Bleached / Hunters / Ex Cops @ Bowery Ballroom, 4/23/2013

Bleached have played NYC a bunch in their short career, but last night (4/23) was their first here with a full album under their collective belt. That would be the very catchy Ride Your Heart, which came out via Dead Oceans earlier this month. The Clavin sisters hit most of that platter during their economical Bowery set. They are also brave/confident, allowing scene-stealers Hunters along for the ride. Ex Cops, who've been with Bleached for much of their North American trek, opened the night.

Bleached on the Gorburger Show

Gorburger @ a BrooklynVegan SXSW party (more by Amanda Hatfield)

We were excited to recently meet alien talk show host Gorburger in the flesh (if that's what you call it), when he and the rest of the cast of The Gorburger Show stopped by our BrooklynVegan SXSW 2013 Wednesday day party to pose with and eat a few fans dipped in vegan queso. We're also happy and honored to be debuting the latest episode of the Gorburger show featuring BV-SXSW-2012 vets Bleached who stopped by the Japanese news network that Gorburger invaded for an interview with the host and a performance of their song, "Next Stop," from their recently released album, Ride Your Heart. Watch below!

It's the 16th episode of Gorburger's The Warner Sound YouTube show, which previously featured artists like Tegan & Sara, Dum Dum Girls, and Flaming Lip Wayne Coyne. Wayne's episode can also be watched below.

Bleached are on tour with Hunters and then Ex Cops, and that tour brings them to NYC for a show on April 23 at Bowery Ballroom. Tickets for that show are still available. All dates along with the Gorburger video, below...

As mentioned, Brooklyn duo Shellshag are releasing their new album, Shellshag Forever, on April 16 via Don Giovanni. The band formed in the '90s as the duo of John Driver, whose nickname is Shellhead, and Jennifer Shagawat (aka Shell and Shag, hence Shellshag), who were and still are a couple. Though they've been a band for so long, they've been getting more attention for this new album (appearing on Pitchfork and Stereogum for this first time). And Shellshag Forever is a great record to gain them a larger fan base. The production is a bit bigger and clearer than their past releases, and their songwriting is in top form. Many of the tracks are autobiographical stories about Shell and Shag's band and relationship with lyrics that put you in specific moments like "That old hoodie, it reminds me of the time we walked a mile to play that show out in the sunset."

The album is now available for pre-order at the Don Giovanni webstore, and you can listen to it in its entirety ahead of its release date at the bottom of this post. Also below is a video of Shellshag performing an acoustic version of the album's lead track, "Face to Face," which they recorded for the BrooklynVegan 'Green Room Sessions' in 2011.

As mentioned, Shellshag have a number of shows coming up, including one at Union Pool on Saturday (4/13) with RVIVR, Dogjaw, and Extra Feeler (tickets) and a record release show for Shellshag Forever on April 20 at Maxwell's with Screaming Females, Swearin' Hilly Eye, and Waxahatchee/Swearin' side project Great Thunder (tickets). They've also since announced other local shows, including May 10 at Death by Audio with Black Wine, Swearin', and comedians Dave Hill and Chris Gethard, May 18 at Mercury Lounge, where they'll be an opener, along with Hunters, for the first of two previously announced JEFF the Brotherhood shows (JEFF also plays Merc on 5/19), May 25 at Party Expo with Moira Scara, and June 5 at Death by Audio with Shell's brother's band, Apogee Sound Cloud. All dates are listed below.

Hunters @ Dead Herring's final show (more by Ebru Yildiz)

BV faves Hunters have signed with big indie Mom + Pop, where they're now labelmates with Andrew Bird, Wavves, Polica, Metric and more. The label will release the band's debut album this summer. Congratulations!

Before that, Hunters are going on tour, first with Bleached -- including the NYC stop on April 23 at Bowery Ballroom with Ex Cops as well (tickets) -- and then with JEFF the Brotherhood. No NYC stop for the latter combo, but JEFF do have two shows at Mercury Lounge in May (tickets).

Bleached, Hunters, and Flesh Lights coming to Red 7 on 4/12

As we mentioned over on Brooklynvegan, Bleached are heading out on tour with Hunters. Both bands, who were just here for SXSW, will be stopping by Red 7 on 4/12. Tickets to the Austin show with Flesh Lights are on sale.

Bleached's debut album, Ride Your Heart comes out on Saturday April 2 via Dead Oceans. Hunters just announced that they've signed to Mom + Pop.

