Andrew Weatherall, pioneering DJ and producer, has died

Andrew Weatherall, the DJ and producer who helped Primal Scream reimagine themselves for their landmark album Screamadelica, has died from a pulmonary embolism. He was 56. The sad news came via his management, who wrote, “We are deeply sorry to announce that Andrew Weatherall, the noted DJ and musician passed away in the early hours of this morning, Monday 17th February 2020, at Whipps Cross Hospital, London. The cause of death was a pulmonary embolism. He was being treated in hospital but unfortunately the blood clot reached his heart. His death was swift and peaceful.”

Weatherall was a central figure in early-’90s acid house/manchester scene, having remixed Primal Scream’s Stonesy single “I’m Losing More Than I Ever Had” into “Loaded,” one of the defining anthems of the era which also entirely changed the direction of the band. He went on to produce much of Primal Scream’s classic 1991 album Screamadelica and did classic remixes for My Bloody Valentine, Happy Mondays, New Order, Saint Etienne and other leading lights of the era. He also co-founded label Boy’s Own and had his own groups Sabres of Paradise and Two Lone Swordsmen. He remained an in-demand producer and remixer, having worked with Australia duo Confidence Man and recently produced Jah Wobble and Mark Stewart’s ant-Brexit single “A Very British Coup.”

Listen to some of his most famous remixes and productions, and read tributes from Primal Scream, Happy Mondays, New Order, Trainspotting author Irvine Welsh, Weatherall’s Boy’s Own partner Terry Farley, Paul Oakenfold, Gilles Peterson, The Charlatans’ Tim Burgess, Chemical Brothers’ Ed Simons, Saint Etienne and more, below.
