Anna Calvi scored new season of ‘Peaky Blinders,’ announces U.S. shows
Having released the very good Hunter last year, Anna Calvi has since been busy working on her first score, which is for the upcoming fifth season of British period crime drama Peaky Blinders. “There is a duality to the show, a beauty and a brutality, which I have been exploring in my own music and on the Hunter album,” Anna said in a statement. “I want to say thank you to the director Anthony Byrne for believing in me and letting me seek out what I needed to.” The fifth season premiere is being shown tonight in London, and is expected to air on the BBC starting in August. No word on when it will debut in the U.S. where it airs via Netflix. Stay tuned.
Meanwhile, Anna hasn’t toured North America since 2013 — she headlined the BrooklynVegan holiday party that year — and has finally announced a couple shows over here. She’s playing L.A.’s The Echo on December 4 and NYC’s Rough Trade on December 7. (She’s amazing in concert and highly recommended if she’s playing near you.) Tickets for L.A. and NYC go on sale Friday, July 26 at 10 AM and noon local time, respectively.
Anna’s also got UK/EU dates in August and all are listed below.
Anna Calvi is not the first pop artist to work on Peaky Blinders — Orbital’s Paul Hartnoll scored the second season. The series theme song is Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds’ “Red Right Hand” and they’ve had different artists cover it for each season: Arctic Monkeys did it for S2, PJ Harvey did it for S3 and Iggy Pop & Jarvis Cocker did S4. Maybe Anna will cover it for the new season, too?
