Amoeba Hollywood being torn down, replaced by 26-story complex

Los Angeles’ Amoeba Music sold their building at 6400 Sunset Blvd (where they’ve been since 2001) back in 2015, and announced in 2018 that they’d be moving. The new location still hasn’t been announced but the L.A. City Council has voted to approve zoning changes allowing for the distinctive building, with its neon turret, to be demolished and replaced by a 26-story mixed-use complex. Amoeba’s Jim Henderson tells The Los Angeles Times that the store’s current location will remain open “for about another year,” with opportunities for extensions. “But I can also tell you that if we find something that’s a fit, then obviously we won’t be taking those extensions and GPI can get on with their business and we can get on with ours,” Henderson added.

Wherever it moves, Amoeba wants the new L.A. location to have a weed dispensary. Stay tuned.
