Alvvays celebrated Canada Day early, covered The Breeders in Central Park (pics, setlist, video)

Canada Day is not till July 1, but SummerStage in Central Park celebrated early on Wednesday night with an entire bill made up of our neighbors to the north. Toronto’s Alvvays headlined the night and played a set that included songs from both their albums and a cover of The Breeders’ “Divine Hammer.” Before that were Calgary indie rock band The Courtneys who played against a backdrop of ’80s teen film Better Off Dead. Hamilton, Ontario’s Ellis opened the night with a set of fuzzy shoegaze.
