Andy Rourke denies taking part in “Classically Smiths” shows
Earlier today, it was reported that Smiths members Andy Rourke and Mike Joyce would be taking part in “Classically Smiths,” a series of live shows with the Manchester Camerata Orchestra featuring orchestral re-imaginations of Smiths songs. A rep for Andy Rourke now told Pitchfork that “Andy Rourke was never officially confirmed to take part in, license or authorize the use of his name for the Classically Smiths concert. The production company [Bad Production Ltd.] had hoped Andy Rourke would be a part of the project, but at no time was it approved by Andy Rourke or his team.”
The press release also included a quote attributed to Andy Rourke, and his rep told Pitchfork, “Any quotes by Andy Rourke regarding this project are 100% fabricated and without approval.”
UPDATE: A press release has gone out with a statement from Andy. It reads:
I am deeply saddened that during the week of the death of my dear friend Dolores O’Riordan, that false statements are made on my behalf. At no time did I give my consent for anyone in connection with this Classically Smiths project to act on my behalf or my name and nothing was ever confirmed, approved or contracted by me or my team.
The press release also adds:
It has been erroneously reported that ANDY ROURKE of The Smiths would be partaking in Classically Smiths which would reunite him with The Smiths drummer Mike Joyce and second guitarist Craig Gannon in an orchestral re-imagining of the iconic band’s music.
At no point in time did Andy Rourke agree to participate or otherwise license or authorize the use of his name, likeness or any personal quotes in any manner in connection with this Classically Smiths project. The parties involved were advised of this on multiple occasions prior to them going to press. A press conference and press release were scheduled and serviced to the media without Andy Rourke’s or his team’s knowledge or approval. Any quotes by Andy Rourke that were attributed in any press materials in regards to the Classically Smiths project were not provided, authorized or otherwise approved by him or his representatives.
