An Horse discuss what music they've been listening to

Australian indie rock duo An Horse returned from hiatus last year, and they’ve been in the midst of a comeback since. They reissued their debut for its 10th anniversary (and Ben Gibbard, Sara Quin, Kevin Devine, and more talked about their love for it) and then they released the great new album Modern Air. Having recently wrapped up a North American tour with Camp Cope, they were scheduled to return to the US for a short Northeast run beginning this week, but unfortunately the shows were just cancelled.

“Due to circumstances beyond our control, we have to cancel our Northeast US shows that were scheduled for this week. We’re very sorry and hope to make it up to you. Ticket holders will be able to get a refund at point of purchase,” they write. The tour would have included NYC’s Elsewhere Zone One this Friday (7/19).

In more positive news, we asked An Horse about what music they’ve been listening to lately, and they put together a very diverse list that includes Australian dream pop duo Mouth Tooth, septuagenarian trans icon Beverly Glenn Copeland, Japanese ambient musician Yoshio Ojima, indigenous Australian group Waak Waak Djungi, Houston soul veterans Archie Bell & The Drells, ’60s/’90s-era Cambodian rock singer Dara Chom Chan, and a song off the new Karen O & Danger Mouse album. Read their commentary on each pick and listen to all the songs below.

WHAT AN HORSE ARE LISTENING TO

Mouth Tooth – “Memory Foam”

This record came out a few years ago. It’s one of my all time favourite records. I have probably listened to it more than any other in my collection. This video is great too.

Beverly Glenn Copeland – “Ever New”

A friend recently introduced me to Beverly Glenn Copeland. This music is transformative. Just listen.

Yoshio Ojima – “Glass Chattering”

This whole record has been on heavy rotation. Sonically so cool and so mellow. I find myself listening to this on planes a lot.

Waak Wakk Djungi – “Djambuku”

One of my best friends gave me this record for my birthday. I believe it was made in the 90’s but didn’t get any attention until it was re-discovered in Melbourne at the local community radio station, RRR. These are reimagined versions of traditional songs from Northeast Arnhem Land. This record is another life changer.

Archie Bell and the Drells – “Tighten Up”

A friend of mine sent me some music of his to listen to. I sent back some comments and one was “this song needs to tighten up”. He sent me this link back. I will use it forever.

Dara Chom Chan – “Give Me One Kiss”

This is from a compilation of Cambodian music from the ’60s and ’70s. Sonically so cool.

Karen O and Danger Mouse – “Woman”

This whole record is awesome. The drums on this track are amazing.
