Allen Toussaint

While most of his best-known songs were made famous by other performers, producer, arranger, hitmaker and general New Orleans living legend Allen Toussaint in no small way helped shape not only the sound of that city’s R&B scene but of rock n’ roll and pop music in general. You forget just how many famous songs he had his talented fingers in — “Working in the Coalmine”, “Ride Your Pony,” “Fortune Teller” and “Mother in Law” to name four — until he plays them all, which he did at this solo Sunday brunch show at Joe’s Pub (8/10). Pictures, setlist and video from that set are in this post.

Toussaint will on the road this fall with another famed New Orleans outfit: The Preservation Hall Jazz Band. Titled the “Oh Yeah!” Tour, this will be a combined show, with lots of interaction between the two legends. The tour hits NYC on November 1 at Music Hall of Williamsburg and tickets are on sale now.

All tour dates — including ones in NJ and Purchase, NY — are listed, along with more pics from Toussaint’s show at Joe’s Pub, below…
