tons of other highlights too. Did you go? What were yours?

Videos and a few setlists from the fest, below...

Sasquatch Festival 2014 - Day 1
Sasquatch Festival 2014 - Day 1
Sasquatch Festival 2014 - Day 1
Sasquatch Festival 2014 - Day 1

Playing essentially the same set they've begun taking across America, the version with "Hey Ya!" in the middle instead of left for desert, there were no hints of the awkwardness some saw in the hip-hop duo's Coachella performance in April: just urgency. While both men are no doubt happy to collect their headlining cheddar, on Saturday night, their performance was about legacy. They appeared within a cube with black-and-white projections of the American flag, evoking their "Stankonia" cover art, and their banter guided the crowd between songs as the set pivoted from hits to deep cuts, remembering the days they rehearsed rap verses around the kitchen table and crowing over OutKast's eternal coolness before "So Fresh, So Clean." [The Oregonian]
Washington state music festival Sasquatch went down this past weekend (its only weekend) for three days packed with loads of bands. We just posted pictures of Yelle from day 1 (5/23), and we've got way more pictures from the first day in this post, including shots of Outkast, Die Antwoord, Rudimental, Mogwai, Damien Jurado, Phantogram, Foals, Phosphorescent, Chance the Rapper, De La Soul, Eugene Mirman, Rhett Miller (of the Old 97's) and so many more.

White Sea (Morgan Kibby of M83) also played that day and just announced a NYC show.

Dilla

De La Soul recently gave away their entire catalog for free download in celebration of the 25th anniversary of 3 Feet High and Rising, and they'll continue that celebration with more new material, including a mixtape, Smell the D.A.I.S.Y., which will have all beats by the late, great J Dilla. They recently released one of those, "Dilla Plugged In" (which reworks "Plug Tunin'"), which you can listen to below.

De La Soul's Posdnuos @ Bud Light Hotel 1/31/2014
Bud Light Hotel

De La Soul's groundbreaking debut album, 1989's 3 Feet High and Rising, turns 25 this year. To celebrate, the Long Island trio are offerning up their entire catalog as a free download (320kbs MP3s) for 25 hours on the group's website starting today at 11 AM EST. MC Posdnuos told Rolling Stone:

It's about allowing our fans who have been looking and trying to get a hold of our music to have access to it. It's been too long where our fans haven't had access to everything. This is our way of showing them how much we love them.
De La Soul were among the classic hip hop acts who played one of the Bud Light Hotel cruises (1/31) that happened during Super Bowl mania here in NYC. The Roots, Run DMC, Naughty by Nature, Busta Rhymes, Slick Rick & Doug E Fresh, were among the other performers and a belated set of pictures from that are in this post.

Meanwhile, Maseo of De La Soul will be DJing at East Village club Fat Buddha on Monday (2/17) with DJ Mike Loe & Chosun. Doors are at 8PM and it's free.

LL Cool J, Ice Cube, Public Enemy, & De La Soul @ Stubb's - 7/2/2013
Kings of the Mic Tour - 7/2/2013

LL Cool J brought his Kings of the Mic Tour with fellow hip hop vets Ice Cube, Public Enemy, and De La Soul to Austin last week for a packed, sold-out show at Stubb's (7/2). De La Soul kicked things off, and during set, another rap veteran, Dres from Black Sheep, came out to perform Black Sheep's "The Choice Is Yours."

During Public Enemy's set, Chuck D apologized for when their last visit to Austin, SXSW 2013, saw the band forced to perform without Flavor Flav, who missed his flight. Chuck then came out again during LL Cool J's set to perform "Whaddup" together, like they did at the Grammys.

More pictures of the show below...

LL Cool J / Public Enemy at Roseland Ballroom - 6/20/13
LL Cool J
Public Enemy

LL Cool J is touring behind "Authentic," an album that pairs him with rockers, R&B crooners and, on one song, a country singer. It is a testament to his imagination and creative restlessness, but for many fans, it is a bridge too far.

His 45-minute King of the Mic set played as a correction: it was nothing but hard rhyme and sweet talk for the ladies, much of it pulled from the first decade of his career. He came out swinging with "Mama Said Knock You Out," sauntered through "Big Ole Butt," feigned exhaustion during "Going Back to Cali" and closed with a thunderous "Rock the Bells" that showcased the unparalleled percussive fury of early rap.

...

