Ancient Ocean is the solo project of Brooklyn-based musician J.R. Bohannon, who has played in a few different groups over the last few years (including Torres’ band). As Ancient Ocean, he makes ambient music, but it is not without shape and melody. He’s set to release his second Ancient Ocean LP, Titan’s Island, on September 22 via Beyond Beyond is Beyond. He told us a little bit about the record’s title track:

“Titan’s Island” was a track recorded based upon my three loves of the past couple years: Synthesizers, Pedal Steel Guitar, and Space. The simple arpeggiation at the beginning summoned the mood across the course of the record – simplicity was something I wanted to embrace as a theme, even amongst a bed of many layers that reveal themselves over the course of the LP.

Between the general vibe, pedal steel and album themes, “Titan’s Island” (named after Saturn’s Moon) is in the same relative orbit at Brian Eno’s Apollo, and is really gorgeous stuff. The track makes its premiere in this post and you can stream it below.

You can catch Ancient Ocean on tour this summer and fall with likeminded act Mark McGuire, including a show at Brooklyn’s Park Church Co-Op on July 27 (tickets). Before that, Ancient Ocean will open for Suicide’s Martin Rev at Rough Trade on Friday, July 21 (tickets).

All Ancient Ocean dates are listed, along with Titan’s Island cover art and tracklist, below.
