Franz Ferdinand @ Roseland Recap
Franz Ferdinand, The Delays, and The Futureheads played Roseland in NYC last night (9 Sept, 2004). After Party at Rothko featuring The Futureheads again, and a DJ set by Franz Ferdinand.
One of the best shows of the year. If you haven't seen Franz Ferdinand yet, you have another chance in October. Definitely do it. Unfortunatley The Futureheads and The Delays won't be with them again. Next time it's The Evaporators and Blanche. hmmm.
I made it to Roseland in time to see The Futureheads go on at 7:30. (It was nice to have three bands on the same bill that I wanted to see.) They were good, but not nearly as good as everyone is saying they were at Rothko. It's got to be a venue thing.

I was more excited to see The Delays. Their album has been in regular rotation, and I missed their show at Mercury Lounge in July. They didn't totally live up to expectations, but again...it's Roseland.

Then Franz played. They played the best show I ever saw at Roseland. The crowd was going wild. People were really moving. I left more than happy...way beyond my expecations.

After about 2 hours of running night errands (I think it was about 12:30), I showed up at Rothko for the after party. I had advanced tickets, but the place was already filled over capacity.
I heard the security say "Some big shot is playing or something and people are gonna be coming in like this all night. The promoter needs to be down here." The promoter was not down there. The security were left to fend for themselves. Franz Ferdinand's guitarist had a hard time getting in, and the manager of the Futureheads just kept screaming, "I need to get in to see my band! I came here to see my band!"

People without tickets who were also not on the list were being told to just leave (not that they were listening). People on list were being told to wait on line with no guarantee of getting in. People with tickets were told to just hang out and that they would think of some way to get us in.
At that point, there was no way I felt like jamming into an overcrowded Rothko, so I just took off. I slightly regret it after hearing all the reviews of the show (see below links), but oh well.
Rothko is being really cool and refunding money for anyone who didn't get in.

Hair Supply

Satanicide members Aleister Cradley, Sloth Vader, Sebastian von Goaten and friends rock Mercury Lounge this Saturday nite in tribute to Air Supply, the most pussy-ass band in the history of recorded music. But don't get the wrong idea, because never before in the annals of rock has such gaiety been transformed into sheer raw power.
And yes, you know those songs ("All Out of Love," "Lost in Love," "Makin' Love Outta Nothin' At All"), even if you think you don't. And you love them, even if you would never admit it and would never be seen in public enjoying it.
Lineup:
Baby Dayliner 11:30pm
Hair Supply 10:30pm
Laika and the Cosmonauts 9:30pm
Pink Steel 8:30pm

Franz Ferdinand Win, Play, DJ

Yesterday, Franz Ferdinand won the coveted Mercury Prize.
Tomorrow night they'll be playing the sold-out Roseland in NYC with The Futureheads, The Delays and The Evaporators. If you don't have a ticket, you can be sure the scalpers will be out in full force.
And following the show at Roseland, members of Franz Ferdinand will be DJing at Rothko where THERE ARE TICKETS STILL AVAILABLE. The Futureheads, Roger Sisters, and Tokyo Nights are there too.
If you can't catch Franz this time around, they'll be back at Roseland on October 3rd.

Who Was Arrested at the RNC?

A lot of people got arrested. Here are some famous (and not so famous) ones.
Emmanuel Goldstein, the editor in chief of 2600: The Hacker Quarterly was arrested.
Mike from Satan's Laundromat went to jail.
BikesAgainstBush creator, and protest bike inventor, Joshua Kinberg, was arrested.
Actress Rosario Dawson and Director Stephen Marshall were arrested.
Yusuke Banno, an ex-Arizona Wildcat, and Phoenix Anarchist, was arrested.
And Yale junior, Thomas Frampton, went to jail.
UPDATE: I just noticed that Cityrag also published a story on RNC arrests yesterday. Check it out.

RightRides for Women & Trans Folks in Brooklyn (& LES/EV)

There have been a few brutal assaults against women in the
williamsburg/greenpoint (brooklyn) area recently. In reaction to this one in particular, party-going residents have banned together to help their community.
One woman, Oraia, started a cheap taxi service for women and "trans folks" needing rides home from bars in Williamsburg and Greenpoint between the hours of 12:00-4:30 am. They can use your help, or maybe you can use theirs.
Here is a message from Oraia, dated Sept. 3rd, in it's entirety:
hello all
here is the RightRides dispatch number: 718-964-7781 and we're doing a
RightRides test run tomorrow (sat. 9/4) evening from 12am-4:30 am. we only have one car so far, so please keep in mind that we'll be there as soon as we can! we're also trying to focus on just the Williamsburg/Greenpoint and LES/EV areas until we get more volunteer drivers with street legal cars. hopefully we'll have volunteers on bikes to help out too. so you know, magnet signs will go on cars and tshirts will be printed soon to distinguish volunteers. this service is for ladies and trans folks should know they can contact us as well to get home safe.
we're also looking for more organizers (or fundraising lawyers who also write grants!) and the next meeting is on thursday 9/9 at the read cafe (bedford bet. N.8+N.9) at 9pm. we've got benefit concerts in the works(to offset legal fees to start a non profit and to pay for volunteer's gasoline) as well as self-defense workshops, and people contacting the local police stations about what is really happening (not just stats) so we can post it here and get that information out to the community and tons more.
be aware and be safe,
Oraia

"Devendra Banhart Readies N. American Tour, New LP," Antony

Devendra will be back at Bowery Ballroom on November 7th. His new album (which has already leaked) comes out later this month.
More tour dates and story at TinyMixTapes.
If you don't already own Rejoicing in the Hands, you should.
-------------------------

Last time Devendra played at Bowery Ballroom, Antony opened for him. I like Antony a lot, especially the song called "Cripple and The Starfish" which was just posted on Pitchfork for legal download.
