AMADOU ET MARIAM @ SUMMERSTAGE | JULY 16, 2006 (CRED)

I saw Amadou et Mariam play Central Park Summerstage in NYC Sunday afternoon (July 16, 2006). They’re “a musical duo from Mali, composed of the couple Mariam Doumbia (vocals) and Amadou Bagayoko (guitar and vocals)”. Also known as “the blind couple from Mali”, “The duo produces music that mixes traditional Mali sound with rock guitars, Syrian violins, Cuban trumpets, Egyptian ney, Colombian trombones, Indian tablas and Dogon percussion. All these elements put together have been referred to as ‘Afro-blues’.”

It was HOT out and I spent the entire day before watching bands in Coney Island. Factors like that might ruin an outdoor Sunday afternoon concert for me, yet I’m pretty sure it was the most fun I’ve had at a show all year. I’ll probably consider it the best, or close to the best, show of 2006 (when the year is over….for those who like lists). It was the first time in recent history that I remember myself REALLY wishing the band wouldn’t stop playing. I left Central Park drenched in sweat and on a total adrenaline high. Amadou et Mariam please come back soon.