The other acts also returned to the '80s. Public Enemy applied its wall of noise to a furious "Don't Believe the Hype"; Ice Cube, perhaps rap's most vivid storyteller, reanimated "Once Upon a Time in the Projects" and "Gangsta Gangsta." De La Soul bounced through "Buddy," a sly love song from "Three Feet High and Rising," the trio's DayGlo debut. [NJ.com]

LL Cool J (backed by DJ Z-Trip) brought his Kings of the Mic Tour with fellow rap veterans Public Enemy, Ice Cube, and De La Soul through the NYC-area this week for nostalgia-heavy shows at New Jersey Performing Arts Center (where the above review is from) on Tuesday (6/18) and Roseland Ballroom last night (6/20). Pictures (including one of Public Enemy's setlist) of the Roseland show are in this post, but unfortunately none of De La Soul (they weren't allowing photographers, but played in almost complete darkness anyway). Did you catch either of the shows? If so, what did you think, do they still have it?

people waiting to get in Sunday morning (via)
GoogaMooga

They really thought they were going to open today. They even announced that more tickets were being released today and that James Murphy, following in Sharon Jones's footsteps, had cancelled his performance today due to a family emergency. But the rain has won, and the second day of the 2nd GoogaMooga is now officially CANCELLED. The people pictured above waiting to get in today are probably especially upset.

Official reason: "NYC Parks Dept, Prospect Park Alliance & #Googamooga have canceled today's event in the interest of safety & prevention of damage to park."

All Sunday VIP ticket purchases will be refunded in full.

Bands and DJS that were supposed to play today included Delicate Steve, Cults, De La Soul, Kool & the Gang (instead of Sharon Jones), Nancy Whang & Pat Mahoney (instead of James Murphy), and M.A.K.U. Sound System.

Stay tuned for our pictures from Friday and Saturday, coming soon. Meanwhile watch a channel 12 video report that was filmed in the park early Saturday (it claims GoogaMooga will be back "bigger and better in 2014"), and a video of the Flaming Lips playing "You Lust" on Friday (you can hear people screaming "Vaseline, Vaseline!"), below...

De La Soul

Rap legends De La Soul are returning with a new album, You're Welcome, this fall, and they've released a track from it, "Get Away (feat. The Spirit of the Wu)." Regarding the interesting "guest spot," De La's Posdnuos told Rolling Stone:

I've always loved the 'Intro' on Disc Two of Wu-Tang Forever - this erie sample with no beat, that they only talked over. I stumbled on the original sample while crate digging one day, took it straight to the lab and added drums. The feel is definitely gritty, hard and sounds like a Wu record, so out of inspirational respect, we included featuring 'The Spirit of the Wu' in the song title.
You can listen to that song below.

As mentioned, De La Soul are heading out on a tour this year with Brad Paisley collaborator LL Cool J (w/ DJ Z-Trip), Public Enemy, Ice Cube, and Doug E. Fresh. That tour hits the NYC area on June 18 at New Jersey Performing Arts Center and June 20 at Roseland Ballroom. TIckets for those shows are still available. De La also play The Great GoogaMooga which happens from May 17 to 19 at Prospect Park with Father John Misty, Sharon Van Etten, and others. Registration for that festival is closed.

Legendary Long Island hip hop trio De La Soul have a lone upcoming North American live date and it happens upstate in Clifton Park, NY at the Upstate Concert Hall on November 23. The date was rescheduled after initially being booked for tonight (11/9) and all tickets will be honored. (Nas plays that venue tonight instead.) De La Soul's only other upcoming show at the moment is New Zealand festival Coromandel Gold on New Year's Eve.

As mentioned, Prince Paul, who produced the first three De La Soul albums, is DJing at Santos Party House on Saturday (11/10) and Knitting Factory on Sunday (11/11), both of which are with comedian Hannibal Buress. The Knitting Factory show happens after the BrooklynVegan-presented screening of The Comedy, which doors open for at 5 PM.

De La Soul's Plug 1 and Plug 2 created the "fictional" rap group First Serve with DJ duo Chokolate and Khalid, who put out their first album this year via Duck Down. If you've yet to hear it, you can listen to the whole thing below via Spotify.

Speaking of Duck Down, we recently mentioned the upcoming show at Santos Party House on November 13 with Sean Price, Buckshot, 9th Wonder, and Murs. Tickets for that show are on sale now.

Sean Price is working on a new music video and he's looking for people in the NYC area with beards to be in the video this Monday (11/12) at 2 PM. All interested bearded folk can email mailto:todd1@duckdown.com. A couple interesting related videos. Check out Sean as "Seanwuar" (click here if you don't get it) interviewing Pharoahe Monch; and Sean also filmed a news reporter style video of himself on the scene during Hurricane Sandy on October 29, which you can watch below.

FunFunFun Fest 2012 Bingo!

While we've had some teasers in the last few weeks - Wednesday night was the night for BINGO - and the full Fun Fun Fun Fest reveal.

On 7/11 (Happy Slurpee Day!) Fun Fun Fun held their bingo-to-reveal-the-artists event, and while we already knew about Run DMC reuniting and some others, there were quite a few surprises in the massive list of musical acts and comedians announced (Public Image Ltd., Youth of Today, De La Soul, X, Bob Mould, Saul Williams, and Hannibal Burress to name a few).

The headliners (in addition to the aforementioned Run DMC reunion) are an electic-but-looked-forward-to group: Santigold, Refused, and for Comedy David Cross.

Three-day and PIP passes go on sale on Thursday at 10AM CST and will no doubt move fast. Get them here once the clock passes 9:59...

See the full line-up below.