Trash Talk/Disclosure/METZ

House of Vans took over The Mohawk for the entirety of SXSW's Music portion, becoming ground zero for shows with Show No Mercy (Pitchfork), True Panther, The Paradigm Agency, Windish, The Onion AV Club, IAMSOUND, Ground Control, and of course the Vans Official showcase. Bruise Cruise at NXNE in 2012 (more by David Andrako)

Panache Booking is returning to Austin for a number of SXSW events, kicking off with a Bruise Cruise on Monday (3/11), followed by an unofficial kickoff party at Tillery Park on Tuesday, an acoustic show at Flatstock Stage on Thursday, their official showcase on Friday at Hotel Vegas across four stages, and for those sticking around on Sunday there's a hangover party at Beerland which runs all day (11:30 AM to 2 AM on Monday) with tons of bands and free bloody marys, and an official closing party with Jonathan Toubin's Soul Clap & Dance Off at Emo's Jr.

Red Bull Sound Select Presents: New York is a new monthly live music showcase that highlights some of the city's most exciting new artists. The event series, curated in partnership with East Village Radio, Afropunk, Brooklyn Bodega, and BrooklynVegan, will feature one headliner and three local artists on the rise. Each month, the showcase will rotate to a different iconic venue in New York and will introduce an exciting new line up of artists.

The first installment of Red Bull Sound Select Presents: New York will be hosted on Tuesday, February 19th at Bowery Electric [327 Bowery] featuring headliner Hunters and [other] local artists: Justin Dean Thomas, Sky Picnic, and Heliotropes. The 21+ show starts at 8PM. Tickets are $3 and can be purchased at the door.

Meanwhile, you can actually catch Heliotropes (who also shared a bill with Hunters on a BrooklynVegan bill once), at the Converse presented free gig going down at Music Hall of Williamsburg tonight (2/15).

Red Bull Sound Select is also doing shows like this, with local partners, in four other cities: Chicago, LA, Nashville and Austin. Austin is also where RBSS will present a series of mid-March events that will feature some of the same local bands playing each city, especially bands that get voted in. Justin Dean Thomas, Sky Picnic, and Heliotropes are all currently competing for free plane tickets from NYC to Austin. More info including how to vote and RSVP, HERE.

Brooklyn's Ex Cops just released a new video for "Separator" which can be found on the band's debut album, True Hallucinations, out now via Other Music Recording Company. Locals may notice that a portion of the video was shot at Williamsburg bar Tender Trap (where that dancer is a weekend fixture). You can check it out below.

The band, who play Kidrockers at Brooklyn Bowl this Sunday (2/10) with Hospitality, are set to head out on a short headlining tour that kicks off in NYC with an early show at Mercury Lounge on February 15 and tickets are still available. Ex Cops have also been picked as openers on Bleached's upcoming tour, including the April 23 stop in Manhattan at Bowery Ballroom that also has Hunters on the bill. Tickets are still available.

SXSW is no doubt a great way to see a lot of bands in a short amount of time and can be a lot of fun. But it can also be a little much for some. If you'd like to see many of the same bands but in a more genteel setting, you might be interested in The Savannah Stopover which happens the weekend before SXSW (March 7 - 9) in at various clubs in Savannah, Georgia. Over 100 bands will play, including Of Montreal, Merchandise, Mac DeMarco, Chelsea Light Moving, Hunters, Braids, Delicate Steve, Turbo Fruits, Ducktails and loads more.

Jennifer and Jessie Clavin, and company will be heading out on a spring North American tour in support of their forthcoming album. That tour features support from Hunters on most dates, including their Chicago show at Subterranean on April 27. Ex Cops are also on the bill, and tickets go on sale this Saturday (2/02) at 10AM CST.

Hunters, The Immaculates, MMotMM @ Dead Herring, 1/26/2012

The South 5th location of Williamsburg DIY space Dead Herring went out in sweaty style on Saturday night (1/26) with sets from Hunters, The Immaculates, Moonmen on the Moon, Man and Necking. It was more of a party than a show, populated by much of the neighborhood's music community and onlookers hanging from nearly every possible spot in the apartment-cum-venue and it was as packed as I've ever seen it. While sad, the wake was very much celebratory.

UPDATE: The Village Voice reports that Dead Herring will reopen in a new location at N. 1st and Wythe. Good news!

As mentioned, Williamsburg DIY space Dead Herring will be shutting it's doors for shows this weekend with a final-night blowout on Saturday (1/26) with Necking, The Immaculates and Moonmen on the Moon, Man -- the later of which will feature "all line-up" of the group who are defunct for all intents and purposes. Just added to the bill, though, are Hunters which makes the evening a little crazier. (And it will probably be crazy, given the circumstances.) $5 at the door and more info is here.

There is a show tonight (1/26) too, the "Dead Herring is Dead Variety Show" featuring Dave Hill and Shaina Feinberg, Corn Mo, Rachel Coleman and more. This show is also five bucks, the variety starts at 8:30 and more info is here.

Vancouver's White Lung have announced that they'll be heading out on a spring North American tour in March. The foursome will play shows with many acts throughout that tour, including Nu Sensae, Merchandise, Iceage, Hunters, and more, the latter of which they'll share a bill with at the Empty Bottle on April 25. Tickets for the Chicago show go on sale this Wednesday (1/6) at noon CST. All dates are listed below.

Chelsea Light Moving at Sled Island 2012 (more by Zach Pollack)

With Sonic Youth's future looking cloudy these days, Thurston Moore has turned some of his attention to his new group, Chelsea Light Moving . The band haven't played very many shows to date, but will make their Texas debut at the 35 Denton Music Festival which takes place March 7 - 10 in Denton, TX.  Four-day wristbands and "fast track" passes are on sale now.

Chelsea Light Moving is one of a few recent additions to Denton 35's 2013 line-up and other just-added artists include Emeralds, Poolside, MC Antwon, White Lung, The Coathangers, Shannon and the Clams, Delicate Steve, Idiot Glee and Fossil Collective. Full list of announced acts is below.

Pissed Jeans @ Knitting Factory - 10/18/12

Between Pissed Jeans, METZ, and King Tuff, half of this year's Sub Pop CMJ showcase was basically a punk show, a pretty awesome move in 2012 for the label that over two decades ago brought us Mudhoney and a pre-major label Nirvana. The lineup was rounded out by the less punk but still great Daughn Gibson (who we also caught at Villain), Poor Moon and Debo Band. It went down on the Thursday (10/18) of CMJ at Knitting Factory, and we stopped by for headliners Pissed Jeans, who you can see pictures of in this post.

METZ, who we missed at that show but saw when they slayed at our Friday day party, are continuing to tour (they play Chicago this weekend) and will be back in NYC for amazingly-not-sold-out shows on November 19 at Mercury Lounge with Hunters and November 20 at Knitting Factory. Tickets for the Mercury Lounge show and the Knitting Factory show are still available. If you missed these guys during CMJ (and even if you didn't), these shows are highly recommended.

Hunters @ BrooklynVegan day party @ Public Assembly (10/20/12)

Brooklyn's own Hunters can be found headlining a local show at Death By Audio tonight (10/26) with Slutever and These Days. Flier at the end of this post. UPDATE: Hunters also open for METZ at Mercury Lounge (tickets).

The Orwells, free tattoos & Kitty Pryde @ Public Assembly - 10/20/2012

The second free 2012 BrooklynVegan not-CMJ party went down on Saturday (10/20) at Public Assembly after our Friday party, which happened at the same venue the day earlier. We already talked about how great Miguel was, and posted pics of Caveman, Ratking and Sinkane, but the day was packed with ten other of our great artists, all of who you can see pictures of in this post.

It was the Saturday morning of CMJ, so if you were there when doors opened at noon, you were probably stumbling in hungover from the night before (unless of course, you had copped yourself some of the Mercy hangover prevention drink at our Friday party). But young Chicago-suburb punks The Orwells did a fine job of waking everyone up, including those who were camped at the door to be first in line for the free tattoos we gave out for six hours straight. As the tatto guns started buzzing, the Orwells were blasting the early but nice-sized crowd with their raunchy garage punk led by frontman Mario Cuomo's unforgiving Iggy Pop-style stage presence. Meanwhile, New Zealand psych pop project Opossum were warming up the rest of the party attendees in the back room.

Energy levels stayed high in the front room as Hunters followed, and the back room were treated to dreamier sounds by LA's Tashaki Miyaki. Then came sets by the funky Sinkane, the great, orchestral Choir of Young Believers, a strong set by indie pop band Eternal Summers, and a more than charming one by Kitty Pryde. Kitty, who spent part of her set in the crowd, was the first of four rappers in the back room, with her set followed by Ratking, Cities Aviv, and Mr. Muthafuckin' eXquire (who went on after watching Miguel from the front row on the other stage) (Miguel returned the favor). And the front room was wrapped up by Hundred Waters, one of this year's buzzed about bands at CMJ, whose set we reviewed from the night earlier, and then Miguel and Caveman.

Attendees at the show were fueled by complimentary drinks courtesy of Sailor Jerry Rum, complimentary beer courtesy of PBR, and snacked on the free Raw Revolution organic live food bars that were scattered around the venue. Hopefully nobody had a hangover thanks to cans of the Mercy that were given out aplenty.

Azealia Banks / Hunters at Wythe Hotel 9/5/2012

At yay high, Azealia Banks is a tiny little thing, about 50% weave and 50% moxie. I didn't really have much expectation for her live show, especially given the setting -- a blingy Fashion Week party thrown by SPIN and fashion website Refinery29 -- but she definitely brought it last night (9/5) Flanked by two black-clad dancers (evoking early '90s club music more than anything hip-hop), Banks worked the floor and oozed charisma for her short but energized set. The crowd even stopped snapping pics on their phones (and in a couple cases, iPads) to dance to "212" which explosively closed her set. I don't know what it's like seeing her in a real venue (I personally missed her Bowery Ballroom performance, one of the very few live shows she's played to date), but in an intimate setting like the hype is understandable.

Azealia is on the cover of the new issue of SPIN which is rumored to be its last print edition. "Thanks to SPIN," Banks said in between songs. "I believe this is your last visible cover and I'm glad to be on it." From Madonna in 1985 to Azealia Banks in 2012. She's performing again tonight (9/6), a free and open-to-the-public show at M.A.C. Soho (506 Broadway) as part of Fashion's Night Out. She's on at 7:30 (but get there early).

Banks wasn't the only performer at this Virgin Mobile-sponsored party, held at swanky boho Wythe Hotel in Williamsburg. Danceable punks Hunters put on another great set, despite most party attendees elbowing their way to the bar unaware a band was playing. As at our 480 Pixels party, platinum-pink-haired singer Isabel Almeida commanded attention, be it belting it out or writhing on the floor tangled in her mic cord.

In related news, Azealia Banks recently confirmed that she worked on a song with Lady Gaga, but is still not sure if it will end up on Gaga's upcoming album, ARTPOP (due out in 2013), which is "not just an album", but also an iPad/iPhone/mobile app (looks like someone's been listening to Bjork). That announcement comes only two weeks after Gaga confirmed she'd be recording a song with her friend Kendrick Lamar for his new album, good kid, m.A.A.d. city, which has been pushed back from its original release date of October 2 to October 22.

Meanwhile, Lady Gaga also has a huge international tour in the works in support of ARTPOP. She's on tour in Europe with The Darkness as we speak, and she'll return to our shores in 2013. While she's here, she'll hit NYC on February 22 at Madison Square Garden and March 6 at Barclays Center (which opens this month with eight shows by venue director Jay-Z). Tickets for those shows are not on sale yet, but check ticketmaster for updates.

Tonight (9/5), Azealia Banks and Hunters are performing at an "invite-only", "entrance subject to capacity" party at the very-hot Wythe Hotel in Williamsburg which is being thrown by SPIN and fashion website Refinery29. The Virgin Mobile-sponsored show serves dual purposes, as Azealia is on the cover of the new print issue of SPIN and it's also a kickoff to Fashion Week here in NYC which, if you live here, you have probably already been hit over the head by media coverage (to which we're adding more). SPIN is going gaga for Fashion Week this year with a dedicated site that will offer video coverage with MNDR as one of their corespondents. The flyer for tonight's show is below.

Azealia will also be performing at a show you have a better shot of getting into, as part of Fashion's Night Out which happens Thursday (9/6) all over the city. (This, as you all know, is the only night of the year Fashion is allowed out in public in NYC.) Azealia and DJ Cosmo will perform at M.A.C. Soho (506 Broadway) at 7:45 PM though you'd do well to show up earlier than that if you want to get in.

Screaming Females/Hunters/Heliotropes 92yTribeca 8/16/2012

Here's another set of pictures from the opening party of "480 Pixels," the BrooklynVegan photo exhibit that's on display at 92YTribeca now through September 6. (Gallery hours are at the bottom of this post.) In addition to pics of Screaming Females, Hunters and Heliotropes from Chris La Putt, who put the whole show together, there are also videos by Jessica Amaya of each band that are well worth checking out. Heliotropes have a new single coming out in September and you can stream that below. The band's next show -- September 2 at Rippers in Rockaway Beach -- now includes Library Is On Fire, Hunktronik, Electric People and NAAM.
